  1. Audiology is awesome. I've been going through similar thoughts but with Public Health. All my experience relates to community and behavioral health, and if I dont get accepted, I am considering expanding my applications to programs next fall. If I get in, who knows. Maybe I'll go back to school in 5 years to get a PhD in PH. Oh, the possibilities! After you get all your acceptances, I would consider what's the better choice for you. As an Aud, you get to earn a Doctorate and have one of the lowest stress careers! The worst of your worries would be annoying, time-wasting "malingerers." You should talk to Aud majors- because a LOT of people make the switch from Speech to Aud- and reflect on what it was that you wanted as an SLP.
  2. Getting through classes... waiting to hear where I'm going to end up so I can finalize a spring schedule. I was hired onto the research team for which I have been volunteering; I now put in 5 days/week up at OHSU ! At least it's making the time pass more quickly
  3. Dream: UNC-CH acceptance Hope: MGHI acceptance Guess: Rej/waitlist @ UNC (just trying to be a realist); waitlisted/accepted into MGHI I think the waiting has really made me second guess all my credibility!! And the fact that I misspelled a word on my SOP.... I guess we'll see what that leads to!
  4. Well, at least I can stop looking at my phone for a week! It'll be nice to hear back from both programs at the same time. Maybe I'll even wait to open emails on the same day, just to keep it balanced! Congrats LaAud and everyone else who's gotten inverview invites and acceptances!
  5. Anyone heard from UNC-CH yet? I was looking at the result posts from last year and it seemed people started hearing about acceptaces around now.
  6. Hello all! I am currently considering a Master's in Public Health and am wondering what it was that got you here? If I could get a sample of some GPA/GRE stats and backround for interest in the field, it may help me verify if Public Health is the right track. Currently, I am applying to a Master's in Speech-Language Pathology, though all my work experience directly relates to Public Health. If I don't get admitted into the Masters in SLP programs for 2014, I'm considering broadening my applications to include MPH programs. I am interested in Community Health and research, participate in 2 research studies, have started a literacy intervention program, speak 2 languages, and have numerous teaching certifications. Any input would be very helpful! I was considering a PhD in Public Health after my Masters in SLP, but have to hear back from schools before that path becomes concrete. Best of luck in acceptances!
  7. For sure!!! I didn't realize they has an early action option. I wish more programs did that!!
  8. typically, a person who can speak to your academic ability is favorable. I have 1 prof. from my undergrad, 2 prof from post-bacc, 1 from a teacher from my Montessori training program, and 1 from an SLP colleague. I was going to delete one of my post-bacc prof's letters on the 1st because I had 4 at that point, but that was the day she submitted it. I hope having 5 isn't too much....
  9. You could include it in an intro or first paragraph. Something like, "I knew I wanted to be a Health Professional when I was 5. My father was diagnosed with brain cancer, and I..." Then go on in your discussion of studying health at your university and the development into Speech and Hearing Sciences.
  10. Have you written them a reminder email? Sometimes it helps. I had a professor that literally waited until January 1st when my application was due to submit. I had sent her a reminder email in addition to resending the CSDCAS letter of recommendation request. In the meantime, I had asked another professor to write one and she finished it the next day. I suggest reaching, give a call if you have a phone number, and consider asking an additional professor.
  11. Sent my final app in today!!! Hurray!!! After I sent in my final essay, I went to have my MacBook Pro rebooted to find out the harddrive is on the brink of crashing. SO relieved it didn't happen during my application process. Good luck to everyone finishing them off!! Can't wait for all the reports on acceptances. In 2-3 months, we will all be getting good news!
  12. You're a strong candidate. I am also pretty much trilingual (Spanish and Portuguese). Originally I thought I wanted to do a bilingual concentration, but I have found greater interest in reading disorders and literacy. For that reason, l am only applying to two top 25 ranked schools. I'm not worried about getting in. I am pretty confident I will be accepted at MGH Institute, and I will probably be waitlisted at UNC. If not, I have no problem taking a second year and exploring my options. I'm just glad to send these off!! Tonight, por fin!
  13. @autismadvocate, I've been helping a lot of friends finalize their essays, and I prefer formal essays. I think focusing on one topic is good; it's your Master's, you want to come across as mature, sophisticated, and with direction. Like you, most of my experience centers around literacy, and I want to study literacy so much of my essay addresses the concentration. The only way it could be disadvantageous would be if you used that essay to get into a program without an Autism concentration.
  14. You're applying to speech programs- most consider just your q and v portions, with emphasis on the verbal. I would suggest sticking with the first, because having a higher verbal score is more important than your quant or writing.
  15. Are you applying mostly from CSDCAS? Remember your résumé highlights the less influential experiences. For my statement I ran a bit of a story line with some reflections and forthoughts to keep it interesting. My advice is write it all out today, then read it tomorrow and rewrite again. Find a way to tell how you grew and were directed without describing the details of what you were doing. As I said, the school will see your résumé and can fill in little details from there. Hope this helps!
  16. Congratulations!!! I finished yesterday as well and am looking forward to finalizing apps this weeksnd. Can't wait to send them off!!
  17. **Cad collate= Oscillate- that's what I get for not reading before I post!! haha
  18. I addressed my situation in literally one sentence, and as a method to bring attention to the higher marks I have in other semesters. Best to draw more attention to your strengths! Good luck
  19. SDSU is one of the most competitive, JMU and Syracuse have higher application:admission ratios, I dont know much about the Salus program. For most schools, the acceptance rates can cad collate between 10-20% acceptance. Schools in more rural areas tend to have higher acceptance rates as well as newer programs. Hope this helps!
  20. UNC Submitted on Tuesday.... Getting ready to finalize the last two!! Can't wait to get these out of my hands
  21. Make sure to check school websites!!! Some of the CSDCAS due dates are not correct. Additionally, ASHA's list of bilingual emphasis schools may be outdated. A friend and I have reached out to two of the schools that were listed to find more information on the bilingual options because there was nothing listed on the University's websites. The department contact responded to inform us that both of these schools do not offer bilingual options (these two schools were CU Boulder and MGHI). If anyone else has more information on these topics, feel free to update or clarify! Happy Friday everybody!
  22. Wow, Virginiarunninggirl! You have quite a lot of experience. I am kinda in the same boat. I feel really good about my chances because of my LOR, SOP, and experiences, though I am still cringing when I look at my GRE score and review my UG GPA. I am really open about the process this time around, because my schedule is flexible and I could potentially extend my post-bacc into a second UG if no Grad schools have room for me in their programs for Fall 2014. Realistically speaking, the year in between could really help me decrease the hefty debt that is bound to burn a hole in my wardrobe. I am involved in 2 research projects, I started and run a Language and Literacy Intervention Program in Seattle, am a former Montessori teacher, and have experience as a language tutoring. I am bilingual (almost tri, but my time in Portugal was short lived, so I'm honest and say my expressibility is basic), and am applying to schools with bilingual programs and large literacy departments. It makes my selection small, but like I said, I am comfortable taking the year off to apply again and up my GRE and GPA with a second bachelors What schools are you applying to?
  23. Hey Rach, I am only applying to schools on the CSDCAS system. For these schools, you can send a transcript before your final grades are posted. They have an interim period on CSDCAS, between December and February, when you can enter your new GPA into your application, and resend your original transcript with the fall quarter/semester GPA. It is really important to send everything in on time, so check the school... some require all the documents received by the due date, while others accept the due date as the post-marked date. I know people who have been admitted after handing materials in late, but I would not recommend taking the risk. Check with the schools that are not on CSDCAS for their typical protocol. I have found a quick phone call to be really helpful and informative.
  24. Hopefully with as many acceptance stories where are you applying, what's your background, and welcome!
  25. I'm considering adding UT-Austin to my list. Anyone else applying? Thoughts on the program?
