  1. Thank you, I was super ecstatic when I received the email!! I know that last year they had two orientations one in May and another in July. Hope you all hear good news!! I am an alumni there I received my BASW in May, 2014. if you guys have any questions feel free to ask away, I'd be glad to answer any questions I can :D

I was admitted to CSULB's 1 year program... being that you went there for undergrad, how are the SW professors there?

  2. Hey there!

Not who you asked but also went to csulb for my undergrad. I can't speak on the apartment situation but I can expand a bit on the area. It's in a residential area so it doesn't have the party school vibe if that's what you're looking for. You're only a few minutes away from the beach which is great and there's plenty of things to do at the pier. Downtown is nice too with it's share of bars, clubs, and restaurants so you're not top far from night life. The campus itself is huge. About 30k students I believe. It's well maintained and students and professors are friendly. Overall it's a good casual environment. I enjoyed it so much I hope to be back for an MSW. It really is a great school :)

    Thank you!

  3. The area is good, like Teem89 said it is residential with a ton of apartments that students live in all around the school. Parking sucks though and there is traffic most of the day due to the school and the hospital/businesses next door. If you do have a car there are plenty of other chill towns nearby, San Pedro, Carson, Lakewood, etc but LB is big so there are options. The campus is huge and taken care of, but yes it can feel crowded at times. However, I think classes for the program are on days undergrads are not really there I know Friday for sure.

    Thanks! This helps alot !

  4. I was aiming for CSULB but I was put on the "pending list" I went there as an undergrad and I enjoyed it. However, I am good with CSULA because I had heard about their forensic concentration. I think CSULB and LA are on the same rank but I do like CSULB's campus better in my opinion.

My GPA is not the greatest 3.4. I am currently in the social services field as a case manager for homeless vets and been doing it for almost two years. Previous to that I worked at a school district with special-ed. I have a few years of volunteer experience working with formally incarcerated, internship at the probation dept, youth mentoring, and art workshops for at-risk youth in an art studio. My current job now has been the one that has taught me the most. We have interns here from USC and CSULB working with the same population either teaching classes or one-on-one therapy so I been drilling them with all kinds of questions.

I was accepted into CSULB's 1 year program, and I plan on attending, however I've never been to LB before or the campus. You said you went there undergrad? How is area, are there a lot of things to do? Are you aware of any student apartments in the area?:)

  5. I received a call from Liz, I didn't get into my program of choice due to then reducing the number of slots (the 1 year) so she offered me a few options, none of which I was interested in. So  I will be accepting LB's offer of admission. So my spot will open up for someone else! Good luck~

  6. That's pretty cool. I had heard it mentioned before but didn't see that much about it in terms of their website. I understand a little more now why their program is seen in such high regard with many having it as their first choice. SDSU only has 2 classes that will count towards pre-licensing coursework, that I know of but the other three aren't too bad for paying out of pocket. CSULB was definitely a contender for me but it came down to too many MSW programs within L.A. in competition (fieldwork wise).

Do you know if  SDSU requires advanced standing students to take the qualifying exam? If so when?

  7. I'm going to assume you are asking because of the CSULB summer bridge program. If so, Lisa, the admissions director, called and told me the $3,500 will have to come out of pocket. I can't remember the exact words she used to why I wasn't getting any federal aid, but I do remembering thinking "the filing period has passed."If you aren't referring to CSULB summer bridge, then I would say call that specific school and ask, but from my knowledge, any financial aid for summer 2015 would have been awarded with the 2014-2015 award. Furthermore, I would say research scholarships. I know CSULB had plenty of them on their website.

Yeah I was referring to LB's program. I called the school's fin aid office though and she said that there are summer loans available. I think the Direct Stafford Loan & The Graduate Plus Loan. She said I'd have to get the application from their office, but I'll also look  for scholarships as well.

  8. @daisydukes hey I know it's off-topic (will delete later), but did you mail your app for CSULB on feb 9? or did you get a confirmation email on that day? I mailed mine around the same time and I don't even know if they received it :/ thanks.

No I mailed it on Feb 7th, and it was received by them on the 9th. (I know this because I put tracking on it to know when it was delivered). I received an email by them the next day on the 10th, saying that it has been received, and letting me know that i can check the status through the self service website. I think you should have gotten a confirmation email by now though. You should call and check.

  9. I know in undergrad, at some universities they have financial aid specifically for summer session in which you can fill out forms through the school not through FAFSA and see if you qualify for any financial aid through them.

Hmm, I'll have to look into that. Thanks!

  10. It depends on your program. When you fill out FAFSA, the summer is included. You should check with your program; some programs only give grant aid in the summer if for some reason you have leftover from the regular academic year. If your program starts in the summer and you'll be fulltime, you should get aid but again, check with your school (or schools of interest). Good luck!

Yes, they rollover funds from Fall/Spring into summer if students have not exhausted all of their funds, but if I didn't apply for financial aid (wasn't in school) last school year 2014-2015, I would think I would be able to get aid in the summer correct?

  11. The only ones I applied to from that list were SFSU and CSULB. I did my undergraduate at CSULB and am in the MSW program there as well, and with that school, it's extremely competitive. I did the calculations during orientation and not even 10% of the applicants got in. A lot of the schools do rolling admissions so in that case getting applications in as soon as possible after they're available is key. I think the further on in the process, the more competitive it is. Northridge, I've heard, is one of the easiest to get into. A former peer of mine got into Fullerton not having much if any SW experience. I've hear San Jose is competitive as well. All I can really attest to is long beach, though.

I got into Long beach this year, can you tell me about your experience there?

  12. You still have a chance, stay positive. Who knows, you may hear back next week with a decision.

You were right! I just received the email stating for me to send in my application checklist!

  13. For those who attend Full time programs, do people work during their time in an MSW program? (Those who don't receive a TITLE 4E or Mental Health stipend )

If you don't work, do you use loans to help pay for your housing and tuition? Do you know of any popular scholarships that I could apply to?

  14. Wow. I'm sorry that happened! But, you're very lucky they gave you that option!! I'm glad it worked out  :). I agree that it was probably because of the whole online and mail-in confusing application procedure; it definitely pushed me back from turning in my application earlier.

have you heard anything back from sdsu?
