  1. Yes we all had been notified through email that our application status had changed, and logged in to researchnet to check our status. CIHR doesn't send out anything through mail.
  2. Yes, if it's declined they give it to the next person. Were you close to getting it? People who got it have 15 days to respond and either accept or decline. So sometime after that. Not sure how many people decline it though.
  3. Nevermind, found it! Thanks! I did get three years : )
  4. OOh sweet. This is my first year PhD, so I put requested funding of 3 years, BUT the latest expected graduated date I could put in my application was Dec. 2016. It didn't allow me to input anything later. My PhD will probably take until 2017. Just wondering if I'll get 2 years or 3 years of funding from CIHR. Have any idea? I guess I'll figure it out tomorrow when they officially post the funding decisions on their website.
  5. Question for you depressedphdstudent (perhaps not so depressed anymore?). Are you already attending your university or starting in the fall?
  6. That's amazing, congratulations! Hug it out for sure
  7. Thank you! Good luck to everyone else who applied.
  8. For all of you who are waiting, here are the stats: DRA Committee A: 750 applications, 84 approved DRA Committee B: 526 applications, 60 approved
  9. My results just got posted! I got it.
  10. Thought it would be fun to share. What are the best comments or jokes re: grad school or higher education that would look great on a t-shirt?
  11. Hi all, I know that OGS is now at the program level, but any idea when we will hear? I assume it will be after CIHR results come out, but any clue how long after? My departmental deadline was Feb. 15th... Good luck everyone who applied!

    Meeting People

I don't really indulge in physical activity in the summer lol. I don't like the heat at all - in fact, I'd be happiest inside most of the summer in the air conditioning. Canoeing is an option though.
  13. Thanks for the suggestions! I think I might do Bay and College, or Queen West/King West/Richmond West, east of Bathurst. Re: clubs/events, I don't know if I'm able to join the clubs since I'm technically not a student. Thanks for the Hart House suggestion - never even heard of it!

    Meeting People

Thanks for the suggestions...Hanging out with the classmates isn't a possibility since I won't be taking any courses. I'm not sure about school clubs but am pretty sure I won't be able to join since I won't be a University of Toronto student.
  15. Thanks for the link! Thank you for the thorough response. I've heard the same about Torontonians being pretty cliquey...fun times ahead! I will definitely PM you!
  16. I agree with the pre-writing routine. When I'm in periods where every day needs to be extremely productive, I wake up, have tea and "pre-breakfast", and limit myself to watching one tv show in the morning. I know myself well enough that if I continue reading a book (my other relaxation method of choice), I won't be able to stop. A TV show episode works for me, because after 43 minutes, it's over. Maybe find something like that for you?

    Meeting People

This topic was part of another I posted elsewhere but thought it might be more appropriate here. I'm in my 1st year PhD, and am moving to Toronto in May for the rest of my PhD. I've been wanting to live in Toronto since I finished my Master's, and my supervisor and I arranged it so I could complete the majority of my data collection at U of T (2-3 years). A lot of work (on both our parts) has been put into making my move to Toronto happen, as I'm hoping to settle there long-term after my PhD is completed. I'm 26 years old, have completed 2 degrees (one in a research-based program), have worked professionally in my field, lived in 4 different cities, and still feel like I haven't really started my life. Anyone else feel like that? I've promised myself that I'm really going to try and get some life balance, and meeting likeminded people would go a long way in helping that. Plus, I want to enjoy the city and good friends are a big part of that. Typically I wouldn't be concerned about meeting people in grad school, since you meet a bunch of people in your program, but I feel like I'll be rather isolated given my situation...I won't be technically enrolled at U of T, nor will I be taking any coursework as I completed all of it at my "home" university. The lab I suppose I will be part of at U of T is also small (2 grad students only). Does anyone have any advice re: the best places/ways to meet people? It can be Toronto specific (or not). I've thought about joining recreational leagues (even though I'm not into that - I usually just do yoga). Any other ideas? PS. I have read some other posts on here, and just want to emphasize that I'm not specifically looking for a boyfriend (although if I were so meet someone amazing, all the better), nor am I asking about whether or not I'll have time to meet people (I'm not new to grad school, I am well aware of the time commitments).
  18. Nope, Queen's. You? It's kind of ridiculous. One of the reviewers scored me high, the other not so much. So subjective.
  19. I don't mind sharing my stats. They were quite atrocious. I think I was 78%? Close to the bottom. That year, I had 2 first author papers. This year, I have 3 first author papers in strong journals. I'm not holding my breath though, considering what happened last year.
  20. Interesting...the $18,000 is supposed to cover my living expenses and tuition. Do other universities typically offer that or is it usually tied to teaching? I think only 2k of that comes from TA position, the rest is "free".
  21. Thanks! You too. I'm always curious as well
  22. I'm currently in 1st year of my PhD and am moving to Toronto in May to do my final study. I have a couple of questions for those of you who live in Toronto as well. 1. Living situation: I'm looking to live close to U of T...anyone know of someone subletting their place? Any advice for where to stay away from, etc? I know Moss Park area is bad but that's the extent of my knowledge. 2. Meeting people: I have to admit, I'm a little nervous about meeting people. I'm not super outgoing to begin with, and I'm in a bit of an odd situation since I'll be collecting data at U of T but not technically enrolled in the university. I've done all my coursework etc. at my "home" university, so I won't be able to meet people that way either. I've told myself that when I move to Toronto, I'll really focus on getting some balance in life (i.e. having one outside of school) and meeting some like minded people my age would go a long way. Any advice about best ways to meet people?
  23. Hi all, I've been lurking on this site for about a year now, and had a question regarding unfunded PhD programs. When using the term "unfunded", does that typically mean you receive $0 from your university? The reason I am unsure is that my program guarantees each student at least $18,000 per year. It's the only grad school I applied to, so I'm not sure if that is the same across most (Canadian) universities, or if some grad schools really don't give any money at all. OR does "unfunded" typically refer to your research project, not to you as a graduate student..
