Has anyone called Penn to confirm that all offers and WL are out?
-
I understand. I feel the same way. You aren't alone.

He still could have been their POI....but yes, I'm starting to think they are fake as well.
-
not his top choice? def fake
-
Sure, I don't disagree with any of that.

He did consider that, and he said that based on his evidence, the best explanation of their success is not something philosophical. Maybe he is wrong, but he definitely took the time to address that possibility. Predominantly white and male certainly, but not 90%. In fact, some PhD programs have a target ratio of 50/50. And given this, one could certainly see how an otherwise less qualified female identifying applicant could slip past some otherwise better qualified male identifying applicants. Many female applicants are imminently well-qualified. But are all female applicants that beat out male applicants for spots head to head stronger? No. Is it a good thing to implement policy that will rectify gender imbalances in the discipline? Sure. But do these policies actively discriminate against males? Yes.

How are you all staying productive while you wait?

I read Leiter of course, but my favorite blog is Philosopher's Cocoon. I also check in with Daily Nous, Philosophy Smoker and the meta blogs. -
I applied to 9, out at 3, no news from the other 6. This is my second time applying. I'm definitely thinking about non-academic jobs, or at least peripherally academic jobs.
-
Weird, I got an email. At 2:00 am too. Anyway, I'm 0a/0w/3r of 9 now...Two weren't my best fits and one was the highest ranked I applied to....but I'm still getting that feeling that I'm trapped in a trash compactor and the walls are closing in and there's some sort of snake monster rubbing against my legs underwater.
-
Seems like a really good sign to me. They obviously are taking your application seriously.

I'm sure there's some pattern that explains why we haven't received calls yet. Something about the position of the moon and the sun I think.
-
Good luck! My last name starts with a letter near the end of the alphabet, so I assume that's why I haven't heard yet
-
I want to, but I can't, because it wasn't mine.

I'd guess more Virginia admits, WashU and maybe UNC. Maybe one or two other schools. UCSD? Wisconsin? Oregon?
-
I'd think the opposite. It would confirm their decision that you are a good person to admit, since it would show other committees reached the same decision about your file as they did. So if anything it would just make them more confident. But that's just my two cents.

I had a beagle for a long time! Best kind of dog you could have! Sundays are the hardest, since historically they are the least like day a school could release. At least today is the Super Bowl...This week I'm hoping for UNC, UCSD, Virginia and Brown, based on the predictions But I am also teaching, taking two classes and finishing up my thesis, so I have other things to (try) to think about. Good luck everybody! -
Some folks applying to terminal MAs may find this article interesting: http://philosopherscocoon.typepad.com/blog/2016/01/what-it-is-like-to-be-at-a-terminal-ma-program.html

I hope tomorrow is just wild. Berkeley, UNC, Chicago, UCI, Vandy and WashU.
-
I was accepted first round in 2014 and I was notified Feb 25.
-
Happy February y'all. Hopefully the month we've all been waiting for. May the force be with us all.

Interviews are not common. Note that the Michigan posts are for Classics/Ancient, not Philosophy proper.

Anyone want to claim the Ohio State admit?
-
I'll be teaching and writing my MA thesis, and I'm weirdly zen about my applications. It's really only a month or less until places start releasing acceptances. I can handle that.
-
I suspect the person who told you to resubmit the scores had no clue that they cost $27 each. I think any department code will be fine as long as you get the university right.

All I want for Christmas is a PhD admission!
