  1. Try getting in touch with the international students / international student clubs -- I'm sure they'll help. Contacting other new students might make you feel less overwhelmed. Also, get a GPS unit. I have a Megellan and it works in Cananda.
  2. Hi all, I don't know if this will concern everyone but here's my question -- How many papers (on average) do you guys expect to publish by the time you earn your PhD? I mean considering that we'll be busy taking classes, working as TA/RA, preparing for the qualifying exams and then working on the dissertation, when does one find time to publish papers. I understand that people generally try to get two papers published out of their dissertation work. So is two the norm, or is it more than that. Of course, more is always best. But what is expected?
  3. Sucks ^100, but good to know. Is this both Saturday and Sunday, part of both, or one whole and half another.
  4. Thats less then 5 hours of sleep. Musn't we sleep for 8 hours to really have our brains working on full capacity. How about the fall breakdown? Thanks.
  5. thanks applecat. this one's more comprehensive (but like you said, I'd have preferred the breakdown the regular semester). it seems like you do have time in the evening after 5:30 to do other things, like exercising (I need my high, and also need to shed quite a few pounds). thank you again.
  6. thanks applecat, but I was hoping more of a day's breakdown, not a weeks. But its good to know that you're almost always working.
  7. Hello Ghionus, if you're going to OK State, can you tell me when you're going. I'm thinking of moving to Stillwater the first week of August -- haven't received any word on orientation or any other thing of that nature. Let me know if you have. Thanks.
  8. Can any one briefly write their daily activities (time table, if you will). I am curious about how daily life is for phd students. Like many hours you study, when exactly -- where, if you don't have an office (it seems like I won't get one on my first year or because I am an RA - I'm not sure). Studying in the library would suck - it'd be very nice to be able to leave you stuff behind when you're done working. What do you do on weekends? Also, how do most phd students spend their summers -- the first summer in particular. Thanks.
  9. You can certainly work if you allocate your time properly. And if you don't have a TA/RA, then you can definitely work. TA/RA's work 20 hours anyway, so you can spend the same number of hours working elsewhere.
  10. How do you take your lunch to school? Is there a special bag to keep it warm (or cold) for hours? I hope you don't eat only sandwiches and salads. Me likes spicey food, and can't think of a way to keep the smell away. But $120-$130 gives me a lot of hope about my survival. Thanks.
  11. I noticed the missing allocation for food as well. But thanks for all your contributions - I hope more come.
  12. I'm trying to allocate me stipend. What % of your stipend should you allocated towards (on a monthly basis): Rent (including utilities, internet) Food Recreation Transportation (although I plan to walk) Child/ Spousal Care etc etc Is there any big ommission? I also want to try to save a portion so that I can do some travelling next summer. Is this possible ??
