Lyonessrampant's Dissertation Defense

I'd be happy to participate in a forum on the job market, though I think it would probably be more useful to split at least into STEM , social sciences, and humanities like suggested above. Thanks again, all! I'm happily Dr. Lyonessrampant now -

I went on it this year. It's brutal, but we all know that. Hoping next year will be better with degree in hand, but even if I end up going alt-ac or non-ac, I've had a great experience during my Ph.D. I learned a new language, spent about a year in Italy and England, got funded to do research I love and am passionate about, and had amazing health insurance, so for me, I have zero regrets even if I don't get a TT-job. -

Thank you all so much! What a pleasant surprise it is to see this today. Old Bill, I happily pass the torch to you, as your support and encouragement of everyone over the last couple of years is evidence that you'll continue to contribute to this community. Best wishes to all. -
Uh...now what?

My husband and I bought a home. Like Tybalt says, there can be down sides (we've replaced the furnace, hot water heater, and will be doing a new roof soon), but we've saved a lot of money overall compared to renting. -
Hugs to you! I'm so sorry and hope you can find another way to do your project.

Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!

Also an alternate for the second time in a row, and I wish it would have been a rejection as well based on my waiting experience last year and the fact that I'm also applying for jobs and postdocs and things right now. I think for me, if I do get converted, I won't feel badly about it because the factors that go into the difference between Principal and Alternate are beyond your control. It doesn't mean that the Principals projects are objectively better or whatever. It means that they wanted more people working on X and you're working on Y or something like that. If you do get converted, be p

Happy to share friends Best wishes to all on negotiations and campus visits! -
Thanks! After last year, I'm not feeling very optimistic, but I appreciate the well wishes!

Just got my Italy notification as well. Also an alternate. Again. For the second year in a row. Seriously, Italy, are you just stringing me along here? Ugh. Anyway, congratulations to everyone who got good news today and hoping everyone gets answers soon!
