  1. Wow! $1000/ month!

Does anyone know a general price for off campus housing in a safe part of town?

From what I understand, it's typically ~$700 for a single room in a home with a few housemates, in a reasonable part of town. Of course, it varies. I've been told to avoid the boardwalk area and stick to the west side if I go.

  2. Bumping this one up.

Has anyone lived in the graduate dorms on campus or know what they are like?

The city seems really cool and I'd be happy to be a future banana slug. :)

Hey! I may also someday be a banana slug. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the grad dorms on campus, though. -_-

When I went for an interview, most of the students suggested finding a place on the "west side" if possible. The city definitely seems like a cool place, though. If only more SC grad students were on this forum!

  3. Ouch. I suspected as much. Guess I will plan on spending this year figuring out what I need to do differently. I am a "non-traditional" student - 43 years old with 20 years in industry - so it is not as straightforward for me. I also started late in the year as things didn't align for me to look like I could think about applying until October or so. I guess we'll see, but that is not good news.

Maybe so, maybe not! Quite a few of the graduate student TAs I had were older, and I always got the vibe that many of the professors preferred students with what they called "life experience". When I was finishing applications, my advising prof asked if I was sure I was ready - she usually doesn't accept students who have been out of college less than a few years. So there is hope!!

  4. I emailed Schmitt, Holbrook, and Gaines. Never got a response back from any of them - as a matter of fact, the only response I got from any professor was one at Stanford - is that low response rate typical??

Schmitt and Holbrook do a lot of teaching and work in the tropics (so jealous of their research intern people), so maybe that's why they didn't get back to you?

For my field at least, I've heard that it's really important to get a response before applying and to build a rapport. I'm not sure if it's the same for marine, but I imagine it's similar. :/

  5. I'm EEB - plant community ecology! Though I'm also hoping to study biodiversity across tropic levels (bugs). I applied to just three programs (see my signature).

I've heard back from UCSC (already went for an interview - it's the most amazing campus!!!) and UCSD (interviewing next month). Waiting for Stanford with only the tiniest sliver of hope.

Astond, who are you applying with at ucsb? My undergrad degree is aquatic bio from there.

  6. No one has been picking up in my home program for the past few days... So I called the main biosci office and asked if all home programs were done. And she told me that as of  today they were done sending things for ALL programs... so now your info is surprising and hopeful lol

We'll just have to wait, but I think it might be time for me to consider what life without Stanford might be like.

  7. no. but i thought they were e-mail since everyone has been posting Stanford interview invites via emial?

So I just called my department specifically (biology), and they said "they're in the process of sending things out within the next week or so"... perhaps there is hope. did you call the main office, or your program specifically?

  8. Does anyone know which of the home departments at Stanford sent out interviews for sure (chem/systems, immuno, bioinformatics, maybe cancer...)?

Their website says invites might go out until late January (but that they started this week), and that interviews are Feb 26 to Mar 2 - can anyone confirm those dates?

I apologize if this has already been cleared up.

  9. I'd change it a little. I also knew my letter writer fairly well, and was a little less formal: It basically went "Dear So-and-so, As you know, the NSF GRFP deadline for reference letters has been pushed back to today at 5pm (my time zone). Please let me know if you need anything else before submitting the letter today, or if the official NSF email didn't not make it to you. Thanks!"

  10. I would send a gentle email reminder - especially if you are in a different time zone than the "8pm" deadline. One of my letter writers only just submitted their letter, too... After a gentle reminder. Good luck!

  11. Quick question! For the citations/references - does it matter what style we use? Is it okay to have a super condensed version, as follows?:

    Last, F. Journal Name. (Year).

Or do we need to include the volume number and page numbers? I've found different answers in different places.

  12. I took a few practice tests through Magoosh and Powerprep, and studied with the Magoosh quant lessons.

    Powerprep 1: 154Q/161V (315) - before I did any studying

    Magoosh 1:  158Q/154V (312)

    Magoosh 2:  157Q/160V (317)
    Magoosh 3: 159Q/162V (321)
    Powerprep 2: 162Q/163V (325)

    Magoosh score predictor: Q: 158-163, V: 157-162

    Real GRE: 161Q/166V (327)

Overall, I think Magoosh did a great job of preparing me - their lessons are great for someone who hasn't done high school math in a while... I do wish I had scored a wee bit higher in quant, though.
