2013 SLP Admissions Thread!

Maybe, but Colorado is largely comprised of transplants to begin with or that's how I have seen it (and I'm one as well, so not knocking it.) One of the things that has been noted is that CU is so competitive is because it's a wonderful place to live that participates in the Western Exchange Program - a top 25 school where a large number of people can get in-state tuition is certainly going to be a draw for applicants! -

I did do my HDFS work at CSU. I Loved the program and staff! I took it to get in the field and prep for a social work background however, I'm not really convinced it's phenomenally useful as a stand-alone degree. I think having as much "varied" experience may actually hurt me as it looks as though I'm flighty. I tried to explain my track and passion in the SOPs, but if I were giving my own app a quick look, I might draw the conclusion that this guy hasn't made up his mind what he want to be when he grows up. Wyoming sent an email saying that we should hear back by the end of next week. I'm a little hopeful there as one of my better LORs is from a faculty member. -

Unfortunately... not too many. I have 3 BSs: Chemistry... 12 years ago when I was er... not as focused and much cockier, Human Dev and Family Studies, (3.93 GPA) and Comm Disorders (finishing now, but 3.87 GPA). I'm pretty much out of things I can really take. I might be able to slide in a grad course here or there (I have 15 hours of grad-level classes) but really there is not a ton to bring the overall out of the gutter. The only thing I can really do to boost my apps are re-take the GREs I really didn't study much and kinda forgot how to do math, get in more SLP-specific volunteer/work experience, and retune my SOP and CV I think. CU is my absolute first choice because I want to be on a research track. However, I would actually be really fine with Wyoming as they have a social work program which ties into my intended focus. -

Me too, Given I was waitlisted at UNColorado I'm fully expecting a rejection because I think it indicates my app is not all that strong. But it would be very nice to just know. -

Congrats on the wait list, and the UNC acceptation!!! I haven't got anything from CU so pretty much assuming a rejection, but was assuming that before so no change, just data to back it up. I'm not sure about the in-state issue hurting chances, in fact I always assume that schools "reserve" a few slots for in-state students which helps your chances. -

Do you know if this mean that every single person who was not accepted is wait listed, or did they just take the next x % of people? Thanks for the info! -

Ug... first wait list response from Northern Colorado via a form letter which requested a reply by April 12th if you wish to remain on the list. Not a good sign for other applications. I don't know if the list is ranked, but I did ask in my reply. Good luck to others out there, and congrats to those who got in! - Chris -

I don't think it's really unethical unless you are intentionally trying to hurt other students/potential students etc. It is simply a built-in flaw in the system an you can't pass up a sure thing for a wait list. -
What do you do when everyone rejects you?

Oi! I just turned 32 and only figured out what I want to be when I grow up a couple of years ago. -
Applications for Fall 2013!

If anyone here is applying to Colorado State, I just heard that they should have wrapped up decisions for non-advanced standing students by the end of this week and letters out by the end of next week. Good luck to all! -Chris -

I could not agree more with this! Pretty much any program, at any level, is what you make of it. You can do the bare minimum for certification in a top tier program and get less out of it than going above and beyond in a "lesser" program. Having worked in chem and biochem labs as an undergrad hrmityhmmm years ago... I always loved the smaller groups. It seemed like there was so much more room for exploration and gaining experience. I kind of felt sorry for the undergrads that went with the big names and spent all their time washing glassware. Totally different field I know, but I can't help but think that the takeaway isn't at least somewhat the same. Take care! -Chris -

I feel your pain, Northern Colorado notified last Friday for 3 years... this year... the year I apply... nothing. It is possible that I am going nuts, maybe this is how conspiracy theorists get their start? Here is wising good vibes -

I totally get that! I've been pretty much letting the "rest of life" slide these past two years working, getting a second BS in Comm Disorders, experience, and applying for grad schools... I think that makes this time so much more unbearable. I don't think I ever really considered the fact that I might not get in anywhere until these past couple of weeks. Hang in there, I keep trying to tell myself even knowing bad news is better than no news, but I wonder how much I believe it. -

I could not agree more on the balloon part... maybe they should show up at your door Publisher's Clearing House style with a comically large acceptance letter? -

I really do understand the family front, mine has asked me a few times... sometimes they even remember now. Don't take that to mean they are not supportive, but they don't really know the field all that well or what it involves. Though if I have to hear my Dad tell me that grad school is not very hard to get in to and then tell his story again... I might have to fly down there and... er... well do something. Take care, and good luck. This waiting is just killing me, I want to find a cryo chamber and pop in for a couple weeks and just wake up to letters. -

I live in Boulder and have been to the campus a number of times, and drive by it all the time. It's a beautiful place. Having started out more in the east (U of Pitt) I have sort of developed an odd schema of colleges as these very intimidating places with 200 year old buildings and long wooden benches next to stone fireplaces that practically ooze generations of study and angst. UC Boulder is just fundamentally different and feels like more of a community. Of course, it's known as a big party school, but it's big enough where you can find something for everyone. -

yup... I really wish they would move it up a week! Even though CU is such a long shot for me, it's still far and away my top choice so it's nerve wracking. At least it's nice to have an approximate timeline. -

Ah, that makes a little more sense (the spring break bit.) I got the same email from Wyoming... kind of a complete psych-out... It's somewhat interesting that we pretty much applied to the exact same set of schools. I almost went for Idaho, but had to draw the line at 6 programs... at some point I ran up against the question of how many times I could ask people I respect to write novel and nice things about me -here's to the waiting! -

It's both, he changes it at the end-ish of the last book. I've read the Pullman series, loved the fist two books, but I thought the third was kind of a dud I was really hoping to hear back from Northern Colorado today... kinda bummed not to get anything so... time to predend to do something productive -

Hi, I have to admit that I can see how your remarks could have been seen as biased, but as an out-of-feilder who only recently fell in love with the field I certainly took no offense! Although there might be some disappointment, as someone who wants to see the field grow with dedicated people (who can also promote language to other disciplines) I would rather see my slot go to someone with a good fit and a long-developed experience than to my mere hopes of making a difference. For some of reason I am reminded of Dumbledore - "help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who... deserve it" In other words, there will be a place for all who genuinely want to be here. It may not be prestigious, or come on the first try, but I do trust in the process. It could also be that I've been re-reading Harry Potter to stave off the nerves... Take care! -Chris
