Well, I don't even mean the nature of our projects. Can you imagine the logistics of connecting the some odd 2000 students that are awarded each year with their respective countries? Not to mention the 4000 applications that actually get sent out around the world. Each country has its own regulations for research, teaching, admission, you name it. Fulbright has to wait on those countries to go through their own political red tape before they can start to muddle through the next section of the US red tape. Try to look at the big picture and the giant machine that is this process. You are but one small application waiting for the gears to grind to the right spot for your card to get punched and processed. I think that the generation that grew up with instant communication is finding it more and more difficult to grasp these sorts of realities. I remember when a pager was the only way to get ahold of someone away from the house - and it was glorious because I could ignore a page. As far as your own worries are concerned - you gotta let it go. What's done is done. You clearly did a great job because you got a recommendation! Ruminating on the "should haves" will only serve to spiral you into a place that will not help you. Think about the great thing you DID accomplish and be happy about that.

Just remember everyone, that Fulbright CARES about us. It seems like the process takes forever, but dealing with each country's politics and regulations is no easy feat. I promise they are not sitting around laughing maniacally. It IS tough to wait, but find things to occupy your mind and remember that no matter what the decision, every cloud has a silver lining.

I won't be in the country until October. I will spend the first two weeks on Java, near Jakarta and the rest of the time be in the jungles of NE Sulawesi. I think they might do group US Fulbrighter things some time so we will hopefully get a chance to meet!

Congrats!!! When are you leaving for Indonesia and what island will you be on? We should keep in touch

You never know =) Good luck with both! From what I hear, getting through round one of Wenner Gren is very impressive.

Bio Anth - DDIG (sorry for not clarifying - my post was right above this one so....) My status just updated today, officially declined. I am absolutely not concerned about this, it was my first submittal. I can't wait to read their feedback so I can try again in the summer. If I am lucky with all the rest of my funding, then it can be a supplemental to enhance my lab work next year. Good luck to everyone else! PS - my feedback was VERY helpful. All in all - everyone liked my project! I have some great ideas on how to improve now.

Mine says the same thing and I agree with your assessment. Although I did not expect to get it this round, I just wanted the editorial suggestions. So a rejection would not actually hurt. I suppose it helps that I was awarded a Fulbright Fellow.

My POI did not know until I told her. I don't think they find out first...

Hey everyone. So I think that from past years, not everyone gets the (P), (A), or (NS). It might be country or region specific. Thank you for all the congrats! As for who I contacted. I sent an email to Johnathon Akeley, the program coordinator for SE Asia. His email is on the Fulbright website. Good Luck to all of you! I am so sorry that you guys all still have to wait. I know it can be excruciating. I actually still need 15k in grant money to finish supporting my research, all those notifications roll in sometime in the next 3 weeks - 3 months. Sheesh.
-
Awww - thank you that is really very sweet! I hope you hear soon!! Because everyone always asks, here was my subject line: "Fulbright Application Status (P)"
-
Even though I called and they verified my correct email - they sent the notification to my personal one instead? I emailed the PC directly and he responded within 30 minutes by resending the email. At any rate - I am in!! Full Research Grant. Indonesia, here I come!
-
Thank you so much for posting.

Thank you for posting! I thought I was the only one. Solidarity.

Just for any other Indonesian people out there - we have not all been notified. My FA knows nothing either. I guess for us the wait continues.
-
I just called Fulbright and was told that "She does not show that any Indonesian acceptance or rejection emails have been sent". Maybe not everything is visible to her though, I left a message on the PC's voicemail. (I believe you Frogism)
-
I was worried that I have not heard anything, but the form shows your acceptance and someone else's rejection. I wonder how long I should wait.. What was your email subject?
-
How did you find out? Can you post more details please?
-
We all just have to keep waiting. I promise that if Indonesia is the first out the gate again, you guys will all know immediately.

Unreasonable decisions and lack of transparency

This was a hilarious distraction, thanks. -
I sent mine via Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. I saw that it was delivered successfully a few days later.

Taking Comprehensive Exams...

Very wise - we did the same with our first round of exams. Good Luck! -
Taking Comprehensive Exams...
Secret_Ninja replied to Nrrrdgrrrl's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
We had two rounds of these. The first gave us 6 questions, and we had to write essay answers for four of them. We had 4 hours total to do this (all of us were in one room). We were expected to write at least 4 pages on each question, by hand (using those blue books). I cranked out 24 pages total. They expect extremely thorough responses. This happened at the end of our 2nd semester. Then, once you have your dissertation plan ready, they give you 3 paper topics for your advanced exams. First is theory, second is method, and finally an NSF style dissertation proposal. We have months to prepare for these, though we don't know exactly what will be asked, you have an idea. Once it's time to write, the process takes 3 weeks. 5 days for each question. They limit you to only 20 pages, so you have to be concise, but thorough. A few weeks later we defend these orally. I found that as long as you prepare, you will be surprised what you can crank out in 4 hours. Just make sure that you are organized and that you have been reading over the relevant papers so that you can reference them quickly. Most writing time is spent researching - you want to get all that out of the way beforehand if you can. -
Another fun question - You are not allowed to use any grants that match the benefits that Fulbright provides. In some areas this is clear (i.e. travel, medical, personal subsistence) - but does this extend to subsistence for any local assistants that you will be hiring? (I am required to pay lodging/food/salary for local assistants). What about specific supplies needed for data collection? Or lab fees? This questions concerns the Full Research grant for the US Student program. I would ask in the oder Fulbright forum, but it's a bit dead... Maybe someone here has already asked? Thanks!

For those who have been recommended AND have an FPA in the loop - any way to find out our chances? I know we can look at the stats page for prior years, and I know they usually send x1.5-2 of the number of grants available to the home country, BUT does anyone ever find out more details than that before the results come out?
