Hi everyone I was a contributor to this forum last spring during application season and I ended up accepting my offer for UNC-CH. I went to UVA for my undergrad for communication disorders as well so if anyone has questions about either of those two programs or about the application process in general feel free to message me on FB (facebook.com/ashleymarie007) or by e-mail (ashley_taylor@med.unc.edu) GOOD LUCK!

Congrats Mystique!!!! Well....for anyone who's still waiting/hoping for USF, I did a complete 180 and declined today, so there should be another spot opening in their class. I've now decided to go to UNC-CH. WOW it was hard....hopefully I made the right decision haha. I wished I had known a few weeks sooner so I wouldn't feel so bad about accepting USF only to turn them down. Also I'm sad that I won't get to meet you guys who are going to USF Especially JMarti! lol Good luck to everyone...what a crazy and stressful process!

The cost is comparable to USF- it's about 2 thousand a semester more but in the grand scheme of things that's not too bad... Their requirements are a little weirder- there's no actual letter grades and I have also heard that transferring certification is a little more challenging. Not impossible- just not the easiest. That does make me a little hesitant because eventually I really would like to live in Florida. So my internal thought process is, why not just cut out NC and go straight to FL? that's why I liked USF in the first place haha. And after visiting USF and loving it... My interests are so varied- I can see myself working with a lot of different populations. I got into the SLP field originally through taking ASL classes and learning about hearing loss and Cochlear implants. USF in my opinion is a little stronger in that area. But UNC also has clinical opportunities in that area also and they have a really strong Audiology department to collaborate with. In addition I like that UNC has a focus on Craniofacial disorders....I'm also interested in acute care working with people with TBIs, strokes, burn victims, etc.....I'm just interested in everything! I don't know what I want so that makes it hard.

Oh gosh. I was hoping a deposit would mean that it would be harder for me to change my mind and switch to UNC. I'm just totally lost right now. I did not think my GPA was good enough for UNC so I hadn't really considered it as a real possibility- only a wish!!!! any advice????

no, i havent. also is there a deposit? i haven't been asked to pay anything yet.

Just got accepted to UNC-CH off the waitlist. WOW I am floored. I thought my decision was made already!!!!!! must talk to my mom! (mom if you're reading this, I'll call you after class haha)

yup, totally agree. I mean that was one girl who decided not to stay with the program, out of 60. and it maybe just wasn't a good fit for her, you just never know. Maybe she wasn't willing to take the initiative to ask for assistance? maybe she was having family issues? maybe a hundred other things that won't apply to you. There's not really a point to stress out too much about it. I really enjoyed the open house today, for what it's worth

I feel like we should just be happy with where we are now, and take things as they come. You can only be so prepared- you just gotta jump in and do it right!? I'm super stoked about the future...it'll be hard but totally worth it

Well I've heard that JMU's program is really stressful too...I think most programs are stressful. I think that UVA's program is just a lot more chill so anything will feel a little stressful to me. I was talking to 2 girls and they said they had a friend who dropped the USF program this year because she felt like the clinical supervisors were not supportive and they didn't guide her very much. They put you through a "boot camp" for about 3 weeks and then you're in the clinic with clients by mid september. Dr. Bahr actually addressed this point though- she said that you just have to work hard and adapt. No one is going to hold your hand in a real job, so you've just got to be self-reliant. So yeah. maybe a little stressful. But I really think by attending the USF program I will be prepared to be an SLP, and all the professors I talked to were so approachable. So I think it'll be fun

YES! haha see you there I just went to the open house today and it seems like a stressful program to be honest. The girls I was talking to at my table said their friend dropped out this year because it's very much sink or swim. But I'm still excited after touring the clinic and hearing about everything they offered, I'm still totally on board!

(side note- I feel like my undergrad degree in SLP is totally useless if I still have to take a leveling course. Seriously what even was the point? UVA literally doesn't offer that class.) I'm doing mine with Eastern New Mexico University...which I know is random but the administration has been super helpful and they're the cheapest one I could find. The application is free (it's more like you just put your name on the application for CDIS Leveler, send them your transcript, and you're in). All of the summer courses are billed with in-state tuition, so according to my calculation from what they have online, the total cost of a 3 credit course is around $550. but it's better than other ones I found that cost more like $1500. Longwood University also has a program- according to their website registration for the Neuroanatomy course begins April 8 (and you have to apply a little bit before so you have a student account set up), although elsewhere I saw that their course registration was open March 30...and it says that 3 of 10 people are already signed up. So that made me sort of confused but Longwood's program is a little more expensive anyway so I really didn't look into it. JMarti, did the neuro course you're in now not fulfill USF's requirements? Because I feel like every acceptance e-mail that USF sent out must have had that warning in it- They must just get a lot of kids (like me!) who haven't taken it yet so they put a blanket statement out there to everyone.

For everyone who is wondering about hearing from UVA, this is what my adviser sent me when I asked him where I stood, because some people have gotten acceptances but I've (and a lot of you've) heard nothing. "You are in the undecided group. There is a small group that has been accepted. The committee is now waiting to make decisions for the next group, and I think that will still take a while.I am not sure how many more acceptances will go out, but I honestly think it will be a limited number." I know that's limited information, but for anyone stressing, don't think that you've been rejected yet! you never really know I guess haha
-
yeah ive decided to go to USF. i haven't sent my official acceptance in yet because i cant enroll in my online neuroanatomy course until March 31st so i want to make sure i'm officially enrolled in that, and have all my t's crossed and my i's dotted. I don't want to officially accept in case something goes wrong with the neuroanatomy course signups. There shouldn't be any problem, but I'm kind of a worrier haha

Yeah you should e-mail them the title of the class and an official description. and if you have a syllabus it can't hurt to send it their way, just to be safe.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god me and my mom have been rooting for you so hard! super congrats :)
