  1. I have a lot of questions here. Is anyone willing to help me? First of all, it's my second year applying and I'm on 3 wait lists...same as last year. My problem is that I don't know what to do next year if I don't get in. I currently live in Wisconsin and desperately want to move to St. Louis. There's a university down there that has a masters in special Ed program where you can earn your initial teachers certification too. The problem is, do I really want to do special Ed? I'm tried of waiting to get into a grad program for speech. Does anyone have any comments on special Ed? Another possibility is that I could take another year off and try to improve my GRE scores and then reapply, but what are the possibilities of getting in next year? I was also looking into applying for spring admission but I'm not too quite certain on how competitive they are. In simpler words, do I move to St. Louis and earn my masters in special Ed or do I continue living in a city I hate and at a job i despise and wait until I get into school for speech?
  2. I have numerous related work experiences, including working as a line therapist for 3 years, tutoring elementary and high school students in reading in math for 2 years, working as a summer camp leader for people with disabilities for one summer, and I'm currently working as a rehab tech in a rehab center and I observe numerous speech sessions. Also, I was a member of the NSSLHA chapter at my undergrad university for 2 years and my senior year I served as president of the chapter. I thought that my numerous experiences and high GPA would make up for my low GRE scores, but it isn't working. I find it kind o hard to spend $500+ on a prep course that might not even benefit me. What are some other good ways to prepare for the GRE?
  3. Thanks for all the replies. Yes I have thought about taking the GRE again but I am horrible at standardized tests. So I thought that by applying to schools that don't use the GRE, that I would have a better chance. I've already taken the GRE twice and my scores only improved by a point or two. Does anyone know if the GRE courses helpful that are offered through Kaplan?
  4. I feel like I'm in the same boat has most people on here. It's my second year applying and I've been rejected at 3 schools, waitlisted at 2, and still waiting to hear from 1. But the odds of getting into a program are slim. I spent numerous hours researching schools and had a professor of mine look over my SOP. I know my GRE scores are low and I applied to 2 schools that don't use the GRE and got rejected from 1 and waitlisted at the other. It's my dream to be an SLP but I have no idea what else I can do to be a better applicant.
  5. So I have come to the realization that I probably won't get into school again this year. However, I'm trying to think of ways to improve my application. My GPA is average for a lot of schools but my GRE scores are below average. How important r the exam scores anyways? Should I think about retaking it? Also, I had a hard time having my professors write me a letter of rec this year, should I have them write letters of rec again or ask my employers?
  6. 2nd rejection today, this time from the school I did my undergrad at. I'm beginning to lose hope. The only schools in have left to hear from are my "reach" schools. It's already my 2nd year applying, I really don't want to take another year off.
  7. Dutt0054, do you think that by working as an SLP has helped you to be a better applicant? I'm really considering doing this if I don't get into school. Last year I applied to 4 schools and was put on 3 waitlists and never got off any of them. I thought by working as a rehab tech would give me more experience but it hasn't worked in my favor yet.
  8. a few other people have said that you can hold a temporary license in Minnesota and practice as an SLP, I've recently looked into this as a backup plan and I'm wondering how it works. Do you need the license before you apply to jobs and do job postings say they are willing to hire non masters people?
  9. Got my first rejection of the year today from University of Minnesota Duluth. And I thought I had a great chance of getting in there. 4 more to hear back from. What is everyone's suggestion on emailing a school about the waitlist?
  10. I've been working as a rehab tech since June and I work with children with autism. I've previously tutored students in math and reading, worked with people with disabilities, and was president of NSSLHA during my undergrad senior year. I know I still have 5 to hear back from but last year I was on 3 waitlists and never got off any of them.
  11. After reading through nearly every post on here, I've finally decided to create an account. So this is my second year applying to grad school, I've only heard back from 1 out of 6 schools, and I'm already fearing the worst. I have numerous experiences related to the field and I have no idea on how to improve my application if I don't get in this year, any suggestions?
