  1. The poor Ivy Leaguer... boo effing hoo!
  2. Beginning to hope that some of these programs don't interview everyone they accept... otherwise this isn't looking too good.
  3. Who scored the Harvard admit? Congrats!
  4. Any other UCLA, Columbia, and Harvard musicology applicants out there?
  5. I see that someone posted an acceptance under "Chicago Musicology." Haven't heard anything yet though... nervous!
  6. Just a bit curious Karajan, since you seem to have had a pretty stellar round with your applications... how well-off were you in terms of conference presentations/publications? I imagine you had some pretty strong writing samples/recs as well?
  7. Yeah, I've been looking over the dates from previous years as well... certainly not representative, as you said, but it is still fun to try and guess!
  8. Haven't heard a peep... maybe not a good sign from Northwestern. Did you do a phone/Skype interview with Columbia Karajan? If so, when were you first informed?
  9. Congrats to the SUNY Buffalo admit in musicology!
  10. Someone had a phone interview with Northwestern on January 9th!?!?!?!?!
  11. Congrats to whoever scored the Northwestern interview! Hopefully a few more will trickle out...
  12. All submitted... just waiting on recs!
  13. 4/6 submitted... waiting for some revisions on a third writing sample and I can submit the final 2... now to just make sure my recommenders submit on time!
  14. Am I the only person that doesn't want to submit applications until all the recommendations have been completed? Several of my applications are totally ready to go, barring one final section-by-section check... am I totally crazy? Every school seems to be fine with recommendations coming in after the application is submitted... but I feel so paranoid that something weird will happen if I do that.
  15. Ah... you would think it could be simpler to just have a section in the application before you submit. I suppose I've logged into so many ApplyYourself portals that one tends to overlook the right side! Thanks!
  16. Not sure where else to post this... I see that we are supposed to fill out Harvard's "Supplemental Data Form," but I cannot seem to find it anywhere. Nothing appears in my application... am I missing something?
  17. Eh, it just seems like a bit of a waste to provide less... I'd rather the ad comm have as much of my writing available for their perusal as possible!
  18. Anyone have experience with writing sample submission for Harvard? I have way more than 20 pages worth of material, but they are all in 12-15 page chunks (conference papers). I actually have short published materials... perhaps attaching them at the end of the longest conference paper as a single document would be a good idea to hit the 20 limit (make mention of it in the title field)? I sent Harvard an e-mail asking about this, but it has been a week and I don't think I'm going to hear anything...
  19. Just wondering what the thoughts are on submitting/not submitting a cluster statement in the Northwestern University app... I just don't think I know enough about the programs aside from what is available on their website and I don't want to unintentionally lock myself into something that I can join into at any point in my time at Northwestern.
  20. Actually music, one of my advisors had a great way of describing how to approach a diversity statement. The admissions committee wants to see if you play well with others! In that way, it might be in your best interest to provide a short and succinct statement. I am definitely not a diversity home run, but the city in which I have lived and performed my master's research is an extraordinarily diverse city with people from all over the world co-mingling and interacting, particularly at my university... so that is what my advisor suggested I write about. I bonked myself on the head because it was so obvious... always helps to have another perspective when you have issues or questions like that.
  21. I'm drafting my SoPs and hoping for some feedback on my writing samples from a faculty member quite soon. I plan on hitting it pretty hard during this month and then submitting everything during the first week of November. Any thoughts on the word count ceiling for a Diversity Statement? I was thinking 500-600 words (definitely doesn't need to be 1,000 like my SoPs right?).
  22. Hey everyone... I actually applied to U Chicago in 2011 and now that I have begun an application in 2013, it appears that all the GRE info I provided 2 years ago is still "verified." Anyone else able to confirm this? I'd love to not spend another $25 sending them a GRE score report they do not need. Still waiting to hear from the UChicago Humanities contact on this...
  23. So I've been thinking about this recently... since a lot of programs have page limits in their online document submission programs, is it appropriate to upload just the text of the paper without the bibliography/cover page/etc. so you can save space?
  24. I'm still debating on what to submit. Some places appear to want two contrasting papers (one analytical / one historical) while other schools would prefer a chapter from the thesis. I've actually got a fair number of writing samples/conference papers that just need to be looked over and revised a bit more and then it's basically strategizing. I'm sure my advisor will have some thoughts on what exactly to use.
  25. I wouldn't get too down on the GRE scores CP3. My GRE scores aren't perfect either, but every other aspect of my application will leave no room for doubt that I'm serious about research and have already demonstrated a capacity to both present and publish.
