  1. Thanks guys, looks like I'll have another publication under my belt before graduation! I'd definitely want people to know I wrote this, that's why I asked.
  2. Hey everyone, I'm planning on writing a white paper for an internship. Is this something that can go under the non-peer reviewed section of my CV? The topic is as relavant to my studies as can be(higher ed). Just thought I'd ask here. I'm not too well versed in writing white papers/professional reports.
  3. Hey guys, Any thoughts on Georgia Tech's MSPP program? I understand many haven't heard of this program, but it's a masters in public policy program that focuses on science and technology. I'm interested in studying tech-based economic development, technology transfer, university-industry partnerships and science and technology policy. http://www.spp.gatech.edu/academics/ms-curriculum
  4. Same here! Any PMs/posts would be great!
  5. Hi guys, I recently changed my major from the sciences to political science. I am aspiring to apply to higher ed masters programs after graduation. Can someone give me general GPA averages or assumed averages for higher ed admin programs? I'm looking at top schools. Everything else is steller, GPA is my only concern. Also, how big of a factor would withdrawn courses play on application? I'm thinking about withdrawing from two courses that I no longer need or want(due to major change). I'm involved in other things that I would like to put my time into. Since these two science courses will not bring me any closer to graduation, I don't see the need in them..but it will drop my course load considerably - I'm already part-time with one drop.
  6. How do grad schools, engineers and employers see a biological engineering degree with a biomedical focus from a top 10 biological(agricultural) engineering school? Simple, broad question.
  7. I don't know... I just spent all of today really soul searching. I considered careers in environmental engineering or biological engineering, but I concluded that it wasn't worth the delayed graduation and all the math. I'm not that good at math..if I wind up physically being unable to do it then I'm screwed. I'll never get through the program and if I do, I won't be able to make a good engineer. I'm analytical and creative, but I'm not a math wizz. I was thinking I could do a 5 year DDS/MS program. That seems to be enough to break into dental faculty. Then depending on life events and interests, I might start climbing the ranks by going back to school, doing more research etc. I'm scared of commitment. I don't know if what I feel is a breath of curiocity or a deep passion. I guess I'll have to figure out out. Keep the opinions coming though. These stories really help.
  8. Omg I have to finish in 4 years. I'm going to deflate my school's graduation rate T_T
  9. Hello everyone, I am a current 2nd year undergraduate biology student. I am pre-dental, but I am now exploring my options. Can anyone familiar with these programs please tell me what the difference is between the two? I have done a fair amount of research, but I haven't come up with too much just yet. What is the job prospects for these two professions? Avg salary and starting salary? An interesting question, what level of math is used in these fields? Is there a lot of field work? How does it compare to traditional engineering? Also, I am transferring from my current school next fall. I could either go to Georgia Tech or University of Georgia(both in-state tuition, plus scholarship) It's risky, because I lose a lot if I go to Tech for environmental engineering. I am a bio major, and I'm quite behind on the maths. I will likely end up delaying graduation by a semester anyways. If I choose to do dental school, then I'll be screwed with a dismal GPA and crappy undergraduate biology program. Tech doesn't have biological engineering and UGA's program is ranked 11th in the nation. On the other hand, UGA's college of engineering is brand new. They just formed in 2012. The biological & agricultural engineering degrees have been offered and accredited for sometime, but I wonder the perception of the program as a whole. I also know that UGA is pretty good for ecology and plant biology...would a new engineering program be a significant hinderance? Furthermore, I have dedicated all my time and resources to the pre-dental biology track(wanted to do DMD/PhD or DMD/MS). I have amazing ECs but they're all pre-health related(I was pre-pharmacy before) Biological engineering has so-so job prospects according to BLS Environmental engineering has decent job prospects according to BLS Most people say BLS is useless. Any advice? http://www.engr.uga.edu/degrees/b-s-in-biological-engineering http://www.engr.uga.edu/degrees/environ_bs Here are my potential programs.
  10. New Grad school rankings coming March 15th. Just a PSA
  11. Can my high school voters please share their story? That's incredible that you knew what you wanted in high school let alone a PhD
  12. Any advice for someone who may have to go an extra summer or semester..
  13. Hey all, I am a current biology undergraduate student. I have a long history that I have posted elsewhere on this forum, but my question is what have most of you majored in during undergrad while wanting to go to grad school in higher education administration, educational psychology etc. I am considering a possible grad school route in education, but I'm not sure if my current major is suited for that route.
  14. Hey guys, I'm a current undergraduate student. I'm trying to find my way in the maze of graduate education. I would really appreciate it if you all could take a minute to answer my questions. I would just like to get a sample of different cold cut opinions from interested and applying grad students. Thanks!
  15. Ok thanks. But you do need a BS for dental school. That's pharmacy school where you don't need a BS. Only the top 5% make it without a BS degree. Same with medical school. You also need biochem, microbio and some schools, A&P. They keep adding more every year..which sucks.
  16. No, I'm pre-dental and I started all these clubs because my research university didn't have any of these basic clubs. Students were without opportunity That's why I started the clubs. I'm going to also start a chapter of Operation Smile to prove to admissions of my motive. I want to teach and go into academia, and I wanted to get into student affairs on the undergrad level. I really care about helping students. I have met senators and legislators in my state about higher ed. I follow what my university system does. I don't know if I will be able to convey that to dental admissions, but I didn't do what I did to be a know-it-all. I did it to help people. I did it for the real reason, not for admissions. Also, I'm not considering a PhD in chemistry. I just want to hear opinions regarding my drop from chem PhDs. Whatever you guys throw at me, it'll be worse than the dental/medical admissions. No, I'm not picking grad school because I'm not competitive for dental school.
  17. Ok, my really long and heartfelt reply somehow wasn't posted. Basically, I am passionate about what I do. If I wasn't I would pick the best ROI major(engineering) at one of the top public schools in my state and live happily ever after. I WANT to do dentistry due to personal problems in oral health. I want to own a practice because I want that patient interaction. I love helping people and teaching, so I would definitely want to do something more than just the typical PTA for my kids. I would want to teach. I see Bernie Machen as one of my examples. He's a pediatric dentist, now president of a flagship research university. I want to help students and remain in academia. I love research and learning about science. I don't get bored when reading about science. I want to work in a lab and all that. However, I also don't want to settle down after 10+ years of education with a 60k salary. I want to be able to provide for myself and live respectably. I see DMD/MS as best of both worlds. Now my problem, I don't know if I'm all that interested in TEACHING dentistry. I would love to work as provost or dean, but I don't know how much I'd enjoy teaching oral biology. I'd love to get into regenerative medicine or genetics or maxillofacial biology, but I don't care so much about microbio(yet, I haven't taken the UD course). I'm interested in ecology and environmental science. I'm the only kid in my intro class who loved the plant chapter in bio 1. That's interesting for me, and I can see myself doing environmental health science or environmental science. I also am so much into student affairs and education that I could see myself getting a PhD in higher ed admin or doctors in education. Gordon Gee did that. I live in a state with a very affordable dental school. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud and hoping someone will be able to relate. Thanks for all the advice guys.
  18. Uhh, can someone elaborate on their votes? Interesting data here. For the 5+ people, can you guys tell me more about your exp?
  19. aryelh, how did you transition in terms of labs? Did you transfer from a smaller school to a bigger school or vice versa? My main concern is not being able to break into the labs as soon as I get there. I'm already a sophomore and i have very little research exp. I need to get in there.
  20. Hey everyone, Here is my first thread: tl;dr version of my first thread: So I have until Tuesday to decide if I'm going to drop organic chemistry II. I'm doing awful in the class. I'm also only taking 14 credit hours(semester system - 16 is my average - 18 is the max). I didn't do too great in o-chem I, I got a B. I'm good at organic chemistry and I enjoy it, I just didn't study. I have attention problems, and i had a lot going on. I am on track to get a B- if I study like no tomorrow and ace everything. I could take it during the summer, continue going to class/doing the work and then make an A+. I am also transferring schools, so it would enable me to get to know my new campus before fall. The downside is I applied to several REU, but now I can't attend even if accepted. I've done so much extracurricularly this year. I've started three student organizations with 500+ collective membership. I have established a new neuroscience honors society. I do tons of volunteering and shadowing(I am pre-DMD/PhD or maybe biology PhD) I just want to get some advice from chemistry people. I know I'm not pursuing a chemistry degree but just give me your perspective. Can you get a chem PhD with an o-chem drop? I'm going to talk to my professor tomorrow, but he isn't very receptive. Thanks
  21. How long did it take everyone to graduate from undergrad?
