  1. I would say dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable! I had a 2-day interview trip earlier this week and I brought a couple options so that I could make up my mind when I got there. I end up going with outfits that one might call more eccentric, but those were the ones that I actually wear in business situations at work and that was definitely the right choice. I felt comfortable and didn't give my clothes a second thought all day. I think I actually would have felt awkward if I had gone with outfits that I never would have worn in really life.
  2. Yep, my school is open Monday too! So I'm going to convince myself that just maybe the schools that are open will be really good about contacting applicants on Monday, because some of their colleagues at other universities and organization will have the day off, so they'll have few emails and the likes. (Right? It almost makes sense…)
  3. And, remember, conference title/abstract lists can have mistakes - so if your POI spots a difference, I don't think they'd assume it's something on your end, especially not something deceitful. I have presented at a local GIS conference for several years, and one year they put in the title and abstract from the year before, instead of the current one! I didn't even realize it until the people who showed up for my talk were confused about whether they were in the right room or not, so then I ended up incorporating some of the stuff from the year before into the talk!
  4. So true! And all my readings this term of online/dropbox, so it's so hard for me not to come check grad cafe every couple pages, since I'm already on my computer anyways...
  5. Ooh, that's a good one dptowis! And a fun one, it could lead to some interesting conversations
  6. One question I wasn't expecting was "Who are you intellectual role models in the field?" I was so nervous that the only people I could think of were the ones I'd cited in my SOP. Afterwards, I thought of soooooo many! I now really hope that I get asked this question again in some other interview, because I am now 100% ready for it. And in thinking about it, it's a clever question, because it gets at what underlying school of thought you adhere to, without directly asking…
  7. On the flip side, I do like that all the subfields share a grad cafe forum! I think we have some great conversations and that we have a critical mass of people using the anthro threads to keep interesting topics going
  8. Hi everyone - I need some feedback on an interview! It was via Skype and while some of the questions were challenging, I think it went OK. Towards the end, they asked if invited to perspective student weekend if I would attend. From what I've gathered from this forum, in years past, students have been invited to this weekend when they are accepted. Is this a good sign? Is this a way of gauging my interest without asking directly? Should I just not read so much into it? I would like to be cautiously optimistic - but considering how much I would LOVE to go there, I maybe it would be wise to wait to get my hopes up... And here's sending good thoughts out to everyone's whose schools notify soon!
  9. I think I totally jinxed myself with the post about the phone calls - I just missed a "No Caller ID" call, which I never get, and now I'm totally wondering what it was! It's probably the same telemarketer from Antigua, but still, I'd rather know that wonder... (I think I'm so eager to know, because I thought this would be a big week, so I've put a lot of pressure on today now that the rest of the week had been quite!)
  10. Does anyone else get really excited when they see an unknown number calling, hoping that it's a call from a POI? I did undergrad at one of the schools I'm applying to, so now every time I see a call from that area code, I answer eagerly and then its always someone asking me to give money to the alumni campaign - arghhhhh!
  11. I also imagine the people who chose to report GREs and GPA with their results are self selecting - I've noticed several posts that will report at high GRE but leave the GPA blank or vice versa. I think people are reporting data that their proud of (which is great) but I don't think that the scores reported can necessarily be extrapolated to all the posts without GRE data.
  12. Interesting! I'm sure it'll be a great chance for you to learn more about the department and about the school. You two will have to report back and let us know how the visits go
  13. Congrats ecologaia!! Enjoy it (and don't sweat the CV mix-up!)
  14. Hey daykid, is this for an accepted students visit or for an interview? If it were me, I'd be more like to opt to stay with students on an accepted students visit, just to get a better feel for the school and for grad student life there (and I imagine if staying with students if an option, that they have offered to have someone stay and would want to show you around town and such). On an interview however, I think I'd prefer a hotel, so that I could have time to run or read more articles by faculty or just relax and get ready. Just my $0.02. Basically, I think it amounts to whether you would want/need the extra time you'd have staying in a hotel, or if you'd be okay with maybe not having much time to yourself, but the opportunity to learn more about the school/program.
  15. Oh, and a lot of school's career advising centers will still help you out even if your an alumni. I'm 6 years out of college and I contacted my college's career advising center about a question I had about something this application cycle.
  16. Ditto to what strudelle said. A lot of universities and college either have CV/Resume workshops, or they have a career advising center that has staff that could look over your CV and give you feedback. If you go one of those routes, it's still you writing it, so you have full control over and are comfortable with what is in there, but you'll have the chance to get input and constructive feedback on yours and look at other example CVs.
  17. Me to! Here's hoping we all hear something good this week
  18. Great point, Canis! I've definitely also heard it's important to be aware of what's on department website. When I was applying for a job and referred to something they has posted on their website, they were impressed. About already having asked questions of your POI, I'm traveling to a school for a campus interview next month, but I have never been in touch with anyone there (well, except for the grad dean who invited me for the interview), so I don't really have a POI. I plan to read article by the 4 profs I feel I would have the best fit with, but other than that, I don't think there's much I can do, right?
  19. I haven't heard anything from Berkeley either. And speaking of application gaffs, one of my applications asked both for a resume and also a work/school history timeline where you have to enter each company and the dates into separate boxes, an well as a job description. It was taking so long that I stopped part way through and then totally forgot to finish before submitting - oops! I hope they look at my resume before they jump to the conclusion that there are massive gaps in my employment history...
  20. MPollywog, I think a thank-you email is great! Once you've been contacted by your POI (e.g. they invited you for an interview), there is nothing wrong with keeping the line of communication open. When I was applying for jobs after undergrad, I always sent a post-interview thank you note. I think it's a nice gesture that certainly won't hurt anyone's impression of you. I think these posts have been more about when to initiate contact with a POI during application review season. So, in short, don't worry, you did the right thing
  21. Good question! I'm in the same boat - I contacted POIs back in October and have not had contact with most since submitting my applications. I think that for emails at this point in the process you'd want to have a specific question or reason for writing (i.e. not just a 'have you decided yet?' type question), but being a finalist for a scholarship is indeed news. And congrats on that, btw! I'd say if you don't email the POIs, at least contact an admissions person about it to let them know.
  22. Hey daykid, I sent you a PM! No, I haven't heard. I thought I was being ridiculous my application statuses for various schools thinking, surely they know how tormented I am by this waiting and any department would let me know before updating the website, but your post has given me renewed hope in checking application websites, so there goes the next half hour…
