  1. YDS ethics MARs did well this year in terms of placement, getting ethics Phd spots at Yale, Princeton, and Notre Dame, among others. I'll echo that Kathryn Tanner would be an excellent resource. She is currently teaching a course on "Christianity and the New Spirit of Capitalism," focussing on finance-based economics and its relationship to Christianity, which seems to currently be her main research interest.

  2. A degree in math from an elite liberal arts school?  Be aware that your math degree holds far more earning potential than any degree in religion or philosophy.  Read philosophy of religion for fun, and get a real job with your math degree.  Read this in 20 years if you go the religion route then you'll say, damn, perique69 was right on the money.

    A little disgruntled, perique69?

  3. To the OP, "chaplain" is a relatively ambiguous term. The requirements for hospital vs. military vs. school (campus ministry) will vary depending on the particular wants or needs of a given institution, particularly its religious affiliation if any. Apart particular requirements re: ordination, a MTS with an intentional focus on or interest in practical theology accompanied by relevant ministry experience will not really put you at a disadvantage. On the other hand, an MTS where you spent all of your credit hours studying Aquinas and Scotus and Eudaimonism and political theology while dedicating your summers to learning German and Latin may actually put you at a disadvantage, at least on the resume/CV level....

  4. I was in last year's master program application cycle and remember how terribly annoying the waiting was. HDS decisions are released in one lump sum, but for BC and YDS they seemed to trickle out ever so slowly, with those admitted early being quite vocal about it (read: stress and utter despair). However, if you aren't the first to hear, fear not, because it doesn't mean you are rejected or receiving no fellowship money.

Last year I heard back from:

Boston College School of Theology and Ministry with 100% tuition on March 5th

Harvard Divinity School MTS in Religion, Politics, and Ethics with 75% tuition on March 13th.

Yale Divinity School MAR Ethics with 100% Tuition on March 15th.

Hopefully this gives you a reason to relax for the next month.

    Peace!

  5. I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks now and I am finally desperate enough to post... I was admitted to BC for an mts with a full tuition fellowship and I am still waiting to hear back from a Yale MAR concentrate in Ethics. I foolishly didn't know how ridiculously competitive the concentrated mar programs are and now i find myself trying hard not to despair during this last week. If I have yet to be accepted, is it likely that a rejection awaits on their final decision day? Seems a lot of yale div acceptances have already gone out...
