  1. I don't disagree. What I'm talking about is like an analysis of a historical writer like Kant, Nietzsche, Hegel, Heidegger etc.
  2. It's deader than God. :<
  3. What's that? Is it that results website? I'm not a big fan at all of history of philosophy tbh. I don't wanna offend anyone but I personally don't find it very fulfilling.
  4. It depresses me that as far as I can see, including myself, there's only two people doing samples that keep up with the more recent developments in analytic philosophy (philosophy of language, possible worlds, formal semantics etc.).
  5. One person's scores don't change that. I like what someone in the comments in the link I provided said:
  6. Holy crap. You guys might wanna read this: http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2011/03/are-some-schools-using-undisclosed-gre-cut-offs-in-admissions-decisions.html
  7. This makes me a little suspicious already. This is well below the cutoffs for the top programs, I think. Though someone who knows how the admissions process works would be more helpful.
  8. Locker? I doubt they'll have a locker here where I live. I hope they'll give us scrap paper here. I doubt I'll pass the quantitative section without it. Ok then, so my ID, a piece of paper, 2 pencils, a sharpener and an eraser. And I have to leave my watch elsewhere I think.
  9. This is for the GRE. What do I have to bring to the exam center apart from my ID? Do I need to bring the exam receipt or anything like that? Also, what are you allowed to bring? Can you bring candy, drinks and a pencil?
  10. Hmm, one of my profs graduated recently from there and he didn't have that impression. Regardless, I go to a school which is much stronger in linguistics than in philosophy, so I probably have a much better chance in getting into a linguistics program. Though, by the time I graduate I'll have taken around 12 grad level philosophy classes compared to 4 linguistics ones. I'm paranoid. I can PM a summary if you're interested though.
  11. My dream is MIT linguistics, which is combined with the philosophy department. ' Maybe I should get into the details of my honors thesis a little bit more. There's a phenomenon known as "breaking the fourth wall." I use sentences of that kind to reject every view that Millians come up with for fictional discourse. I don't wanna get into the details here though, because I'm scared of plagiarism. :<
  12. Nevermind, ignore this post, I misread.
  13. Don't listen to this guy. If you apply this fall, you won't even know your grades till after you apply. So it'll be pointless if you don't get straight As. Just wait a year, maybe get an internship or something. Your GPA is horrific to be honest.
  14. Yes, I agree, like I said in the above post. I wonder who I should ask to read over my SOP. I guess I'll go with Cable, since he went to grad school relatively recently.
  15. To be fair, I don't know what I want to write yet, either, and I think that'll take a month or two. I fail so much at Word that I can't even figure out how to make page numbers start from page 3 in my honors thesis. :<
  16. Does anyone else think that both Q and V are by far harder than the practice tests in the ETS book? My Q score went down from 168 and 170 to 158 when I took the Manhattan practice test.
  17. I'm surprised it even takes that long. With an outline fully planned out in my head it would take me a few hours at most.
  18. Yes, I am using Word. I'm not very computer savvy lol. I doubt I can do all that so I'd have to change it manually. :<
  19. Ok, I'll keep the 6-8 week notice in mind. I've never seen a Dec 1 deadline, but I should keep my eyes open for that. Thanks. I'm doing an honors thesis in philosophy (it's very related to linguistics and the internalism vs externalism debate) so I think it'll be in Chicago citation style. Would that be appropriate?
  20. Hmm, but if the deadline is January 1 or December 31, is November 1 really that late? 2 months at most (and the letters can be sent later than the deadline) seems like a decent amount of time. Sorry, I'm not too good at this. :< I doubt it'll get that far single spaced. Thanks for the tip though. It'll probably only get to 30-40 pages double spaced.
  21. Would it be okay if I waited until the very start of November to ask for letters? I want to wait and get to know one of my professors this semester that I haven't taken a class with before. Also, how does the writing sample have to be formatted? Any suggested citation style or should I just submit whatever I submitted as my honors thesis? And thanks. Sorry for all the questions. :<
  22. That's not the argument I'm trying to make. I'm blaming the US rather than anyone in particular. The United States, as a modern Western country, should try to emulate other Western countries in this regard. There's no excuse for the insanely high costs of education.
  23. Hi guys, I was wondering about your experiences in the grad admission process. I don't really know much about applying so feel free to correct me. When is the ideal time to do the following: 1. Apply. Just fill in and send the standard application I guess. 2. Write/send the writing sample. Is this a part of the main application? I have a really interesting topic fully planned out for my honors thesis about fictional characters this semester, but should I write in the next couple weeks or can I wait a while? My honors thesis is supposed to be a semester long 6 credit thing next semester that's going to be graded and such by mid December, though I should have the final draft significantly earlier if the professors give comments. 3. Write/send the statement of purpose. Is this a part of the main application? 4. Ask for LORs. 5. Have professors send the LORs by. 6. Send the official transcripts. I want to wait until mid December for all my grades to be out. 7. Send the GRE score report thingy? What is it called?
  24. This isn't really that impressive considering education is free, or nearly so, in a lot of countries.
  25. An original objection to Millianism based on the ontology of fictional objects.
