Fall 2014 applicants??
Ozymandias Melancholia replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Don't worry - in my template SOP, which I used for 11/13 schools, I had a dangling modifier. Pretty sure I screamed when I found it! Edit - A night of self-loathing ensued. -

Cool! Yeah, I'll be there. It'll actually be my first time experiencing New England. -

No problem! It's still a possibility that you'll be accepted to their MA program, which evidently includes the possibility of funding! -

I'm sort of confused by that posting because I've been wait-listed for their PhD program and spoke with the director, who informed me that they extended offers to four applicants, and wait-listed three. Perhaps it's referencing the fact that many PhD applicants receive offers to join the MA program? -

Depends on the program. Some MA programs have rolling admissions; however, the downside of programs with rolling admissions is that they rarely offer funding in that scenario. -

Yeah, I certainly took a risk by doing it. When I finished it, I felt so uncertain as to its merits as a writing sample. Now that I've had some distance from it, I'm rather proud of it in certain areas, and am already working on revising the parts I want to improve. Thankfully it's been received pretty well by my former professors and a POI. -

I wrote a brand-new paper. one that accurately reflected my research interests and corresponded with how I represented myself in my SOP. -

I'll second this statement and raise you with this: where's the closest microbrewery?

What are you reading?

I really love Boland's work, especially that collection. Have you read her memoir? I've been considering picking it up for some time. Anne Carson is probably my favorite contemporary poet, though. -

You've accurately summed-up my experience as well. It was difficult to get through due to the content and prose. While I thought certain chapters (or sections of chapters) were brilliant, I sometimes thought the application of his arguments to texts were lackluster, and didn't always deliver what his theoretical exposition sought to reveal. Plus, his prose was unbearable. I enjoyed his critique of cognitivism, though. -

Recently, I've been furthering my knowledge of my sub-fields of interests, which include history of science and affect theory/philosophy of emotions. I just finished Charles Altieri's The Particulars of Rapture: An Aesthetic of the Affects, and now I'm reading Brian Massumi's Parables for the Virtual: Movement, Affect, Sensation. I'm also re-reading Lyrical Ballads. -
I had my first experience with a POI contacting me yesterday. The context was a little different, however. I wasn't necessarily receiving a notification of an acceptance, but rather the POI wanted to express his enthusiasm and interest in working with me. He was extremely welcoming, and had many kind words to say about my writing sample. We share fairly specific research interests. Though I hadn't been officially accepted yet to the MA program, he mentioned that he'd try to put me at the top of the funding list. However, I felt strange asking certain questions, since the status of my application was in a liminal stage - not quite accepted, nor denied. So, many questions I would've asked seemed to rest on the assumption that I, in fact, was accepted. Also, I allowed my elation over the situation subsume my capacity to think clearly and form proper questions. In retrospect, I would've asked more questions, such as cohort size, general placement records, etc. I fear I sounded terse or inadequate in my responses, but I've rationalized to myself that POIs may be used to these reactions. *shrugs shoulders*
