It's been so much fun! I love it here!
-
I'm there right now (just got here today, a few hours ago actually) and even though it's raining, I LOVE IT!
-
^I'm not in the same boat, but my impression is that they prepare you for different things. Berkeley seems more of a stepping stone to a PhD, whereas Georgetown also includes functional training. So I guess it depends more on what you wanna do with the degree.

^I think that's something you're going to have to work out with your program. I'm not sure that you can apply independently; I think FLAS are given to schools who then distribute them accordingly. Our programs are mostly at top institutions because while a lot of places have Asian Studies, some of the subfields we're interested in are pretty specific and are only available at certain places. I guess these tend to be the top places who have the financial resources to support such programs. And that's when things come down to fit with the specific program. At least, that's what I think. Would anyone be willing to help take a look at my FLAS statement of purpose? O:) I'd really appreciate it!

Hey, would anyone be willing to critique my FLAS application essay? I've never written one or seen what a good one looks like before and would appreciate some feedback! =]

Hello all, I was thrilled to have been accepted to a very good program for an MA, but unfortunately it was unfunded and I will have to apply for external funding through FLAS. Online, I have tried to find sample statements of purposes for FLAS but have not found any, or at least none that I thought were good. Would someone be willing to help me look it over / critique it? Thanks!

How to Start a SOP

One of mine just started with: "I am attracted to XYZ program for its (then I listed three characteristics). After XYZ program, I intend to receive training in (related) field, and then work for international affairs in this area one day." I got accepted to this program. -
Hi there! Where else are you waiting on? I really hope to get to meet you come fall Yes, I am for sure going! Sent in my deposit a few days ago and will be going to the open house next week.

Is there any point in doing a PhD if...

Got into Georgetown for their Masters in Asian Studies and plan to go! -
Someone should make a google doc for all the East Asian specialists so we can list where we got in and where we're going and stuff, and perhaps even network with people who are in our programs!

Hello everyone! I found out recently that I was admitted to Georgetown in the School of Foreign Service for a masters! SUPER STOKED! Anyone else going? HOYA SAXA!
-
Dang, Yale said no for me as well. To be honest, I'm quite relieved. Look on the bright side, I have GTown (which I am so excited and happy about!) and now I don't have to choose between anywhere! ^__^ HOYA SAXA, BABY!!! kindkw congrats on UCLA!
-
^Interesting that of all the places you've heard back from so far, the only place you got into was Stanford XD. Congrats on getting in!
-
^looks like you've had some pretty good results so far. Where on the website? Do you have a link? Maybe my result is up but they haven't notified applicants via email yet
-
Woah woah woah.... Yale is starting to send out admissions??? How come I didn't get anything yet, grrrr. gimmethatfunding, I am Korea focused and will likely be attending Georgetown.
-
Everything was sent via email for me. Unfortunately, I got denied from both Duke and Stanford today. But hey, I got into Georgetown, and Georgetown is no consolation prize ! Congrats Saltome! Do you think you might go there? And same, I'm waiting on Yale and Harvard, although I'm probably not going to go to either one even if they take me.

Duke and Stanford released decisions today.
-
^ and Duke too, well for me at least. Those are the four I have left to hear from.

ragunz, congrats on MAPSS! By the looks of it, I would suggest you go to UIUC. UIUC is a great school, and masters programs are very expensive. I don't know what you want to do in the future, but if you want to go into academia, the TA experience would also help you at UIUC. Do you want to do Korean history? Could you explore Korean history through an anthropological lens? If so, I would still consider UIUC. Bruce Cumings is good, and I've gone to a few of his lectures and sat in on a few classes and he is pretty famous (but don't forget, also a little controversial...) but I don't think it's worth choosing a program based on him alone. Ahh unfortunately, the people I know in MAPSS largely don't really do Korean anything and they don't have him as an advisor. Sorry! Let me know what you decide!
-
UCLA just sent me their decision... rejected! But no big deal! Already got into GTown
-
mungosabe: Check your inbox I sent you a message! Maybe we'll be cohort mates at GTown!

Those scores look good to me! You probably don't need to retake it. Even for native speakers, for people applying to masters in comp sci, a 155 V will pose little problems. Your Q is probably on the lower side for CS at top departments, but certainly within the realm of possibility. Retake it if you think you can do better, but remember that GRE scores are the least important component of your application. If you have the time and money and think you can do better, go for it. If not, don't sweat it!

OMG JUST GOT INTO GEORGETOWN!!!! TOTALLY DID NOT EXPECT THAT ONE TODAY! Yay!
-
I'm surprised that so many people seem to be getting rejected... it was my impression that masters programs were generally not that selective and UCLA had a relatively high acceptance rate... Sorry to hear that you were rejected, drfuzz!

HAHAHA truer words have not been spoken!
