  1. I received a confirmation email the same day I sent mine.
  2. I received a "B" category with a 13. It would be very nice if I were to have that bumped up but I am happy with my Fellowship!
  3. If I did put in a timeline it was because it was a box to fill out that specifically asked for it. I would not have volunteered that information. I don't know if we are capped, though it's suggested one is done within 5 years (presumably because that is when all funding sources are exhausted if you're full time.)
  4. My stats (I'll edit this post when I get my letter): Received 20k/4 year SSHRC. Just completed 1st year PhD. 1 year PhD GPA was 4.15/4.3; I had less than a 4.0 for my cumulative MA GPA (3.5 years), though my last year was a 4.something (I think 4.08). 0 publications 12+ conferences, including 1 regional, 1 national, and 1 international 1 teaching course at major Canadian University, 5+ courses at Quebec CEGEP, over the last two years. Several guest lectures/invited panelist (Like Zaftig, my field is very specialized) 6 TAships 1 RAship 1 External fellowship during my MA (final year). This was my first time applying for a SSHRC.
  5. I called my graduate department (uOttawa) and they told me over the phone that I won a 4 year SSHRC. I'll post my stats when I receive the letter, as I'm not sure yet what my score was. I was too excited to remember to ask them.
  6. Congrats everyone! I'm still waiting....patiently. Kinda.
  7. Hi Alex - where did this info come from? (More specifically, were they all from the same university?)
  8. Every time twitter bings at me with a SSHRC tweet, I get anxious. The word "storyteller" will be forever in my nightmares.
  9. I sent an email to the department assistant this morning and she confirmed that we will know before they will if we have received an award. I also just returned from getting my mail, and there's nothing there of course. Wishful thinking. Mail comes at 10:30 every morning here, so I guess I can go do something productive for the next 22.5 hours.
  10. I am obsessively alternating between this page and twitter. And catching up on Game of Thrones, which seemed appropriate.
  11. Nope! I got the notification and started following them after. I'm not particularly twitter saavy, but I am searchable by the name I used on my application. I don't want to get my hopes up but that was kind of exciting. And maybe slightly creepy.
  12. I am. And oddly enough, SSHRC started following me on twitter. I'm not sure if that means anything.
  13. Ugh. I had a dream last night that SSHRC accidentally mailed our letters a week early and mine was sitting in my mailbox when I got home from class. And just as I tore the envelope apart, my alarm went off. DAMN THESE OMINOUS DREAMS! I thought I was handling the wait fine.
  14. I've scoured the statistics pages for past applicant success rates for my particular field, but i am curious as to find out how many from my university department specifically have received SSHRC after making it to nationals (i.e. percentage of successful out of the total)? As far as I know, from my cohort (1st year PhD), I am the only one who was bumped up (we are a small group). I don't know how many from the other cohorts have, however.
  15. They met for the entire week in Ottawa last week (not sure on the exact LOCATION, but I do know that the professor I know on the committee was there for the whole week adjudicating). I should add, however, that I do not know if she is on the committee for the MA applications or PhD application (or Post Doc).
  16. I doubt we will hear before April. I know someone on the adjudication committee and they just met this week. I would think that if decisions were made by Friday, there are a few weeks of paperwork that must be completed before they can notify us.
  17. I would hope that my role as both a TA and professor (as I teach at a community college part time) includes teaching students how to properly engage with others. I'm always shocked at the poor level of customer service I receive in almost every industry (and having worked pre-university in customer service, this is a big issue for me.) As much as I would love to believe that every one of my students will go on to graduate school, become authors, teachers, or CEOs, the reality is that many of them will end up in one way or another, working with people. If I can take a moment out of my day to teach them how to 1) properly address someone, 2) properly format an e-mail, or 3) learn some patience when it comes to technology, then I have at least succeeded at something.
  18. I was on vacation and came back to two emails from the graduate department - apparently on my application, my current employment was in reverse order, making me a TA rather than a Student. In any case, they sent a second email to tell me they would fix it for me since they realized i could no longer access the application. Does this mean they are considering moving me on? Doesn't seem to me they would care if they were planning on telling me no...
  19. I'm a little confused - I thought you wanted to teach, but now the debate centres around TAing. I too am in the humanities and an RAship is coveted FAR more than a TAship. I'm guaranteed a TAship with my scholarship, but an RAship means that a professor who has received a SSHRC grant has taken a special interest in me to work for them. RAs are hand picked, whereas TAs are luck of the draw. Either way, a TAship is not the same as teaching. I say that because I have a TON of TA experience (between my MA and PhD, I've TAed 7 or 8 courses and have one coming this winter) but no one noticed me until I took on a teaching position at a local community college. Suddenly I'm now viewed as a "colleague" where before I was really just another student. Granted, I am also in a very special area in my field and so I often have to turn down teaching opportunities because there are few here who are able to teach the courses.) I've also heard first hand from department chairs that when looking for faculty positions post-graduation, they will be more interested in my RAship and the amount of money I can bring into a department than my teaching experience. (because we all know RAships are money coming INTO the department, whereas TAships are money going OUT of the department).
  20. I have SERIOUS anxiety issues, but I am also a college lecturer and a part time lecturer at a university. I third (fourth?) the "baptism by hellfire" scenario because that was the only way I could do it. Once I had some experience it wasn't so bad but I still get nervous if it's a new group or the first day of class. Incidentally, I'm no longer nervous in my seminars thanks to just jumping in. I also find it helpful (particularly when I don't know anyone in the class) to "act". I'm not being someone else, I'm just acting like me, but if I wasn't such an introvert with social anxiety. It's all about putting on a performance and if I can get my mind wrapped around "how I look in front of the class is not a direct reflection of who I am as a person" I can get through it. By the end of term I'm very comfortable around my students but it comes with practice and time. edited to add - I once told a professor who I greatly admired about my anxiety and he confessed to me that he still had, after 25 years, butterflies in his stomach on the first day of class every term. I don't know why, but that made me feel a lot better, because to watch him work a room is like watching magic happen.
  21. Anyone else here from uOttawa? Our deadline seemed later than others, but I am curious if anyone has gotten feedback about moving forward yet?
  22. Hi! I tried to search for this but came up with nothing, so if this is a duplicate post, I humbly apologize. I recently applied to University of Ottawa to do a PhD. They generally offer admissions funding automatically if your GPA (last 30 credits) is 8.0/10.0. I come from a Quebec university, using a 4.3 scale. I'm having a terribly time trying to figure out how to calculate the conversion. Best I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a standard formula. In any case, I have an overall GPA for the last 30 credits of 3.69 (though my GPA for the last year was 3.95, I had a semester where one of my children was quite sick and my grades dropped). Could anyone venture a guess of how far off I may be of the 8.0?
