Wanna ask if anyone has heard back about their applications to Canadian universities for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (both masters or PhD)?

    Would be great if anyone can provide info about any of the following institutions;

    - University of Waterloo

    - University of Western Ontario

    - University of Calgary

    - University of Windsor

    - Saint Mary's University (in Halifax, NS)

    - University of Guelph

I heard back directly from the professor I applied to at Western (reject) - But it seems like a ton have been slow to decide. I would guess it may have to do with the pandemic making meetings and other necessities (e.g. funding package determination) take longer.

  2. Central Michigan just sent me their decision.

I mean they literally just sent it out (10 minutes ago).

    Congrats!!

I got my acceptance email yesterday too :D

Also received an acceptance email from Central Florida.

Needless to say I celebrated yesterday.

  3. There was a professor (I wish i still had the link) that was answering a similar question about whether or not a better school would provide better job opportunities.
In I/O it's more about what you know and what you do, unlike MBA and Law school where the school prestige matters, Noone really knows I/O schools all that well anyways. Take the 2014 rankings of I/O grad schools from TIP. All those schools are good schools, it doesn't work that going to the 5th ranked school will necessarily land you a better job than the 15th or 25th.

Assuming the state school is decent enough (which you can confirm by looking at the professors teaching there and their background, whether the school has alumni that are working in industry, etc.), You're better off going there and making the most out of it to get the experience and land yourself a good job in the industry.

  4. Where's everyone at in the process? I'm currently at the 'everything easy is done and now it's time to edit and perfect' portion. I have a basic SOP that is not yet edited or tailored to each school, I have a writing sample that I would like to further edit, I've asked all of my recommenders who have accepted, I have each application filled out but certainly need to check over everything, and I've sent all my GRE scores and transcripts but want to contact each school to make sure they're all in the appropriate locations with the appropriate name (I've legally changed my name and some transcripts don't reflect this).

And I'm giving myself the deadline of next week to finish.

    Applying to Masters I/O Programs

    Recommenders have all accepted.

Done my GRE and narrowed my list of schools to 7.

Working on my SOP and hope to have it done this weekend to send to some profs to look over.

I still need to write my CV though - guess that's one thing that also needs to be done before November.

That being said, i'm hoping i can get some help on my list of schools: I want to narrow down my list of 7 schools to 6. 4 i'm very interested in, which leaves 2 spots for the other 3:

    They are:

Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech)

    Missouri State University

    University of Tulsa

More specifically, I was wondering which of these do any of you know offer the best funding? I'm from Canada and so would count as an international student and I'm concerned about being able to afford going to these schools.

    Thanks for all your help!

  5. Hi,

I've been reading a lot of stuff about people currently emailing Professors of Interest (POIs). I was wondering, I'm only interested in doing a terminal masters program. For these kind of programs, do I need to still contact one of the professors and see if they're accepting students? I was kind of under the impression that is if you are doing a PhD. Or should I still contact the Prof even if I am just doing a masters?

So: Is contacting a POI necessary for Masters programs? What about for Terminal Masters Programs?

    Thanks for any help!

  6. I graduated from an I/O PhD program last year and have been working full time for 3 years, so if anybody has any questions about grad school or work I would be happy to try my best to answer them.

Good luck everyone! It looks like as I/O gets more and more popular the process is becoming much more competitive. I doubt I would be competitive with most of you today :)

    Hi!

FIrst off, thanks for being willing to answer questions for us newbies!

Secondly, I'm a Canadian student with a decent application and am really interested in doing a Masters in IO so I can go onto consulting.  I even have a list of companies i've been using as kind of my "dream companies":

    Aon Hewitt

    Hay Group

    Deloitte

    Mercer

    PriceWaterhouseCoopers

    Segal Company

    Towers Watson

    DDI

So I was wondering if you have any information on these or other IO/HR consulting firms and their hiring practices. I know that for business schools, it's important to get into a school that a company you want to work for hires from. (Ex. BCG takes heavily from Wharton). I was wondering if that's the same for IO or if  the prestige of the school matters less.

Lastly, after talking with my prof I've compiled a list of schools whose masters programs i'd be interested in applying to, also wondering if there's any schools I might be missing if my end goal is consulting:

    University of Central Florida

    Central Michigan University

    University of Akron

    University of Western Ontario

Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis

  7. Just took the GRE.  My preliminary scores were 170 V and 155 Q.  The (I/O) programs I'm looking at range in their average accepted Q scores between 152 - 158.  I am debating whether to take the GRE again.  I am thinking I could study more and possibly raise my Q score.  However, I have a timeline and there are other things I need to start focusing on this year.  I am not sure if it's realistic to devote more study hours to GRE math in the next couple months - or more to the point, how many more study hours I would need to significantly raise my score.

I have a high GPA and some good research experience, so I think the whole package will be very good overall.  Just don't want to leave any points on the table if they are worth going after.

Does anyone have any experience with increasing their Q score on a second take of the GRE?

Congrats on that Bren :) You killed that Verbal. I think that's good enough considering your other priorities if the schools you're looking at hover around there. I mean, if you were studying evenly on the quant as you did on verbal then i feel like you would need to study a lot to get a significantly better quant score. It might be more efficient at this point to focus on your other priorities since the GRE is more-or-less a beat-the-cutoff game (as i've heard).

If I can ask for my own personal understanding, What did you use to study? Kaplan? ETS? (Or both). Also, approx. how many hours/week + how many weeks were you studying for the GRE? My prof has suggested I prep 10 hrs/week for 4 months while another person said they studied 10hrs/week for 2 months. Just trying to get a gauge. thanks in advance.

  8. Hi everyone, i'm a Canadian undergrad student looking to do a Masters in IO Psychology. There's not a lot of 'good quality' IO programs that offer terminal masters in Canada and so I've been told I should look at the U.S.

My question is: Besides somehow getting the highly competitive, and very few, international scholarships, Do U.S. schools offer decent funding to students that only want to do a Masters and not a PhD?

Or, as a Canadian, will I have to commit to a 5 year PhD to get enough funding in the States?

Thanks very much in advance for any help I can get :)

  9. Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum but I hope I get to know you all and get/provide some help these next few months :)

    Profile:

Applying for I/O Psychology. Starting my last term of university in September.

    Current GPA = 3.6, 3.9 JR/SR

RA in several labs (Cumulative: 1.5 years exp), TA for 1 prof, 4 months

Currently doing Honours Thesis in I/O Psychology - Studying motivation & culture

I've been researching schools for a while & also preparing to do the GRE general in August.

I'm not sure if I will be doing the psych GRE, most schools here in Canada don't ask for it and already have a lot on my plate. Do most IO psych schools in the US want psych GRE? It looks like most of the top 10 ask for it.

    :)
