  1. Colorado State in the fall. Couldn't be happier!
  2. Thanks everyone for the responses on what time to expect notification! I suppose I'll just keep checking my emails through the night as before.
  3. Just a quick question, what time of the day do emails generally come out? Is there a trend? I ask because, as an international student, my timezone is pretty out of whack and it might drive me a bit less crazy if I can narrow it down and relax for part of the day...
  4. The waiting is killing me a lot more than I thought it would!! Colorado State doesn't usually contact people til the end of February from what I've seen... Another month of this, eek. Saying that, congratulations to everyone so far with an interview or acceptance!! Whatever the opposite of schadenfreude is, I'm experiencing that right now! Really exciting seeing the results roll in.
  5. Thanks for the clarification Gilbertrollins, as someone who is already happily employed utilising my specialisation, I'm going to respectfully disagree with Karl32. I ended up explaining that whilst I was unsatisfied with my mark I am unable to resit the exam before the admissions deadline as there are no more GRE tests offered in my area before the cut off date and to refer to my academic transcript for previous mixed methods/quantitative research marks which were in the A-/A range. Thought it was best to not make excuses for performing badly and instead draw attention to my previous academic experience with quantitative. All a bit ridiculous really, I want to conduct qualitative research anyway haha.
  6. Hi, I'm an international student and just got my GRE scores back today. Verbal- 162, Analytical writing- 5.0 and quantitative- 145. My quantitative score has been pretty crushing for me as I tested higher in practice tests, however, I have not taken math in 8 years and due to the conditions of a scholarship I've applied for, I was only left with three weeks notice to study/learn maths from scratch for the GRE. I'm applying to masters programmes for Fall 2014, the head of department and my preferred supervisor from my top chocie department have been in contact with me personally (previous to me receiving my GRE results) saying they would be thrilled to have me which has now put me in an awkward position. Is it a good idea to contact my potential supervisor ASAP and try to explain the bad score? Would that be against protocol or looked down on if I were to attempt to explain it? I've taken several mixed methods and demographics papers at university and received decent marks. As I'm working fulltime at the moment and where I come from we only have limited amounts of GRE tests a year and the last one for the year has already been so I can't retake. if anyone has any advice please help! I'm so crushed at this point I don't know what to do.

  8. Are you able to be a bit more specific? What's your area of specialty/interest? Are you dependent on a TA or funding? Would you prefer a large or small department? What kind of location were you after? What kind of advisor would you want? A competitive or collaborative grad group? etc. etc. It's pretty impossible to recommend anywhere when there's no criteria provided by you.
  9. Hi everyone, Currently slogging thorough the applications process form NZ, struggling to find some 'safety' MA programmes to look into. My research focus is on post-disaster social contingency and looking into alternative cultural knowledge sources for recovery. My top choices are Madison (however unlikely) and CSU, not sure about the others yet. Waiting on GRE scores but I'm hoping having been awarded a prestigious national scholarship for study next year will help my chances. Good luck everyone, if there's any recommendations people have for more disaster research skewed sociology centres please let me know, I feel like I've spent hours and hours researching and still don't have a clue what programmes are suitable save the two mentioned. Stats- - GPA 3.69 - GRE- TBC however, averaged in the low to mid 160s for practice tests - Scholarship to study at an American University of my choice - Very supportive LoRs
