  1. From GPPI: --- Dear XXXX, You should expect to receive a decision by the end of this week. Best, Office of Admissions, GPPI --- no news is good news. i wonder if that means i'm getting a letter of rejection or an email rejection.
  2. gtown must be realllllllllllllllllllllly uninterested in me. My app went complete on 01/23, and I emailed them Friday to ask when I might expect a decision and they didn't even bother to respond. Ouch
  3. I haven't technically visited NYU's campus, per se, but I did turn in my additional documents in person to the Wagner department, which is on the second floor ( i believe) of one of the NYU buildings. Very chic! I like the area it's in too...which is technically one of the more "trendy" areas of town. Not far from China town or Union Square.
  4. Yes I'm studying about as much as one can be. Even with my full time job, I've been preparing on my own for the test again, even though I'm taking a course in April. Starting all over with lsat prep from scratch, and I'm understanding the test a lot better. I'm kind of excited :-D In terms of the debt, I too was concerned about the extra tuition, but if I end up starting at GWU's MPP, I'm going to apply early decision for their law program because if you're accepted this way, they pay all of your tuition. Since I think they give you a flat tuition rate for doing a dual degree program, my tuition wouldn't necessarily increase just because I'm doing more than one program. it seems that, if I get in ED, it will have made my overall cost less than it would have been had I only done the MPP. I have to look into any restrictions they might have for applying ED for law at GWU, but if I'm right, I don't think I could pass up that route.
  5. im doing it too..or trying to. my lsats suck so i'll be starting the mpp first then apply to the jd in 09.
  6. Thanks O! :-) By the way, I don't see why international students would be at a disadvantage for jobs here...especially because they will be enrolling in a school in the states. Though, I'm not sure how it works. What kinds of things do you need to work here in the states that your enrollment at a school here wouldn't necessarily help your work status? Is it a work visa? If so, could a school provide you with the permission you need to work in the states?
  7. it seems reasonable that you would want to mention/speak toward certain limitations of a master program. You could affectively argue such "limitations" if you had a topic in mind.....one that you want to explore such that the classes and in-the-field opportunities offered wouldn't necessarily give you more insight. You'll have to take classes anyway, but maybe there aren't enough relevant ones to fill out an entire master program that matches and/or contribute to with your interest. [and if they dont contribute to your topic interests at all, then you have to ask yourself why you applied to that particular school/program.] Overall, you'll want to speak toward the qualifications you have that are well in advance of those who fill out master programs...qualifications that are well in advance of what a master program could provide you in your anticipated career field. You'll want to answer the question. " what makes me just as/more qualified than individuals with a master's degree?" Like the above poster noted, you should know what makes you qualified. Therein lies your answer. It's like arguing why you deserve to be associate as opposed to the assistant.
  8. Your numbers are great though, especially the GRE scores, which speaks volumes for any "less reputable"undergrad education. Good Luck!
  9. What area are you looking to go in? one resource, which is where I found my current job is idealist.org (it's a great website for those who are looking to go into the public service sector); monstertak.com is a good site too, much more directed than monster.com.
  10. you all have some stellar backgrounds. I'm sure some pretty sweet acceptances are on their way to your mailboxes 8)
  11. Yes, I'd like to keep my job since it so closely related with the program. I'd probably only work for the first year though, because I would be re-applying to the law school to start its program in 09.
  12. My numbers: GPA:3.1 Double Majored in Math and Econ at a top20 private university. graduated in 2006. GRE:480V, 650Q, 3.5A. Work experience: currently working for a social policy research firm doing quantitative research (almost 2 years) [which I think is the main reason I've been accepted anywhere]. Extra:For those who don't intend to work (which is recommended) before going on to grad school, I also did a semester long policy-related research project during my senior year.I'm also an URM(under-represented minority).
  13. Did you say colored???? uhm.okay. anyway. I was born and raised in baton rouge, not very far from LSU, and although I never attended, I was often on or around the campus for other activities, so I was exposed to a lot of the "lsu culture," which is certainly centered on 'lettin' the good times roll' (look it up later; I don't know how to spell this in Creole). Like the above poster said, lots of football, lots of music, lots of people, lots of fun. If you want to feel like you are a part of the heart of Louisiana culture, you'll be in good company at LSU. Sure there is racism in Louisiana. But I've lived in almost every part of the nation, with exception to the west, and I've seen it everywhere. I've never been exposed to overt racism (and I'm in the racial minority). But it has been my experience that a facial expression is worth a thousand words. Weather: hot and humid, almost all the time. But the scenery is great in the summer. Baton Rouge is a college town, centered on LSU. Take advantage of this. If you wear your LSU shirt anywhere outside your apartment, you're one of us.
  14. That makes sense. Seems like the ones that got acceptances heard the week before last. Either they have already made their decisions or maybe they send out a round of acceptances and rejections every couple of weeks. I'm getting to the point where I don't care as much. I've gotten a slew of rejections (law schools) in this cycle, with the first one being from Gtown, so I think I'm pretty tempered for a rejection, especially with my numbers. Good luck! We'll find out soon enough!
  15. Are you one of the individuals who posted your acceptance on the results page? If so, WELCOME! And If not, WELCOME! :-D I was hoping someone who had been accepted into Gtown for the program would post on here. Congrats on your acceptance and congrats on consideration for a scholarship! You must have great numbers! Does your online app just say complete?
  16. I'd like to know info on this too. I am currently working in my intended field and have gotten accepted to GWU with no funding. The good news is that none of their classes start until after 5 so working, via VPN, certainly looks favorable. But I don't know when I'd get my class work done :?:
  17. That's a horrible impression for them to give. Why do they have to be so cold? I think it would be rather helpful if they could at least tell you the strengths and weaknesses of your app, especially for PH.D applicants, where the race is much tighter than most others. That information could really help us all choose a school that is either better suited for our qualifications, or even encourage us to strengthen our weak points for the next round!
  18. Hmm...now I'm starting to wonder what GWU's MPP acceptance rate is. It has to be ridiculous. I also heard that they just generally do not give out many fellowships and assistantships, something like under 10 (I can't be sure of this though; I'm waiting to hear back from Matto so I'll let you know for sure), so if this is true, students are making it work somehow. Since this is my second choice, I'm going to hound them a bit to see if they can throw me some clues and tricks on how to afford their education. Georgetown is super appealing right now because I was reading that it allows its MPP students to take classes in other departments, including the law center. This is great because I want to be able to state my case (again) at the end of the of the fall semester for a law school admission. That would just be perfect. Oh and by the way, I'm sorry I didn't answer your questions about Syracuse and the twin cities. I'm not familiar with either program, I only know from the posted rankings and from word of mouth from a few people that Syracuse has the best MPP program in the nation right now. Orange, what are your top choices for the MPP?
  19. I received my gwu letter in the mail today and I didn't qualify for a fellowship/assistantship either. Does that mean no financial aid at all? Because I filled out my fasfa recently and figured that should help me out at least a little bit. right? I only know that my Gtown decision must be pending since my app went complete on 1/22. I read on the website that they typically make decisions by the end of february or early march, which we are approaching. They said if we don't hear anything by then we should contact them. I just figured since I got my decision online for GWU, that I might receive something similar at gtown, since they both use applyyourself. So don't lose hope. You should hear something fairly soon, and it could be great news! I'm just grateful for GWU right now. location is a huge factor for me and this would set me up. Though more debt could certainly hurt me.
  20. anyone who applied to Gtown know if they provide online decisions? These would be decisions you could see via your online application.
  21. In the spirit of the race to the House, I have an article here regarding the candidates' (and some that recently dropped out) anti-poverty policy positions. Sorry, the article is a few pages, so I couldn't post it here. Plus, it's a pdf. Enjoy http://www.stanford.edu/group/scspi/pdfs/pathways/winter_2008/Blank.pdf
  22. I wrote the optional essay on #3, the broken bridge. Mine wasn't that long, maybe a page. I wrote it because my numbers aren't strong. But I have two years of ongoing professional research experience at a social policy firm in NYC, so I felt like I could relate some of that in my optional essay. My numbers: 3.1. GRE:480V, 650Q, 3.5A. Double Majored in Math and Econ at a top20school. graduated in 2006. I fully expected that my numbers will hurt my chances, but I've gotten accepted into 2 great programs already, so I am grateful even if I don't get accepted into anymore programs.
  23. how long after you you received your acceptance did you hear about lack of funding at GWU? I haven't gotten an acceptance packet yet, but I saw my decision posted online on 2/11. Should I expect to hear something back soon?
  24. Having been recently admitted to GWU's MPP program, I'd be interested to know how they rank with other schools like Georgetown, which is my first choice. On GWU's website, they said they were ranked 10 overall, but U.S. news website is totally for the birds. I hate how vague and unhelpful it is. I know I applied to all good schools but I'm just not sure how great they are in comparison with one another. If you can please share yours insights about MPPs across the nation: I have particular interest in: GWU, Gtown, and NYU (MPA-PNPP) Thank You ?
  25. I've also applied for the MPP/MPA program at the following schools: WUSTL (actually an MA in political economy and public policy): no decision yet NYU-WAGNER (MPA-PNPP):no decision yet Vanderbilt (MPP): accepted on 02/06/2008 Georgetown (MPP-First choice hopeful): no decision yet George Washington University (MPP): accepted on 02/11/2008
