  1. There's only one Harvard acceptance up, did they actually send out notices yet? Or was that an informal notice. I know my POI is a no prior contact, you probably won't hear from me until we meet in person type of guy.

  2. Thanks! I hope the Dean's office signature or whatever is just a formality.

Too excited to think of anything right now but shall PM you soon. Thanks for offering.

    Where are you applying to?

No problem. Princeton rejection was the first thing I heard back, waiting on Harvard, Penn, Toronto, and Georgetown at this point.

  3. I got into UNC!!!

Nominated for admission...only thing might be that I am an international student so there is a tiny chance of there being an issue but he doubts it!

    So excited

Congrats! It's a great school. I did my MA there, pm me if you have any questions.

  4. Just to add to this - FLAS scholarships that are available are tied in some way to the designation of a school's regional studies centers as NRCs (National Resource Centers). For example, Cornell is currently an NRC for South and Southeast Asia. It lost NRC designation for Europe (and, I think, East Asia) this cycle. Since either FLAS or Cornell considered some Middle Eastern languages within the "Europe" category, you can no longer get a FLAS grant at Cornell (at least until the next grant cycle begins, in 2018) for Arabic or Turkish, even though those are theoretically eligible "critical languages". tl;dr, it's very important to know which languages a school offers, specifically.

Also, funding cycles are every four years, and the languages funded by a given school can change at the end of that period. Annoyingly, if you apply the year a cycle shifts, and the school does not receive funding for your language, you may be accepted by the school but wind up with no funding because their expected successful application was denied by the federal government.

One more thing - on top of language classes, FLAS also requires you to do a certain amount of coursework related to the culture of the region/language you're studying. There seems to be quite a bit of flexibility to negotiate this with the school disbursing FLAS funding to you, though.

Correct and useful information. I think the only school that got everything they asked for last cycle was Chicago.

  5. Finally, heard back somewhere. Rejection from Princeton. Hardly surprising. Honestly, more of a relief than anything to finally hear something definitive back. Well five more chances. I just want an opportunity to earn a PhD in history at a high quality institution. So I'll be just as happy going 1/5 the rest of way as going 5/5.

Patience and good luck to all, my friends.

  6. Does anyone know if NYU PhD students earn an MA along the way?  I can't find anything online, it only says for students who don't pass the quals.

If you can "masters out" I'm pretty sure that means you earn a MA along the way although I'm not 100% true.

  7. Sigh. Checking in on a break from the job hunt, a parallel world of silence...

I was expecting to be gutted about Northwestern, but in a weird way, it's not a terrible thing being rejected from a school. The most annoying thing about looking for work is the number of doors slamming because of citizenship. At least with applications, we can polish our writing samples, take a new angle on the SOP, find a crucial detail to strengthen our research proposals over the summer... In so many ways it's out of our control, but there are a lot of opportunities for resilience, too.

What's everyone else up to today?

Trying to focus on work. At least you've heard from somewhere. It really is frustrating when so many things are out of our control. At some schools if there is a major gender imbalance in some subfields they won't consider applicants of certain genders some years.

  8. Who can say?  Things have not been lining up like they have in previous years, unfortunately.

    Truth.

Question for Harvard applicants? Does your application say anything like under review or something like that? I logged on to the portal where I submitted my application and all it says is submitted.

  9. как жаль. Not my best fit program but was hoping for some good news at some point. Что делать...только ждать...

You and I both. Haven't heard from a single school yet! Had an interview yesterday w/ Penn but I have no idea what their time table is. Oh well. Where else did you apply?

    Желаю вас удачи и терпения.

  10. Particularly suspicious since Harvard usually sends rejections by post.

If I had to guess I'd say someone probably emailed and was informally told they were rejected. Personally, I'm not going to start worrying until I see acceptances being posted.

  11. Any news on the Illinois admits? My POI and online portal are still silent. I am worried because my POI at Berkeley reached out and told me she was not able to get anyone in this year, though my webpage for Berkeley is still at the 'submitted' stage.

Although I did not apply there, my friend did, and they have informed their Russianist admits. However, it's a state school so there will likely be a second round of admits and wait list choices, etc. Also, although my friend got in, he isn't 100% going there which means a possible spot opening up.

Трудно ждать, трудно ждать, все рано нам приходится ждать. Ждем ждем ждем

  12. Yes, yes rub it in when I literally can't even get out of my driveway :P

Actually I don't much mind because it gives me an excuse to be a hermit. My dog, on the other hand, is not happy about the situation. (That is, there being snow higher than her- she's enjoying her mommy being home for the day!)

I'm from NY, so to be honest something just feels wrong about it. Also we had three inches here last year (grand total) and UNC shut down for a week. I can only imagine what would happen if people couldn't get out of their driveways.

  13. Ok. Let the guessing games begin:  Which schools will send out their correspondence this week?  My bet is on Minnesota,GW, maybe Kansas.  Just looking at past entries and working only from my own list.  Anyone else care to venture some wild speculation?

Hoping beyond hope that Harvard will. But at this point betting my wait to hear back from my first school extends into next week. Hoping that some hints will be dropped as to when Penn will send out decisions during my interview on Wednesday.
