  1. While I definitely think this is true, I just started and have to pick a research topic without little input it seems. I can see working on my own after the comps & etc once my topic has been picked and I can just run with it. That I can definitely do. Most students seem to start off with a particular topic that their supervisor suggests for them and molds it into their own over 3-4yrs. By the end of which they are working autonomously.
  2. It's also much less likely to get a P/CGS-D straight from your Bachelors. You probably wouldn't even make it through the internal selection round unless you were REALLY amazing and already had some publications.
  3. I hope we get an email from Research Net or something instead of waiting on the snail mail or office admin. I'm starting to get nervous every time an email comes in.
  4. When I checked a while ago it orginially said March 31st (which is Sunday). Now it has changed to the 29th, so hopefully we will find out soon. I believe the number of Vanier scholars is dependent on the amount of research funding each University received from that particular funding agency (NSERC/SSHRC/CIHR). And this will determine the number of applications a school is willing to send and with the quality of the candidates on a national level the odds will change every year. So it difficult to guess your odds.
  5. Anyone else here have this problem? Normally I have no problem getting things done. During my Master's my supervisor had very high expectations and while I didn't have trouble meeting them, it was motivating to get your work done in a timely fashion. I moved to a new school in September and seem to have completely lost my motivation, probably in most part because my Supervisor seems to have absolutely no expectations of me. At least not in the short term. We don't meet regularly and I believe he expects me to conduct my research completely autonomously.... which would be fine if I was a post-doc... Any suggestions on how to boost your motivation?
  6. Nothing from Western yet. I guess some schools do follow those rules about not announcing the results until they have been released to the public.
