  1. Hi all, I'm about to be a second year student in a PhD program in anthropology at a top ranking school. My focus is in medical anthro/psych. anthro. However, after completing my first year, I feel very disillusioned with anthropology and am having some constant regrets that I didn't apply to a clinical psychology program. In terms of my background, I have my BA in psychology and an MA in social sciences, both from a top ranked school. At first I really loved the idea of the PhD in Anthropology, because I felt I could combine many of my research interests and wasn't as limited in terms of preferred methodologies as I would have been in a psych department. I do like my adviser, and in general I think I am a very open and generally supportive department. But regardless of these positive things, I really miss working directly WITH people (rather than just "studying" them) and feel clinical psychology would be a much more fulfilling career path. However, I'm having some serious concerns about leaving my program - especially since I'm fully funded for 5 years. In terms of applying for clinical psych. programs, given how low the acceptance rates are for the PhD programs and the fact that I really want to be a practitioner more than a researcher per se, I am seriously considering the Psy.D. I'm worried though about how it will look that I have left a PhD program (despite the fact that my GPA is about a 4.0/4.0). I am hoping though that my background in cultural psychology and research focus on at-risk communities will help me in the application process. If anyone has any suggestions/advice it would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Particularly any info. about how difficult it is to get accepted into PsyD programs, and which ones are supposed to be the most well respected. The only school I know for sure I would apply to as of now is the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Thank you!
  2. I can understand your comment that minds change, and sometimes after applying we realize that a certain school would not be right for one reason or another. I was recently accepted at a school, was/am really excited about the department and program, but have some concrete financial concerns due to the extremely high living costs of the city (LA), and am having some serious doubts about spending 5-6 years barely scraping by and living in a hovel - when there are other great programs in other cities that would afford much better quality of life. So, my point is, we all have our reasons for having second thoughts. That being said, it would be silly to accept an offer that you aren't truly excited about. And from everything I've gathered, it looks very bad to transfer into another PhD, and is very difficult to do. Of course, you could go for the first year, see how you like it -decide if the field is right for now- and then either stay or leave. This is a bit ethically sketchy since there are plenty of people who would love to have your spot and the school is investing in you. However, schools are well aware that they are taking gambles on people, and they will survive just fine if you decide to leave the program! Just out of curiosity, what program are you considering?
  3. Anyone who was accepted to Toronto but won't be going, PLEASE decline the offer so people can get in off the wait list!!!!! thanks!!!!
  4. i am having a similar dilemma...was accepted into a very good program where i completely clicked with the faculty and loved the department's atmosphere and research opportunities. but the city....dear lord. just sooooooooo expensive and not at all my scene. i know we will spend most of our time on campus, but still....5-6 years is a long time to live in a place i am not excited about... i don't know what to do...

    DEFERMENT

How does deferment work exactly? Help! Do some schools allow it and others not, or is always the case that you must have a very special reason in order for a school to even consider granting deferment? Thanks!!!!
  6. Hi all! I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Med Anthro program at UCSF/UCB (I got in on the UCSF side). The funding though is not good - tuition and 20k for only the first two years, and then after that we are on our own. Does anyone know how successful students are at getting external funding, and in general, how happy they are with the program? Thanks so much for any help!!!!
  7. Sorry to harp on the rejection - but what form did it take from Toronto? Postal mail? I'm still waiting too and am starting to get verrrrrrrrry frustrated! Thanks.

    Los Angeles, CA

thanks for the info! hmm...so venice is shady? then why is everything so damn expensive there!? i guess ideally i'd like a neighborhood that actually feels like a neighborhood and has a diverse crowd - preferably lacking in fake boobs. but i'll take what i can i suppose =)
  11. hmmm...i am not sure about march 1. i noticed on old gradcafe postings that someone was notified in 2006 via email on feb. 17, so i just assumed they would have sent out acceptances already. but who knows!
  12. Anyone heard from these programs yet? I think Rutgers accepts in waves, but am not sure......
