  1. What I did to explain my low GPA: Though I struggled in my first year, for the last 60 credits of my bachelor’s, my GPA will be between a 3.8 and 3.9. [list of accolades since I started my last 60 credits]. [my school] has taught me that no matter where a person starts, with the right interventions, that person can meet and exceed their goals. I am confident I will be successful in [program]’s master’s program in speech-language pathology. I got good feedback from my profs about this section as well. Good luck!
  2. I was fortunate enough to get into a grad program, but my backup was to join AmeriCorps for a 10/12 month program. I had worked AmeriCorps previously and it was tons of fun... though I would do their LiteracyCorps as opposed to their EnvironmentalCorps (my previous membership)
  3. Also received my acceptance e-mail today. So glad!
  4. Wait listed by Adelphi's LI program. Better than a reject, right? What did they ask you on the interview? I am interviewing this coming week. Good luck!
  5. This seems fairly normal. I was e-mailed by Lehman earlier this week stating a transcript hadn't been received (although I had sent it in early Jan...). At this point, I've accepted the CUNYs are a crapshoot.
  6. I'm a dude-SLP. Only one in a graduating class of like, 50-60 going for speech (the others are audi). lol
  7. Well, I noticed you are applying to the same CUNYs I am - Brooklyn was pretty lax regarding their word count, however Lehman and Queens both required a 500-word SOP. Super annoying. My CSDCAS SOP was literally the max amount of characters allotted (which translated to ~3 whole pages double-spaced), so yeah.
  8. Agreed. I wish every school used CSDCAS (and especially so because I absolutely hate 500-word limits for our SOPs).
  9. Yes, even though IIRC the "mailing" is electronic. That's CSDCAS for you.
  10. My application wasn't listed as complete + verified until last Thursday and I had a complete date of just 2 days prior to your husband's. You should DEFINITELY be seeing something this week.
  11. Feeling anxious because my apps JUST got mailed out by CSDCAS. Although I know I should be safe regarding deadlines, it still makes me fairly worried.
  12. Just sent out my 8/9th app. Wishing luck to all of you applying... the waiting game sucks! BTW, is anyone here applying to any CUNY schools? What's the consensus on the few programs? I know if I get in I'll likely go (can't beat the price) but I've heard very little from my current school's faculty about any of those programs being large or super involved.
  13. I agree with you. I'm not sure about cut-offs unless they're explicitly stated (like NYMC's program). As someone who spent his first two years as a computer science major, my GPA isn't as pristine as some of you who were speech from the start, or at least had an idea of what they wanted to do entering college (or, when doing your post-bacc). I'd like to think looking at the coursework factors in greatly when deciding whether or not to dismiss an applicant simply based on their GPA. For example, I believe relatively good grades in CS (or any "difficult" non-speech major) shouldn't frowned upon for not being straight A's, but should still be seen as a positive.
  14. Must the transcript be processed before the application may be submitted?
  15. I ended up writing about my culture-rich background, how I planned to bring those experiences into the field and marry them with my extensive (for a 21-year old) background. I went formal with regard to contractions, grammar, etc. and I certainly didn't try to win the crowd at a poetry slam. I think it varies, but from what my professors stated, they prefer you err on the side of formality.
  16. Just 8... my professors request that if you're going to apply to more than 8 schools and you're getting a recommendation from them, they'd like to "talk it over". That and, well, if I don't get into any of those 8 schools (which are a mix of reasonable to extremely competitive), I probably wouldn't have gotten into anywhere else I semi-want to apply to.
  17. This is what my school specifies: Hard copies of the following documents must also be provided to the faculty member: Curriculum vitae (The overall GPA and Major GPA must be specified) Informal transcript Statement of Purpose A list of schools that you intend to apply and the associated information, including the deadline of application, the required documents/forms, the method of submitting the letter (e.g., via website or via mail), stamped envelopes with addresses of schools if letters have to be sent by mail, etc. Hope that helps anyone confused. I'd like to think this is the standard.
  18. I'm going Montclair, William Paterson and Kean in NJ, while a few CUNYs being the only not on LI. Have you heard much about the programs in NJ you're applying to?
  19. Anyone here applying to schools in downstate NY and NJ?
  20. It's most certainly a variable. Quite a few people from my undergrad program didn't get in last year (from what I've heard, though I don't know much of their grades) and I attend the university with the #1 SLP program in NY according to a few rankings. I'd say don't bank on it.
  21. I'm waiting until December, when my Fall 2013 semester grades are officially on transcript to send applications in. I'd like to maximize my GPA (plus I'm taking 16 credits of JUST CDS classes this semester, so a 4.0 would look good). Anyone know if they look down upon anyone who applies a month/few weeks before deadline?
  22. AFAIK, 2 letters MUST be from in-major faculty/professors - at least for the majority of schools I've looked at. A 3rd/4th may be from an employer or otherwise.
