  1. Unless you will do missionaries in China, Georgetown may be a better choice. Otherwise, Cambridge is the place to go. I do not think Georgetown has adquate Chinese source in its libarary as Cambridge does. In terms of Chinese history, Georgetown is not even in the second tier in US.
  2. Congratulation! I feel you, from Youtube.
  3. Givine no money from all schools, I will go NYU for its great location. You need a place having more intern positions, and part time jobs.
  4. Why be shy to talk about money. I think that money can be a universal excuse that people can accept easily. More money can do many things that less money can not. Like a debt to pay, and having a sibling to help. Anything! It is a common sence that people made the decision based on the economic situation.
  5. For CUNY issue, I am talking about adjunt positions, not TA. While adjunct postions bring people money, they bring experince as well. Adjunct position means that you are independly responsible for a course. This experince will be a big plus in CV when looking for real jobs. For this reason, I know that a Chinese history adjunct position from city college in 2006 received more than 5 applications from graduate students in Columbia+Princeton.
  6. Personally, I do not think that it is worth 80k for a MA in Stanford. As you mentioned that your aim is phd, you have a chance to apply for PHd admission after you get your MA in GT. You never know what admission you will get when you have MA that time. On the other hand, your MA in stanford with 80k debt will not increase much chances to get a decent Phd admission.
  7. UMN has special housing for graduate students with familly. If you have two kids, you are the first prioty to apply for those aptments. They are cheaper, and better than general UMN student housing.
  8. CUNY GC is not a good place to pursue Phds. I was there in 2004. First, their funding is very limited, only few students are fully funded(I mean tuition+stipend). This means that most Phd students are NY residents. Without funding, I do no think that they have nation wide attactions. Second, the orgnization of CUNY GC is very special. Their faculties do not get paychecks from GC, but from their own affliated independent colleges. I do not know if their faculties have ever had chances to get together. The department of GC totally has no control of their faculties(actually, they are not their faculties). Because all cuny colleges are independent, CUNY GC has no undergraduates. This means that the department can not offer you TA or instructing training, though you can always equally compete some open adjunct positions in CUNY undergraduate colleges with graduate students in Columbia and NYU and sometime Princeton and Rutger. Lastly, CUNY GC is only one building in the center of manhattan. Do not be fooled by its 16th in 1995 NRC History ranking.
  9. Normally, there are very few in the waitinglist. As far as I know, the waitlist is based on the area. Givine that you apply to Asian history, you got your turn if the admitted asian history guys reject the offer. Anyway, it is your right to ask the department how big is the waitinglist and how they rank the waitinglist, and what is your place?
  10. Free laundry is unblievably great. How can students use this free service? As far as I know, CUNY graduate center in NYC has free computer printing and microfilm printing for their PHD students(though they do not have many microfilms). Columbia has 100 pages(can be double side to print 200 pages) per week , and free microfilm printing in some libararies.(they can not free this service in the main libarary, as they are so many outside readers). I guess that NYU should also be generous,as their stipend is higher than Columbia.
  11. has Anyone had any news from Cornell.
  12. anyone has some thoughts about Minnesota- Twin Cities's history department. It was ranked around 22nd by many places. Do those rankings reflect the real strength of the department?
  13. Another week I do not get any news. It kills me ! 4:38pm EST
  14. What is your plan? if you are admitted by all five you applied to.
  15. You are lucky that you have a good advisor. In my case, sumbitting the recommendations on time is great favor I can expect. Can never ever expect them to give me advices on statements. This is in NYC, where people is cold.
  16. If you refuse the offers, those offers will pass to someone on the waitinglist.
  17. You are really tough! Please be nice to reject the schools that you will not go as early as possible.
  18. It seems that people admitted can alwasys get the early news from the department, as professors want to be the first one to let his/her potential students know the great news.
  19. Oh, you are super ! you have already got the offer of UCLA and Yale, and interviewed from Princeton. It seems that you will have hard time to decide where to go. Admire!
  20. Thank you for your post. Are you from Japan?
