I hope your "highest grade possible" has renewed your strength in your ability to quell those demons who tell you "you were just not born with the mental hardware capable of keeping up with everyone else. There is nothing you can ever do to perform as well as your peers." You are awesome and that grade is just some measurable proof of your awesomeness lol Good luck with everything.

@AllThatJazz that is very good to know! Gives me hope, thank you!

I'm not sure if its a benchmark per se but some (I/O) PhD programs state their preference for applicants to have GRE's at or above 308 which corresponds to 1200 on the old scale. So, it could be used to weed applicants out early in the admissions process just like a low GPA could.

I am so happy you started this thread. 306 GRE, 3.56 uGPA and 3.88 j/s year gpa. I'm hoping that my GRE score doesn't keep me from a PhD in I/O psychology with funding as well!!!

I appreciate the advice everyone has shared and I definitely learned from this experience. I wish you all good luck on your applications and I've decided to apply for the Ford Foundation fellowship since it's goals are aligned with my future research goals. But apps are due today by 5:00pm! Again, thank you all for the great advice!

No, she sent me an email at 8:18 saying she did not know of the extension. If she was aware of the original deadline (email from me and nsf was sent to her)but did not submit it by then she either was never going to submit it or she knew of the extension. I did my homors thesis with her and she edited my essays for me! Said she emailed nsf I told her don't bother. Am I allowed to let her know how I feel? Is that unprofessional?

I just sent it and I hope she comes through. I'm a little surprised she would wait to the last minute as she writes grants for our college all the time. Nevertheless, thank you for your advice. I was freaking-the-%&$#-out!!

Thank you Eco Oakgirl. How did you word yours? The last reminder I sent her said," Hello Dr. X the deadline for the NSF grfp is this upcoming Thursday Nov, 14th at 8:00pm. Please let me know if there is anything else you need from me. Again, thank you for the letter and I look forward to hearing from you soon." Would you recommend sending the same note?

So, its around 4 hours before the deadline of the extension for reference letter writers and one of my recommenders has yet to submit her letter! What should I do? I contacted her last week before the original deadline and she said,"its on my calendar--good luck!" and today....nothing. Any ideas????

Hello all, If you have reference letter writers who still have not submitted their letters how would you remind them gently while letting them know to get it done! lol

@Pinkster12 Do you mean is the University of Pitt dangerous? ghetto: a section of a city, especially a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or otherminority group, often as a result of social or economicrestrictions, pressures, or hardships. dangerous: full of danger or risk; causing danger; perilous; risky;hazardous; unsafe. It would be easier to answer your question if you clarified what you meant. Crime statistics are reported for nearly every area.

So, is it necessary to put your name and keywords at the top of the research proposal? And is it necessary to put your name at the top of the personal statement combined essay?

Hello everyone! I'm applying to 4 PhD programs and 1 MS. I'm hoping to submit all my application materials this Friday. I fear the longer I hold onto my statements, the more I'll imagine that something is wrong with them Good luck everyone!!

Hello All, I'm in the process of completing UGA's supplemental application for psychology and I have two questions. The program descriptions for Clinical psychology and Behavioral and Brain Sciences explicitly state that pages beyond number 1 have to be completed but the program description for Industrial-Organizational psychology does not state either way. It does however say that an additional essay is required. Do we need to complete pages 2 or 3? The aforementioned essay, is this double spaced? single spaced? In doubt I would normally assume double spaced but my essay goes beyond the one page limit when double spaced so I'm hoping it doesn't matter. I was hoping that a previous applicant or graduate student at the University of Georgia's I/O program would be able to let me know! This is my top choice! Thank you!

Hello everyone, I have 6 citations for my proposed research essay and they are taking up too much space! I noticed that some past winners have used an abbreviated version of the ACS (American Chemical Society i believe). Psychology is my discipline so I would like to know would this format be allowed? If not are there any abbreviated formats that would be permitted? Thank you all for your time.

Help, what are my IV/DV and what tests should i use.
PhDplease! replied to altboy2011's topic in Psychology Forum
"So, i am doing a study. I don’t want to post up to much information, but i am getting confused about what my IV & DV are and what tests i should use. If you can read below and offer some suggestions i would be greatly appreciate for the help. I just want to confirm IV/DV and what tests I should do, but other advice on papers etc is welcome." If this is truly your research you would know what you IV's are as well as your DV's because you've done research in investigating the relationships between your proposed variables as well as your outcome variable. This is why it appears to be a homework problem. -
Q1. Are GRE scores required for the GRFP application? A. No, GRE scores are not part of the GRFP application, and are not accepted for this year’s competition.
-
Does this mean that the application season for 2013-2014 is halted? Will we not be able to submit our applications?

Thank you! I was actually going to apply to Purdue but now, you've saved me money!

I have a question about how many programs I/O applicants are applying to. With the potentially accumulating costs of application fees, GRE report fees and transcript fees how do you make a final determination on the schools you will and will not apply to when considering the financial aspect of applying. Do you look at fit, location etc.. to make the final determination if funds to apply for programs are limited. Thanks

Hello everyone, I'm graduating at the end of fall semester. I intended to graduate with a Bachelors of Science with an I/O concentration. My advisers just informed me a week before fall semester starts that I need to register for a class which is already closed. I could 1:wait to see if someone drops the course at which time I would be behind in the material, 2: take a class that is a step above the required course or 3: forgo the I/O concentration and graduate with just a BS in Psychology. I want the concentration designation on my transcript to boost my chances of being accepted into an I/O PhD program, that's all. I've taken all but the one computer science course required to fulfill the concentration. So I guess my question to you all is do you think having the concentration designation matters more than taking the classes that would satisfy the concentration? Any advice welcome..Thanks

Finding "matching schools" first? Do I stand a chance?
PhDplease! replied to mess's topic in Psychology Forum
I agree with PsychGirl and NicholasCage, I too am a little nervous about my chances of being accepted because of my stats. I believe a good approach would be to first find schools that you have the best fit with, regardless of the "caliber" of students they usually admit. I would then use other important criteria to narrow my list such as funding availability, work done at the institution and environment. I would compare my stats with previous classes only as the final criterion because if the fit is amazing and an applicant has the ability to succeed an admissions committee would do themselves a disservice if they do not consider that student. Granted stats are used to predict ability, but experiences can also lead to valid conclusions about ability such as research experiences, letters from references and internships.
