GeoDUDE! reacted to dr. t in Let's be real: do lower GRE scores matter for an MA in rhet/comp? Getting conflicting advice...
You have clearly never worked in customer service

We don't close threads just because the initial discussion is done.
Glad there were no penalties, but did you get worked out the root of the misunderstandings? I don't think most of us were worried about penalties for this (since it was informal work), but rather that similar issues could cause you a problem down the road.

You are being so cryptic it's impossible to form an opinion. I can only conclude that you posted this in order to get everyone to agree with you and not actually get insight on your situation.

The situation that fuzzy (and others, but fuzzy summarized it really well) wrote about is fairly common in graduate school, especially for new students unfamiliar with research, or unfamiliar with the norms of the field.
You have written a few posts here now about similar problems and it's not clear if you're writing about the same problem or if there are a lot of problems going on all at once. In any case, but especially if you are facing multiple problems at the same time, I think it is really important for you to make sure you understand what the professors are really saying when you do meet with them.
From the posts here, when you say things like "2%" or saying the prof does not have evidence etc., to me, it sounds like you are approaching this the wrong way.
Of course, you should expect the professors to have evidence if they are going to sanction you for academic misconduct. However, before it gets to that, you should stop thinking about this as "the professor is wrong and I am right" or basically the view that the professor has to show you why you are not meeting expectations. Instead, drop your previous thoughts on plagiarism and really listen to what the professor(s) are saying. Suspend your own beliefs about whether or not you plagiarized and just listen to what the professor is saying. They will identify things that they think you are doing wrong (e.g. using another person's idea without attribution) and then you should talk to them about how you can change it.
The goal is not to prove your innocence or guilt. If it ever comes to that, then you will be facing expulsion from the program. Instead, right now, it sounds like what you should be trying to do is to understand why your work isn't acceptable and fix it. However, if you continue to treat it as an accusation and that these meetings are like "trials" then I think it will soon lead to a more serious discussion where the outcome will be to decide whether or not you can continue.

Perhaps the professor doesn't believe you have the ability to produce the work you have turned in.

if you get the minimum GPA required for your PhD program no one will ever know and the only one who might care is yourself.

I didnt know that there was a restriction to where I could post, especially when its on the most recent post sidebar. That's fine, I'll shut up, I just think that wanting to know if the color of my skin or my gender gives me an advantage is a bit short sighted; Wouldn't you want it to be an even playing field, or at least one where one's abilities arent in question.
Anyway, I'll shut up.

GeoDUDE! got a reaction from Cookie in How feasible is pursuing a PhD while teaching k-12?
@Amelu that's fine, just note that a PhD might make it harder to teach at "earlier years", but what is more grave, if I may speak bluntly, is that people who go into graduate school mostly for the "love of it" and "wanting to master it" are typically the types of students who take 10 years to finish their PhD, or even more likely, drop out. The one's who finish are the ones who want a job that love what they do AND what they love to do requires a PhD. They want to rule the world, so to speak. Its why so many academics are narcissistic.

I think a lot of this depends on why you are getting a PhD: are you going after academic jobs after? If that's the case, you are probably better off not getting a PhD if you do not get fully funded. If you are already behind the 8 ball on funding when your a PhD student... how are you going to outperform people for jobs who have already been awarded full funding? Like it or not there are teirs of grad students, and in this job market (any field) only really the best get academic jobs (and not necessarily the jobs they want).

GeoDUDE! got a reaction from elijahbaley in Buying a bike
Telkanuru has good advice. I also think it's worth going to a bike shop known for their service: I don't think there is much quality difference between specialized, trek and fuji at the 500-800 dollar hybrid bike range (or road bike), so the place you get it will often have more of an impact on your riding experience.
IF you think you want to go on weekend bike rides over 10 miles or so it might be worth getting a road bike. One thing to note is that road bikes are thief bate, so you should invest in a high end lock (50-80 dollars) and a cable or keep your bike inside during the day.
I live in a huge biker town, and haven't had any theift problems in a year: I notice people who get bikes/accessories stolen are people who do not lock up their bike properly. Make sure that when you buy your bike/lock the bike shop shows you how to do it and be diligent about it.
