  1. cafeaulait, i've already got guaranteed tuition + good stipend (i.e. enough to support myself on) for four years...are you talking about summer research funding? is it more difficult to get as an american in canada? any other issues you've encountered, particularly in terms of TAing...not sure how much I am allowed to work as an international student. anthropologygeek, my choice is between an Ivy and Toronto, which is what is making this so tough...I really don't know in what ways Toronto would affect my future job prospects. Will it be difficult to get hired outside of Canada if I have a Canadian PhD? Or does it not really matter much? Any thoughts?
  2. Hey guys, I have two good and almost identical offers from an American school and from a Canadian school. I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who has better insight into the pros and cons of an American PhD vs. a Canadian PhD. Although I don't necessarily plan to work in Canada, I also don't have precise future plans in the U.S., either. I already know some of the basics, like Canada = only 4 years but no MA degree en route, perhaps some difficulties being an American in Canada navigating research funding, etc. Basically, in the long term, what is the real difference? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  3. Alexander Nagel, particularly because he is really settling in to a very interesting career in art history. Medieval Modern is his latest. Anachronic Renaissance is a revolution. Great for innovative theory, particularly on the connections between ancient, premodern, and modern art, memory, time, etc. Also, his writing style is refreshingly different and makes his ideas all the more fascinating. I read him as much for the content as I do for the structure.
  4. that seems to be the case. I don't know exactly how many people have already committed, but it's definitely not everyone. many are choosing between a few schools, so it's not unrealistic to assume that some spots will open up.
  5. i'm inclined to agree with bourdieu about potential admit into the MA program. i'm one of the Columbia admits for the PhD, and i believe there are only about 11 of us total, with the vast majority in sociocultural. it seems like Columbia sends out letters on an individual basis, at least for acceptances. by that i mean some people have known for a few weeks and others have only recently been accepted. it is possible that they still have one or two spots to fill at the PhD level, but i think that it's unlikely. perhaps, though, there is a chance at an MA acceptance. i hope that helps, and try to stay positive. all of my acceptances literally came on a single day-- and well into the month of March at that--, after i had given up hope on hearing anything. there is still time!
  6. i have to agree with alpheratz and equestrian19, it seems to be getting too late to notify people if they will be interviewing. if there are 40 total spots, that's quite a few interviews to arrange by April 5th (my email also noted that as the date by which final decisions would be given). i don't know exactly what to make of all the mixed signals about notifications, interviews, etc. but my hope is waning.
  7. Thank you so much for sharing kromanic, I really appreciate it. And best of luck to you! April is quite late to let us know, I'll need a little time to figure out how to make it work, as I'm sure many people will. sigh.
  8. Archae-lol-ogist, I'm personally not waiting on Stanford, but I haven't heard of anyone hearing anything from them yet. I'm not saying they haven't given decisions because I don't know for sure, but Stanford has been silent for those in my network. I've been getting a lot of mixed signals about UCLA...does anyone have any clear answers? I think they've done a first round, but my advisors seem to think they're not done with the admissions process yet. I really have no idea what to think.
  9. ah, and this could have something to do with it too...i am actually much more closely aligned with archaeology than art history, and most archaeologists i know can think of nothing worse than sitting inside all day unless they've got some ancient art to look at! while i do love ancient art, i'm much more of a non-traditional archaeologist and thus, perhaps more interested in working in jobs not strictly curatorial at the Met than my colleagues seem to be. to each his own! and i am holding out hope that we all hear something tomorrow once the work week starts up again (and of course, that we all hear something good!)
  10. alpheratz, I certainly meant no offense by calling some departments "weird". I applied for ones I was qualified for and would be thrilled to work in. I just meant that I applied to what I've perceived to be the less traditional internships at the Met...i.e. applied to ones I have the qualifications for and felt fairly confident in doing so because I was under the impression that those depts. didn't traditionally get as many applicants. I'm sorry if that came off wrong in my original post! And I've still got my fingers crossed, too. I have friends who have applied (but aren't on Grad Café) who also haven't heard a peep. (p.s. I'm giving it til Monday before I really start to despair) EDIT: just saw Oh_la_la's post. Again, apparently I am awful at expressing myself on the internet and feel properly chastised and put off. Just too difficult to know how you are coming across online. As I wrote above, my only intention was to note (in response to the question about where we applied) that I applied to departments many consider to be non-traditional. I used "weird" because I thought I was being casual. They are "weird" in terms of the people I am surrounded by in my own limited environment, who find it strange to want to work at the Met in any capacity that is not strictly curatorial. I clearly do not share this sentiment, but thought that that was a majority opinion. The departments I applied to ARE the ones I am interested in, just not ones I expect many others to think of when they think of a Met internship. I am sorry for being wrong about this, and also sorry that I've come across as disingenuous in any way. I think I've been treating these forums as too casual, and will be more transparent and clear in future posts.
  11. Yeah exactly, I want to at least here something, even if it's bad news. I've basically applied for as many paid internships as possible...so that means two 12 month, one 6 month, and two summer. I also pretty consciously avoided the departments I thought would get a lot of applicants and tried to apply to the weirder ones (like editorial, archives, etc. with some of the arts thrown in as a reach). We'll see if that strategy pays off or not.
  12. And after all my certainty that we would hear by today, 5pm has ticked by and still nothing over here...
  13. Christianhol, It's not that I'm looking for professors (there are plenty!), just trying to figure out where the home for archaeology that is not Meso or Historical is here on Grad Café. At the graduate level, archaeologists end up all over the place-- Classics, Anthropology, History, and in the few straight-up Archaeology departments out there like the Joukowsky Institute (Brown) or the Cotsen Institute (UCLA). I've thus far been of that last group, but applied to two anthro. departments for PhDs. Just trying to find some kindred spirits!
  14. Congrats to everyone getting good news! I've been wondering...where are all the Mediterranean/Middle East archaeologists? I've lurked Classics, but those guys all seem to be the Greco-Roman epigraphy-obsessed types. I know this thread is in the Anthro forums, so makes sense to have a lot of hist. arch. and Meso represented, but I feel like there's no where for us Old World people to go if we're not into the language end of things. Anyone? Bueller?
  15. Columbia anthro. met earlier this week and are now actively contacting people...but "unofficially", through POIs. I imagine admits will go out first, with waitlists and rejections following. Probably safe to assume you should hear by the end of next week at the latest. EDIT: this seems like it applies for all sub-fields at Columbia. At least definitely the case for soc/cul and arch.
  16. Toronto PhD decisions went out in mid February, but I can't speak to the MA program. From what I know, the MA deadline is much later than the PhD. If it helps, PhD decisions took about two months from the submission deadline to notification.
  17. Equestrian19, I too am waiting to hear from the Met about paid internships. It seems to me from lurking around on various GradCafé topics that we can expect something by the end of this month. It appears that they tend to send out all interview notices and rejections on the same day and that last year it was March 1st, but that's just my sense of things. I'm assuming by this Friday, we'll have heard something and if not, then during the first week in March. They do have to leave enough time to interview people and get back to everyone by their final decision deadline in early April (I think they notify by April 5th?) Although I don't know if they give everyone notice, rejected or not. It'd be pretty awful to just have sent that application off into a void and never hear anything again. Again, this is just my feeling on things. If anyone has any concrete information or experience, I'd love to hear. (p.s. by all of this I mean, someone PLEASE have more information and PLEASE share it!)
