Invited to Notre Dame recruitment weekend! Grateful for the opportunity. Hope others are hearing some good news or will hear soon!

Congrats to all the UC-Berkeley admits! Keep them rolling in! I am dying to hear from others!

My UMass application status still says "applied." I am wondering how the other UMass admits found out about their acceptances? ahhhh

Waitlisted for UW-Madison! So I suppose that's a start to the season? Hoping the next few weeks and months provide openings...But, congrats to all those already admitted at this point!

I have been working my way through Walt Whitman's The Complete Poems ("Death-Bed Edition) and Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (not my favorite, but still is quality). Also, my reading has been centered on finishing Thoreau's A Week and hopefully starting the Harry Potter books (just for kicks, should have read them as an adolescent) and beginning Moby Dick. Yay, books!

Hi all,
Just checking in for the first time in a long time. I decided to stay off GradCafe during the application months, but I am now realizing the allure of this site and the imminent decisions coming our way (whether acceptance or rejection, possibly waitlisted) is proving too difficult to resist. I figured I will find out either way, so I might as well jump into the forum headfirst! How is everyone doing with waiting for decisions? I see there were a few acceptances posted by some UK applicants and a small amount of American applicants. Any other news so far with decisions from those applying on this forum?
Also, feel free to contact me! I'll be bopping in-and-out of discussion threads on here as the returns on all our hard work, dedication, and smarts (hopefully) pays off!

Hi Francophile1,
Thanks for the response, very helpful! I know you said you got similar scores, would you mind mentioning what specifically those scores were? Also, are foreign language GRE scores equivalent roughly to English grad scores? Is there any differences or no as to what they generally look for? Congrats on getting in!

Thanks a lot for the responses! Would you mind mentioning what school you MA/BA was at? I'm always curious to find out what experiences people have had at certain schools? Also, by no means I'm shooting for the top 20 schools, but definitely anything 2nd tier and below!

I do have the option of re-taking it and I will for sure will! Washington is a possibility I am considering for applying but beyond washington I was wondering about lower-ranked schools as well and what their "general" scores were for verbal? Thanks for replying appreciate any posts!

Thanks for posting and offering a discussion for someone who is going through the grad school process. I got a 156 verbal, 153 quantitative, and a 5.5. writing for the GRE. Have you had any experience as to what would be cut-offs or minimum scores on the GRE for English programs? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Open to anyone....

Hi,
For all of you currently in English MA and/or PHD programs, is it possible for someone to do the coursework, teach classes (while going to school), and work a job on the side? Is their enough time or when programs say "full-time" they mean full-time? Just looking for perspectives on if working a job during Grad school while taking classes and teaching as a TA would be feasible? Any help would be great!

Hi all,
I know the GRE is not everything in determining acceptances to English MA/PHD programs, however, I am wondering in general what will get one cut? Does GRE determine funding in a lot of circumstances or is it more the writing samples/papers? I got a 156 (V) 72% percentile, 153 (Q), and a 5.5 (97%) on the Writing Section. Although these are not the "best" scores for English applicants, and I know they may not help for 1st tier programs, but I am simply wondering would these scores negatively affect my chances at even the lowest of ranked programs on the English PHD ranking lists? Should I re-take, I'm considering it...
Any information would be greatly appreciated!

oh cool, thanks that is actually really helpful, what program are you in?

Hi all,
I am graduating soon with a B.A. in English Ed. for one major and History/Social Studies Ed. for the other major. I am planning on applying to an English PhD program. My question is whether having an English Ed. degree over a pure English major would hurt or limit my chances for getting accepted to programs? Would schools look negatively on this fact even though I would have the roughly the same amount of literature courses and credits? Any information on this would be great! Thanks..

Mocha, where do you get in by chance? What school? Just wondering...

Hi all,
I am close to graduation from a lesser known state school and am new to the whole grad. school scene, basically trying to find out some essentials to applying to English Doctoral programs. I have a high GPA of 3.95/3.96, a 4.0 in my English major, and two majors total (one in History and one in English). I have three to four strong letters of recommendation from English professors I have taken classes with and worked with one on collaborative independent study and original research for my BA. I have strong statements of purpose for applications and transcripts. I have presented English papers at two conferences and am Vice presidents of both the Historical Honor Society and English Honor Society at my university as well, including winning a history scholarship and was nominated for a campus wide leader award. Furthermore, I have been TA for an English professor and TA for a history professor too. I have not taken my GRE or Subject Test as of yet, but intend on doing it soon.
I am posting this piece to ask any one about what is the average credentials and requirements students need for getting accepted into graduate schools? I know this is vague and all schools are different, especially with the wide variety of schools, but any information on this would be greatly appreciated!
