  1. Good lord. Thanks for sharing that info. It doesn't look particularly positive for us at the moment, does it? And with NOAA getting the axe such as they are, I wonder how the Nancy Foster Scholarship will be affected... Grim times, my friends. Soldier on. (Department of Defense spending is to be boosted, so soldiering may still be profitable)
  2. Aaaaand no one has any input. I've been curious about crowd-funding. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about it. Anyone have anything useful to say about this? (I clearly don't)
  3. I may be a little late to the party here, but my understanding is this: Tuition or fee waivers are considered financial aid and may affect your other financial aid options (including loans). These waivers are considered taxable, UNLESS you are receiving them in return for performing your work as a grad student at an accredited academic institution. This probably applies to most people in this forum. Money received in exchange for your services (i.e. work, including TA and RAships) is considered a wage, and does not affect your financial aid. Incidentally, this money is taxable, just like any other wages. A grad stipend (as well as scholarships and fellowships), like that typically associated with a fellowship may affect your financial aid eligibility. These funds are tax free until they exceed your educational costs. Americans, refer to your 1098-T come tax season to see how much is tax-deductible. Please correct me if I'm mistaken. I hope that was helpful.
  4. And the winners have been officially announced.
  5. And that the email was, as far as I could tell, taken verbatim from the announcement on the website. No small, personal touch for those who are left hanging for months? For shame. Seriously though, what are the chances of them pulling this off at this point? It's almost July.
  6. Wow, sounds like NSF fellows scored this year. Congratulations everyone, especially those who just got elevated from Honorable Mention to Awardee. Does anyone have any idea why NSF suddenly seems to have a surplus of money? I'm especially surprised since everybody else seems to be suffering from the sequester. An extra $2,000 for everyone (plus the retroactive increases) means they had millions extra to give.
  7. All in all, the situation is looking grim isn't it? The real question on my mind is when will our government pass a new budget? I've been disenchanted with the continuing Republican/Democrat conflict for a while, but it hasn't ever seemed to be this self-destructive before. Maybe I'm being naive or overly pessimistic here, and I'm interested to hear if people think so, but I don't think either party is going to approve a budget authored by the "other side." So what happens from here? Eternal sequestration? For those that are still unclear on what the sequester is and what it may mean for graduate students and researchers, I've compiled a fairly brief summary here. Take a look if you're interested.
  8. It kind of makes you feel bad for the people like Bronda who have to field all our questions without knowing much more than us. I suppose everyone is just waiting for word from the top. At least it seems like they won't be defunding current fellows (except they did leave a way out on that one: "subject to the availability of funds"). I know applying and having this year's program cut is painful, but imagine having the security of a 3 year fellowship pulled out from under your feet. Scary stuff.
  9. Did the results of this poll ever get published? Or are they for internal use only? I would be curious to see how the results pan out, though as some people have pointed out, the questions seem a little oversimplified.
  10. It is my understanding that people have heard, but that the results haven't been officially announced yet. I didn't get it, but I know someone who got the phone call. Not sure when they will announce this year's scholars.
  11. It sure is looking that way isn't it? I'm wondering what the future effects of the sequester will be. NSF GRFP and some of the other fellowships were still able to grant this year largely, I think, due to the fact that the sequester was implemented after they had already budgeted for the fiscal year. I wonder what budgets written with the sequester in place will look like. Oh well. I guess we'll find out next year.
  12. Does anyone know the EPA's current policy on deferring fellowships? I am imagining a scenario in which they decide to award the fellowship this year, but one's application to school this year has been denied for lack of funding. Any idea whether the fellowship could be deferred until next year?
  13. I will definitely be applying for the 2014 EPA STAR if they're still offering it. Last I had heard, the President's budget included a proposal to majorly restructure the government fellowships. These are political speculations made by a biologist, so take them with a few grains of salt, but I think the goal was to move them all to the Department of Education, thus making it appear that cuts had been made to the budgets of a variety of organizations and education funding had increased. Politically, it seems like a sly move, but I don't know how that would play out in terms of the actual granting process. Plus, I've heard Department of Education takes some serious overhead off all the money they manage (which is why administering the Nancy Foster was taken over by the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries a few years ago), leaving a lot less left to actually give to hopeful fellows. But of course, all of that relies on Obama's budget passing, which seems way unlikely. It may have even been rejected already for all I know. But remember, grains of salt.
