  1. Magoosh and the Manhattan Prep books/practice tests definitely helped me raise my verbal and quant scores - for the AWA, I highly recommend: https://peaktestprep.com/gre/live-online-gre-analytical-writing-prep-course
  2. For the first one, I was counting the drawer while closing up at work. I thought I felt my phone buzz in my sweatshirt pocket, realized it wasn't there, grabbed it off the counter and checked my email - and there it was, my first, fully-funded offer. I practically started crying, I was so relieved. I was finally, definitely going to grad school. I had to explain to my boss while basically in tears what was going on, and had to count the damn drawer like three times cause I couldn't concentrate. For the second, my top choice, I was working on cleaning the kitchen. I had a free day for the rest of the day, so I was trying to think of a way to spend it that would distract me so I wouldn't be constantly checking my phone (I had it on good authority that I would hear the final decision the following day). As I was thinking this, I checked my phone anyway out of habit. And I had an unofficial email letting me know that I was accepted with full funding. This whole process has been so humbling and amazing. And I wouldn't for the life of me ever want to go through it again.
  3. I think only you can really answer this question. One thing I would point out for you to also consider, is that a happy student produces better work. If being apart from your girlfriend is going to lead to you be very unhappy, having no fun or social life, then this would likely affect your research, and perhaps the lower ranked department would in fact be a better place for you to achieve more. However, if you can live apart from each other and still be happy, social, and have a fulfilling life outside of work, then you probably have your answer.

    Bloomington, IN

I just went on a campus visit last week - I liked Bloomington a lot more than I thought I would. It's a cute, fun, and overall quiet town. If you need a big city to be happy, you probably won't like it. It seems that except for certain bars and restaurants, everything is closed by 9 or 10 on a weeknight. Overall, I found the people to be open-minded, but also clean-cut. For example, there is a definite drinking culture, but at the same time they are very strict about underage drinking - I picked up a six pack and not only was my license closely examined, but I needed to show a credit card with the same name on it, and be able to answer a few questions about my age and ID. (This may be normal depending on where you're from - where I'm from it would definitely be considered overboard.) I, personally, am cool with it, cause it's irrelevant to me, and I think underage drinking only adds more headaches to a town. I was surprised how many students I saw studying, everywhere. It's made my decision about where to go to grad school that much more difficult - it was a back-up option that rose significantly in my opinion after visiting. If you have any specific questions (that a visitor can answer) let me know.
  5. I do, actually. I haven't had a chance to get out to visit Indiana at all - I was wondering what led you to choose Indiana over other programs you were accepted to, and what do you think about the program so far?
  6. Congrats 88!! I've also applied to Slavic programs this year. I haven't jumped into this thread, honestly because I've been superstitious about talking about where I've applied to - I won't even tell extended family, to their frustration. Congratulations on your acceptance to Yale! What is your area of focus?
