  1. So there is a 5 year old JRT mix that is reportedly very calm and does well alone in the house. I asked the shelter and I can foster him before making a decision, so I think I'll go with that...
  2. I'm so glad this topic is here. I'm a graduate student, in my third year. My coursework is all but done but this doesn't mean I have more free time due to lab work. I do get home by 5-6 everyday though. I've been thinking to get a dog for months now, but there are SO MANY things to consider. It's frustrating. I found a nice chihuahua mix of 2 years from a rescue group that is reportedly calm and mainly interested in sitting in your lap and has no separation anxiety. But staying by himself in the house the whole day? What's the point in getting a dog if it's gonna be miserable? Then there's the budget. Grad students, especially international ones like your truly, even fully funded have a tight budget and lack the comfort of family nearby to help out. I think I'll go with fostering one for now. Even if it's abit more work than adoption, it has the no long-term commitment advantage and i will be able to see if I can manage to have a dog in my life. OT: As part of my lab work I spend A LOT of time with rats and minipigs. Last year I had three minipigs that were like my pets and I hated to put them down when the time came. But rats are awesome as well. I'm in the animal enrichment committee and I get to play with them and try different ways to entertain them.
  3. Um... crap. Crap crap crap. Can you please elaborate? I awas offered PhD in that school too, and accepted it. Didn't see anything weird though. 19.099$ plus full tuition waiver, pretty much what I expected...
  4. Damn I wish I had discovered this board earlier... The waiting was killing me too! Although it was 99% sure I would get in, since I was informally accepted by a professor there, I kept checking my email like 20 times an hour or so The answer came in March 27...

Well to be fair, its the single appartments with private bath 1000/month The rest are somewhat cheaper, but i'm not interested in sharing a bathroom. I really need to go to an empty home everyday and relax. I've read online that Willimantic isn't a nice place to stay due to crime and homeless situation. Also Mansfield and Storrs are OK but isolated and relatively more expensive than the surrounding places. I see in this thread that Vernon is the most selected place for a grad and I can see why. It is an OK community, close to Manchester and Hartford, close to UConn of course also, and daily bus route to NYC. But I wouldn't mind living outside a town, but still pretty close to it...

Yeah actually I'm not interested in sharing, and single appartments on campus cost abt 1000$/mo. So there's no point there. I read here that Vernon and Manchester are popular for grad students though...

Hello everybody, I've been admitted to Uconn, Storrs and I'm trying to figure out the best place to rent... I strongly feel Vernon is the best solution, but does anyone know if there's transportation to and from campus? I couldn't find anything online. I plan to get a car as soon as I can anyway, but still this won't happen vesy soon... thanks!
