  1. Those would be the rudest rejection letters ever! Also, I never had a snowy/rainy day off for school or work. I guess thats one of the disadvantages of living in Cali ... or maybe its an advantage?
  2. Very funny Totally didnt realize its Friday the 13th
  3. Not to lower expectations (since I too am waiting for Rice), but I believe we'll definitely hear back sometime next week. Its still alittle early for UT-Austin (idk if they follow a similar schedule as UT-Arlington) and Rice. Congrats Telkanuru!
  4. The first line is ridiculous... If that was me, Id start smiling in the very beginning, and then my heart would jump off a cliff when I read the "we are sorry" part.
  5. @Josh J. That was my first thought when I was writing my SOP!! Also, I havent heard anything from IU. Unless, of course, they sent a physical letter. I need to check my mailbox
  6. Ugh... Come on IU, Rice, and UT-Austin! Before my life insurance expires
  7. I just heard Harper Lee is publishing a sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird" called "Go Set A Watchman." If anyone is interested, Amazon has pre-orders available $17. The story takes place some 20 years after the events in the first book.
  8. Absolutely wonderful advice RevolutionBlues! I've only been rejected from a few problems, but it still does hurt. I'll come back to this thread, whether or not Im going somewhere this year.
  9. @Heimat Historian, I also have an account on Academia.edu, and several of my POIs looked me up, as I did them. Personally, I dont think it matters in admission. I think the POIs that looked me up, did so to gain more information about myself; rather than calling/emailing for a scheduled interview. Either way, I dont think it matters. If the POIs are interested in a candidate, theyll ask for more information, one way or another. Nevertheless, I love the site cause some POIs post their articles and you can read it without paying for individual subscriptions. @Kateosee, Good to know when UMich will respond soon! @kblooms, Upon acceptance to a program (with good funding) that I am pleased with (I want to attend all, but some more than others), I will first cry from happiness and/or scream like I won the lottery. Then, Im totally going to call everyone and brag. I think alittle bragging is appropriate in this case lol. @ashiepoo72, That is a beautiful story, ashiepoo72! That is something very personal, and thank you for sharing with us =D I too have a similar story. Both of my parents were professors in Budapest, Hungary. Unfortunately, during the Communist Era they were forced to pledge their service to the government, and when in the early 1990s, Hungary denounced Communism, they lost everything. We were kicked out of the country, lived for a number of years in a refugee camp in Marseilles, and then finally, immigrated to Cali in 2001. Since then, my mom, who was a biology professor, is working as an RN at CA Mens Colony Prison. My dad, a former medieval theologist professor, is working as a notary. Although I was too young to remember my life in Hungary, I can totally see how much my parents have suffered, and how much they lost. Going into academia for me is also a very personal decision. @Jezzlin, Thank you for letting me know! One of my POIs actually called me today and left a voice mail with a similar message. I was at work, so I couldnt pick up, but I presume her telephone call is good sign for me? @Josh J. I know my UCLA POI quite well, and the last time I spoke to her, she told me that responses will be sent out in the final 2 weeks of FEB. Maybe a few letters will be sent out this week, but a bulk will be sent next week, for sure. @JTE I've done the same thing lol. Whenever I talked to my parents, I give them an update on my applications, and when I do, I always make a few references to this site. This is a very very supporting, and solid community! Glad I stumbled upon it!! @Aubstopper, I had a similar experience with Duke. They wanted all my transcripts from the time I went to UC Berkeley (dropped cause my parents needed help in LA), community college (went to two), and finally from UC Davis. First they didnt get my community college transcripts, then they lost my Berkeley ones. It was a very frustrating and messy time. Lets hope I dont have to do it again next application season >.<.. @Chiqui74, I want to shake and cry like a lunatic too =( After last week with three rejections, Im really really really hoping for some good news this week. I need it. EDIT: Just remembered theres a new episode of Walking Dead. That'll keep me distracted for a good hr haha
  10. I was thinking the same thing. I noticed alot of rejections, in recent years, occurred in the first full week of Feb, but if you go back alittle further, responses were sent out in late Feb. Whatever the case, we will most likely hear something in the next two weeks. *fingers (also) crossed* I think we can say the same thing about Rice.
  11. Soon a new week begins. Hopefully we'll get some positive news
  12. Yeah... I noticed it was personally signed too, and not a copy. I know its too early to say this, but I really hope I dont need to go through this application process again next year...
  13. Ugh... Just checked the mail, and I got a rejection letter from UC Irvine. This isnt a good feeling...
  14. Thankfully I didnt bother with Berkeley. They simply do not show mercy >=P
  15. I really hope so. What is your focus? Also, when did you hear back from UCI? And if I may ask, who is your POI at UCD? I did my undergrad at Davis, so Im curious
  16. I got rejected from UW too >.<!
  17. Proud owner of the first 19 Walking Dead comics
  18. Agreed, but at some schools, like Davis, the renting prices are really low. I paid $600 for my own private bedroom/bath, and I had this neat little balcony. Campus was about 15mins walking distance, and the bus stop was less than a block away. I know UCLA, UCI and CAL has RIDICULOUS renting prices; except for maybe UCI's grad housing, which isnt too expensive. Nevertheless, I still agree EDIT: @Chiqui, Im too embarassed to tell people. Let me just say... I took the GRE 3 times over a 2 year period >.<...
  19. I have Nature's Metropolis signed by Dr. Cronon hehe. He came to UC Davis for a guest lecture last year, which is how I met him, and like a schoolgirl waiting for her favorite band, I brought a copy of his book and asked him to sign it. Really really cool guy, approachable and quirky. Regarding the book, it too is one of my favorites. Maybe not in my top 100, but it is definitely very memorable and profound with amazing details. Im with you Ivan. Although, I heard back from NWU today and I was rejected =(
  20. Two of my colonial historians, during my undergrad, said the same thing, and they also added that the benefits+salary is better in the snowy north.
  21. I dont have any nails left to bite...
  22. Finished two awesome novels - The Golden Ass by Apuleius, and The Pot of Gold by Titus Plautus. The first one is, believe it or not, very very funny. I had quite a few laughs, and proceeded to share the experience with friends and family. They too thought it was funny. Wiki the story! The latter keeps you entertained but isnt as good as the first one. Now Im going to read something pertinent to my area, and that is, Impending Crisis by David Potter. I bought the book a year or so ago, and skimmed it a few times, but never really read it cover to cover. I assigned myself to finish it by the end of the week =)
