mystiqueSLP reacted to Pronounce in Student Loans / Loan Forgiveness, etc.
As the parent of a future to be SLP, I've been lurking around this board for future programs for my daughter.  I have to say  $150,000 is way too much debt.  The interest starts accruing the day you take the loan, so add another 15,000 or so before you graduate.   $165,000 is 2.5 - 3 years starting salary.

Your future will be crippled by the debt. That is a mortgage payment and you won't even own a house.  In fact you won't be able to get a mortgage because of your debt to income factor.  You'll be living in crappy apartments or with parents or roommates for a long time.
If your only option this year is too expensive, change your plans; work for a year and save, or apply to cheaper schools next year, or apply to schools where you're likely to get funding, or move to a state with lower tuition and work for a year to establish residency.  Don't let your dream turn into a nightmare.  Apply to affordable programs that you can like and be accepted to.

Assume $110 a month payment per 10k borrowed.  My personal comfort level is 50K total loan amount.  From what I gathered, starting salary should be around 60k a year (medical side, West coast).  Uncle Sam is going to take 25% of that, and depending on whether or not you have state taxes, another 5% or so.  So 60K X .7=42K take home pay.  Even with a budget of 2k a month, you still have a lot of room to make extra payments on the loan.  When the checks start coming in, resist the urge to buy the new car, the nice condo, restaurants, babies, etc.    Continue to live that spartan college existence and you can be debt-free within a few years of graduating.

I've been doing the same. The post is gone now, but I read someone complaining about posts shouldn't be marked as spam and that people didn't know there was a forum

I've also been marking the ones that weren't done correctly (someone put "All" as their institution - not helpful).

I'm going to mark all of the debate posts on the results board as spam.

If people want to discuss the ins and outs of admissions decisions, there are literally dozens of appropriate places for them to do it, and the results board is not one of them.

How friendly are the professors and other students? I've heard that they could be a bit stand-offish/cold.

Funny anecdote that isn't really related: my sister is a freshman in college doing work-study at the university's graduate program for applied and clinical psych. She told me that it was her who was organizing the applications into files and placing them into accepted/rejected/waitlisted piles according to a list. Every applicant had perfect scores and long resumes full of experiences but she told me how one guy was rejected for being "too obsessive" during the interview and the professor noted in his comments, "don't know how I'll teach with him in the class". I teased her about putting an applicant in the wrong pile and she said she made sure she didn't

I know this isn't really related to SLP but I was really surprised to hear that some freshman could be handling our applications in the end.

Thanks. I expected my rejections but it still took my breath away because I was hoping my experiences and letters would outshine my GPA or at least get me a waitlist somewhere.

I feel so embarrassed for coming home from work and just crying over it when some people don't even have one acceptance at all.

That being said, I'm pretty excited for NYU's admitted students luncheon now  Things were just meant for me to not go to TC or SDSU.

If I don't get in anywhere else, I'm going to Marquette, as I don't want to sit around another year, reapply (not to mention beg for letters, oay the fees, etc), and then not get in at all! So I can feel your pain!

just to add another inspiring story similar to this:

my dad struggled a bit through college (and with his mcats) and ended up not getting accepted to med school anywhere in the united states. last minute, he applied to and attended a school in another country on the other side of the world. now, almost 30 years later, he's consistently ranked as one of the best doctors in my state. he says he had unique and important experiences at his med school that he never would've had in the US.

things always end up working out in the end!

So within 15 minutes today I was rejected from UConn and accepted to UVA! It's been a roller coaster of emotions for sure. I'm so excited to be able to officially say I'm going to grad school next year!

I shared this story last year when I was applying but I figured I would share it with y'all too. My father likes to tell this (totally true) story and told me it several times when I was applying to grad school, especially after I was wait listed at one of my top choice grad schools and rejected from another.

My father did not get in to his top choice law school. He was wait listed. He did however, get into a school half way across the country. He never got off the wait list to his top choice school, so went to the school in a different state, 2 thousand miles away. While there, he worked as a dishwasher at a sorority house (making next to no money but getting 2 free meals a day which, let's face it is all a 23 year old guy needs). While there he met my mother and they still (over 30 years later) have a very happy life together. He has considered writing his top choice school a thank you note for "forever changing his life for the better." The point is, you never really know where life will take you. What seems like a roadblock (in this case a wait list or a rejection) may end up being the best thing that has ever happened to you.

That last sentence sounds sad:-(. Just let them know that you got into a great school but the cost might be prohibitive. Hopefully they will understand! Plus, there is still a lot of time to hear from your other schools. Stay confident.

If you could get into NYU, it seems reasonable to expect at least one or two other eventual acceptances. :-)

I really do understand the family front, mine has asked me a few times... sometimes they even remember now. Don't take that to mean they are not supportive, but they don't really know the field all that well or what it involves. Though if I have to hear my Dad tell me that grad school is not very hard to get in to and then tell his story again... I might have to fly down there and... er... well do something.

Take care, and good luck. This waiting is just killing me, I want to find a cryo chamber and pop in for a couple weeks and just wake up to letters.

I think it would be cool if all schools had the same grading system. My university doesn't have A+s, only As.

I don't think it's fair to be irritated by the out-of-field thing (I am one). I think you should be irritated by adcoms not looking at the whole picture like the difficulty of the classes you took.

I was majoring in biology for 1.5 years before changing to double major in Psych and French. All of the intro science classes at my school are known as the "weed-out" classes. They're designed for you to fail and it was exceptionally hard to do well. The best grade on an exam would be a C (with a curve!) and more than half of the organic chem class failed and had to retake it. Some classes would only give As to 5% of the class despite the fact that more than 5% of the class were deserving of As.

My transcript definitely reflects why my GPA is low and I hope these grad programs really read it (especially since I paid $7 for each of those things!) before eliminating anyone with a less than stellar GPA.

I was hoping for some news this week because of the results page as well :/
