  1. The letter arrived today, and it was a rejection. Thanks for the info since that doesnt sound like a program i wouldve wanted to attend either (had they admitted me, that is)...i wonder if they're making any offers at all given what your friend said about not hearing anything about recruitment? Anyhow, hope theres some good news coming down the pipe soon for you and me both...this wait is killing me!
  2. anyone heard back from USC yet? my status on the website changed to 'you'll be notified via postal mail' and it also says they don't disclose admission decisions by any other means. Despite what they say about not disclosing decisions via phone/e-mail, this probably means a rejection....right?
  3. thanks for making that call to CUNY! i too got the invitation, which i thought nothing of, but was worried after seeing that acceptance post. what CUNY told you makes sense since their deadline was just a few weeks ago.
  4. Hate to be an obvious cop, but it all depends on the area you want to pursue. Also, since it's a Visual Studies program as opposed to traditional art history programs, the size of cohorts is probably small unless you're doing modern/contemporary. but in terms of employment, i don't think a UCI degree is bad especially if you want to stay in California.
  5. I'm thinking probably California schools? All my CA schools had earlier deadlines than the east coast schools, so I'm guessing I'll hear back from at least one of them before the rest. who knows. you?
  6. i think statistically, yes, the future a humanities PhD holds is bleak. but obviously that doesn't mean that everybody who gets a humanities PhD is screwed. it's helpful to proceed with caution and be aware how tough it will be, but i don't think articles like that should stop you if you're really serious about it. if you decide not to pursue a PhD from reading the articles (which includes facts AND subjective arguments), you weren't probably into the idea in the first place anyway.
  7. ha i know what you're talking about. i have a friend who specializes in the exactly same area and period as mine. On one hand i think it'll be nice to have a friend working in the same area, but on the other hand it means we're directly competing against each other during admissions..
  8. I just felt like starting up a thread, and I'm curious about what area/period everyone specializes in. I'll go first: postwar American art. Identity politics.
  9. i think it depends on the situation. I e-mailed this one professor whom i was already in contact with just to let the prof know that i submitted my application and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I was too concerned that maybe it's against some admission rule where you're not supposed to contact a POI after submission, but i got a friendly response and it was all good. (whether or not i get in is a different question.) but like everybody else mentioned, i would be cautious. I would certainly NOT e-mail a prof you're not already in contact with. Introduction e-mails should happen before you submit applications. either way, those e-mails don't necessarily determine the chance you have with schools, so i wouldn't worry about it too much. good luck!!
  10. That toefl thing you're going through sounds so annoying! i was born outside the US too, but i think all my schools automatically waived TOEFL for me since i went to college in the US. None of my schools list it as an unmet requirement as far as i can tell, but same thing could happen to me. what im going through is a couple of my schools are saying they haven't gotten my GRE score or my college transcript. I e-mailed all of them today after giving them 3-4 weeks to process the material. We'll see what they say. All the admission committees are probably getting a ton of emails right now so i don't expect the turnaround to be very quick. I saw a couple of more art history posts on the results board. ahhhhh nerous!!
