Writing a statement of purpose in linguistics
aojfifjoaisjaiosdj replied to aojfifjoaisjaiosdj's topic in Linguistics Forum
Ok, I'm sure I can find plenty of good reasons for each school eventually. I guess I should also talk about certain faculty members and their research too. Thank you so much :< I'm so ignorant. -
Writing a statement of purpose in linguistics

Wow Thank you. Just one question: First, you sound like a graduate program director. It's quite funny. How important is this? It's easy enough for Harvard and stuff (I'll just ask my graduate program director here for help if I can't think of anything) but I'm planning to apply to a few safety schools, like Boston University and stuff, and I have nothing good to say about them apart from the fact that they're safety schools and I want to live in Boston with a decent stipend. I guess I need to do some research on their faculty? Whoops, Boston University only has an applied linguistics program. But you get the idea anyway. What would I say for somewhere like MIT? I can't think of anything other than it has a lot of semanticists and its philosophy department and linguistics department are combined, so it'd be a good place for me to develop both philosophically and linguistically. -
I don't know if you can afford to be too picky with your interests in mind.

It's vague on purpose because it's impossible to give a definition of it. There are so many possible things that may be considered significant. Here's an example from the NYU website: http://linguistics.as.nyu.edu/object/linguistics.grad.faq

It's fine to reapply as long as there's a significant change in your application.

No need to rush at all. I appreciate that you're taking your time for this anyway. -

Excellent. Thank you. (Fuzzy, would it be annoying of me to ask you to do the second part some time in the future? I like your posts.) -
Writing a statement of purpose in linguistics
aojfifjoaisjaiosdj replied to aojfifjoaisjaiosdj's topic in Linguistics Forum
Ah, I was replying to the bit about writing on dissertation topics in the statement of purpose. I meant to say I doubt my opinions on internalism and such will change at grad school. So I think it might be fine to talk about possible dissertation topics. You seem to have thought that I was replying to the phonology stuff? The only thing I know about phonology is from intro to linguistics, so yeah, you're right about that. I'll be quiet about that and maybe I'll enjoy it in the future. -
Writing a statement of purpose in linguistics
aojfifjoaisjaiosdj replied to aojfifjoaisjaiosdj's topic in Linguistics Forum
I've taken a lot of graduate-level courses (by the time I graduate, I'll have taken all the first year PhD courses in syntax and semantics here, the first and second semester ones for first year PhD students, and around 10 graduate-level courses in philosophy), so I think it's unlikely my opinion will change that much when I go to grad school. So this makes me think that it might not be too soon at all to talk about it. But I'll keep this in mind for when I talk to professors about this as well. Thank you so much for your advice. -
Writing a statement of purpose in linguistics
aojfifjoaisjaiosdj posted a topic in Linguistics Forum
Hi everyone. I wanted to have some opinions on this before showing my statement of purpose to a couple professors. I was just wondering what an outline of a statement of purpose should look like. For example: 1. How long should it be? 2. How should it be structured? (a paragraph for an intro, a paragraph for interests in semantics, for research interests, etc.) 3. How much should I talk about interests on the side? I'm pretty interested in logic, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and cognitive science so I want to take courses on those too. 4. Does the statement of purpose have to be customized for each school? I'd rather not do this if possible. 5. Should I mention my goals for a dissertation? 6. Is it bad that I have zero interest in phonology? I despise it. Should I write about it? Here's my outline: Intro: Mentioning main areas of interest (philosophy of language and semantics for me). Body 1: Summarizing previous research in philosophy of language & outline my goal for a dissertation (to build an truth-conditional theory of meaning based on mental representations rather than external-world referents) Body 2: Potential other research interests in semantics Body 3: Potential research interests in syntax Body 4: Some research interests on the side (what I mentioned earlier) Conclusion: I'm not sure what to say here lol. Maybe I won't put a conclusion. Thanks for reading. -
Looks like a troll thread lol.

Yep. My advisor in the philosophy department told me this.

Did not send my scores after the GRE test?
aojfifjoaisjaiosdj replied to parmeet94's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
I have a question about this. I didn't send this on test day either. Do I have to pay now for 4 schools? I haven't even decided the unis I'm gonna apply to for certain yet, nor have I applied. Pretty freaking ridiculous if this is the case. -
Turning down Oxford (and scholarship) for a job...?

And a PhD from OXFORD. Is a small amount of extra money really this big of a deal to you guys? That PhD could help him get better jobs in the future. -

Why are you bringing up glamor? Nor is this: "However, the other day I got a job offer. It's not a ton of money, but it is a great opportunity to work on some of the things I'd be studying first hand and it does seem to offer the possibility to advance fairly quickly." I'd say getting a PhD from Oxford is pretty freaking glamorous. -

It would be completely moronic to turn down Oxford with a scholarship, imo. You're going to regret it for the rest of your life if you do. -

I have the GRE in a few hours and I have a question. If I have to pee during the 10 minute break, do I need to ask for permission? Can I just leave the room without talking to anyone? -
top philosophy program interrogation list

Oh, we're also much stronger in philosophy of language recently. We have our own Frege expert, Kevin, along with others proficient in philosophy of language and logic. -

UMass: strong faculty in metaphysics, philosophy of mind, gender studies and epistemology. Has almost no resources unfortunately. No air conditioning or TV or stuff like that. Tiny library. You should see how crappy our building is. :< But we're moving in 2016 I think. -

what are your writing sample topics?

What are the hot topics? I'm not applying to any philosophy programs but I can't help but be curious. -

aojfifjoaisjaiosdj replied to kysorkhabi's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Your scores are good especially considering you're from Iran. Also if I recall correctly, schools get your GRE essays when you send it to them. You can explain you wrote it on the wrong page or something.
