INFJ here! There was one point where I questioned whether SLP was the right profession for me because of my introversion, but over time I started to realize that introverts have a unique set of strengths that can actually benefit their clients and coworkers. Even though I am an introvert, I think this field suits me perfectly. I took the StrengthsQuest personality test a few years ago and my strengths were found to be the following: empathy, relator (forming deep relationships), restorative (problem-solving), individualization (observing others' strengths), and achiever. My strengths definitely complement a career in SLP. You can read about the traits and take the test here. Also, I think most online forums tend to attract introverts, so that might explain why the results show a greater number of introverts here, lol. These posts from another SLP community I follow may be helpful because they have a lot of responses from SLPs working in the field: one, two, three

I agree with the poster above! Do not make the focus of your essay be your low GPA. Instead, highlight all of the positive qualities you have and, if you feel it is necessary, briefly mention/explain your GPA with 1 or 2 sentences.

I highly recommend that you check out http://gre.magoosh.com! Even if you don't buy their service (which I would recommend... plus it's on sale right now), you should check out their GRE blog because it has tons of tips and even study plans. I only memorized around 400 words (using a phone app called quizlet) and I wish that I had memorized more. That is absolutely essential to do well on the verbal part (unless you already have a very advanced vocabulary full of obscure words that nobody knows, lol).

Supplies for SLP Graduate School
SLPamy replied to lgwslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I will definitely be investing in a rolling backpack - my shoulders/back/neck were so screwed up from lugging around my papers/laptop in tote bags during undergrad. I will probably be getting this JanSport one. I would love to get a new laptop, but I just don't know if that is a wise financial decision since I'm already pretty broke! I am one of those students who does absolutely everything on their laptop. I have a 5-year-old Vaio. I use Microsoft OneNote to take notes and I could not recommend it enough! I love having all of my notes in one place, and I love being able to quickly search through all of my notes for phrases/words. It has been so helpful. I don't think that OneNote is compatible with Macs (although it might be?) and for that reason alone I would stick with a PC. This may sound weird, but recently I've been going to estate sales and I've been finding tons of unused/unopened craft supplies for dirt cheap. I have a nice little collection going, haha. I will also be buying a lot of my apartment stuff (appliances, cookware, decor) from estate sales to keep costs low. If you're poor like me, I would definitely look into those lol. -
I heard back from my final school! It is such a relief to know that the waiting game is finally over!! Once I get funding info from IU, I really think I'll be able to start making the big decision. Right now I'm still so unsure about where I want to go. My dream location, dream price tag, and dream program do not at all match up! Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back from schools!!

Northwestern University Admissions

I was accepted and I am also on the wait list for a scholarship. It's honestly just too much money for me to justify going without a scholarship, so I will likely be declining. -
Reviewing old material before starting grad school
SLPamy replied to Papaya91's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I've heard current students say the only thing they would recommend reviewing before graduate school is transcription. I actually never learned narrow transcription in my phonetics course, so I think that I am going to try to teach myself that. Other than that, I'll probably look over my old notes from a few classes, too. I graduated in December so I'm worried about becoming a little rusty by next fall. I'm also going to start reviewing/practicing Spanish a lot more. -
The results page says they'll send it by e-mail and/or mail on Monday

First of all, I am so sorry that happened to you. Online classes are tricky in that way. I have made a similar mistake in the past (forgot to start a huge project until after it was already due), but luckily it was just for an online art gen ed. I think that you will be fine. I remember my teachers recommending that students take difficult coursework during their final spring semester so that if they got a bad grade (I'm assuming a B or C), it wouldn't affect admissions decisions. If you do get a C, I think that I would just explain the situation when you send your transcripts to them and say that you will retake the course in the summer if necessary.

Congrats!!! Congratulations!!! Getting that first acceptance is such a relief! Congratulations on making your decision!! I am so jealous of people who know exactly where they want to go... I'm still so conflicted!

This is definitely the best attitude to have! This entire process is so exhausting and draining and it can really cause you to doubt yourself and your abilities. The trick is to stay positive. I have a feel this will be *the* week for a lot of people who have been waiting to hear back. I wish you the best of luck!!

I'm so sorry but I don't see your name I don't know if it is the complete wait list - I can just see the names of everyone who received the e-mail. It was sent to 30 people.
-
Thank you! I don't know how I missed this.
-
Thank you _fairydust! I was definitely so surprised and relieved and thankful!

Is it correct that PSU's target class size is 50? I have that written down in my notes, but now I can't find that information on their website.

I just posted this on the results page, buuuuuuuut..... this morning I got an e-mail from UNC apologizing for a mistake they made in an e-mail they sent earlier this week (they listed the names of everyone who was wait-listed). I was so confused because I had never received this e-mail - or any e-mail - from UNC. I decided to go check my spam folder and there it was! I can't believe it went to my spam folder. After thinking I was rejected (because I hadn't heard anything), I am so happy to be on the wait list! If you guys haven't heard anything from a school, check your spam folders!!! Congrats artsyrunnergirl and others who got into Vandy! What an accomplishment! Sayjo - The universe must want to keep you in the Midwest too! It's much easier to swallow a rejection when you've already been accepted to some amazing programs. Plus, I'm sure you will have more good news coming from your remaining schools!

I woke up to a notification of acceptance from Portland State University! I'm so excited to have one out-of-region option! I might try to do a visit/vacation now that I know I'm in. Does anyone know anything about how PSU does funding?
-
From your earlier comments it sounds like UT-Austin wasn't going to be the right school for you anyways - I don't think it would have been for me, either. You sound like an amazing applicant, and I'm sure other admissions committees will see that! Good luck on your other schools!!!
-
Congrats autismadvocate!!! I can't say I'm surprised with your amazing stats!!! To all those who were waitlisted or accepted today.... Congrats!!! I'm at the point where I'm so OVER this process, I just want to know all of the decisions so that I can move on and figure out where I'm going to go! I'm sure you all can relate!

I'm kind of wondering if they decided to interview more students who didn't do their undergrad or post-bacc at Elmhurst, just to diversify. It's just a theory though, I really have no clue! They told us they would likely send decisions out on Friday, so if they're doing it via mail, they might not arrive until next week. But that might be delayed since they're doing new interviews. Hopefully we'll hear something soon!
-
Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear that you're feeling better too <3 It really helps to see so many other amazing applicants in the same situation. Every school is looking for something else, and we just cannot take rejections personally (even though it totally feels that way at first). I firmly believe that we will all end up in the schools that will provide us the best possible experience. I can't wait to see where you will end up! But it's so dang COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Haha

Job possibilities with a degree in SLP
SLPamy replied to a.m.20's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I keep going back and forth too! That's what is so exciting about this field. I would recommend shadowing SLPs in different settings/working with different populations. That might give you some more insight, as well. -
I was also rejected from UT-Austin this morning. Even though I was kind of expecting it, it still isn't fun. I probably wouldn't have gone there anyways, so I'm trying not to get too down about it. I'm also expecting to get a rejection from UNC-Chapel Hill (acceptances and waitlistings have already gone out). Clearly, the universe wants me to stay in the Midwest, lol.

LOL Good to know I'm not the only one! I think I might go that route too. -
Application Anxiety Thread
SLPamy replied to autismadvocate's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thoughts on what would be appropriate dress for attending an open house for admitted students? I know the safe route would be dress pants, flats, blouse, blazer/cardigan, butttttttt since it's going to be freezing/possibly snowing I really want to wear black leggings or black jeans with nice boots. Do you think that would be okay? /over-analyzes everything
