  1. Thanks so much for the reply ! It really helps! I will give serious consideration whether to be that "admirable" lol. Just another question. A lm a little confused here... So when I applied, I chose the EPD concentration. And I do wanna do APEA. But given my background, is it possible? Any prerequisites to meet? I think I'm being a bit greedy but just wanna give it a try. Any thoughts?
  2. @ Cinnamon98 I have friends from SIPA. From what they told me, you can always shift your concentration at almost the beginning of every semester.... So I wouldn't worry about the flexibility of the courses there. My friend is also an international student. Now at the graduation season, he is still grappling with employment. As he told me, cuz u have all those whose concentration is in finance and Econ, and the MBAs from Columbia's biz school and nyu's stern, it's quite hard for u if u wanna end up in private sector. I don't know much about your previous bkg, but I assume it won't be that hard for you cuz u have law in ur undergraduate major? Question, You mentioned that language course are good at MSFS. Could you elaborate a little on that? I do wAnna learn a second language but I'm not sure if they offer intro level language courses. And do they count toward the GPA and the required credits for each semester? Thanks for sharing your thoughts ;-))
  3. @jimster Quote: 4) I think people at the tech/new media field will recognize both programs. For job opportunities, it really depends on your projects, your skill set and your network. You probably can find both ITP alumni and MFA DT alumni working at same company like Frog and Google. Do you know what kinda job they do in companies like frog and google? My worry is that I don't have a design bkg and I'm in TV industry, which I don't wanna do any more. And IT industry is really attracting me, I worry if itp can allow enough space for me to catch up the skills necessary to enter that sector.
  4. Hi, aukunseide. I think we are concerned with similar stuff, only thAt I d worry more about the career outcome since ir don't have any design or CS bkg. the itp program has about 100-140 students per year and they have a lotting system for class registration when too many students swarm in to the same one.
  5. same situation. What I didn't write about in the post was the tuition. I don't know if MSFS would give any funding. That will also be a decider.
  6. Hi guys. I am just overjoyed by the MSFS admission at this moment and starting to think over the choice between SIPA and MSFS. Honestly, I never saw myself making this choice. This may be an easy one for some, since MSFS is ranked top in ir programs, corrcect me if I'm wrong. But for me, it's sooooo hard since NYC is just so attractive to me. Forgive my ignorance and here comes the questions: MSFS LESS QUANT FOCUSED THAN SIPA? I had two years work experience in media and haven't take any quant courses since graduated from high school 6 or 7 years ago. Neither have I taken the micro or macro Econ courses. I'm worried that SIPA's quant and Econ-heavy MIA program would be too overwhelming for me. But on the other hand, they seem to guarantee better job placement after graduation? MSFS MORE PROFESSIONALLY RECOGNIZED? ( IN IR OR PRIVATE SECTOR?) I am an international student and I want to try my luck to find a job in the US 2years later, before coming back to my own country. In that case, the Columbia name doesn't seem to bear too much weight then, cuz msfs is more recognized within the country and the IR circle? ALUMNI NETWORK IN PRIVATE SECTOR? How do you guys think of the smaller size of the MSFS program and it's alumni network? I know there are a number of prominent figures who attended the program and later seized high positions in the state government, but as an international student I couldn't think too much about that. So how are MSFS alumni doing in the private sector? ( I wrote in my PS that private enterprises have been a key element in development solutions. I believed so and I don't feel ashamed to look for a job in the private sector after attending an IR program) Any thoughts? There have been very little discussion about MSFS on this forum, esp compared with that of SAIS and SIPA. I'm glad if this post can spur some discussion. Many thanks to your opinions!
  7. @ are we there yet Thanks for offering the info here. It's been really helpful! I have a few questions as well. 1. SIPA is known for its quant and math heavy curricular. Although I'm admitted, I gotta say I've been away from math for at least 6 years since my graduation from high school. I know doing well in quant is essential in getting a job, but I m worried I can't catch up. Is there any math camp or intro level Econ classes I can find at SIPA? (They admitted me despite my lack of Econ background. I m both thrilled and worried!) 2. What about the language classes? Are they popular with the SIPA student body? I'm already speaking two languages but I want to start another, from the beginning. Would you suggest me to take intro level classes before attending or just go straight to SIPA and take the non credit courses in the first semester? Thanks again ;-).
  8. Big cingrats! I don't have any info on funding. May I ask if that was in the admission decision letter on applyyourself?
  9. hi, guys. Does anyone have similar experience like me? I applied for and got an offer from NYU's journalism school two years ago but then decided to work first, in the TV industry. This year, I applied for ITP at Tisch. The online application asked me whether I have applied to any divisions of NYU and required a UID, which I provided. Now that I'm a bit worried over my chance to get in, I start to think why they ask for my previous application experience. Will they refer to my previous application material? Will that offer say something about me? Any ideas? Thanks guys.
  10. Hi, guys~ Just a quick questions here. I was just wondering how you would interpret a program extending its deadline again and again. Does that mean fewer applicants this year? In fact, I applied for NYU's ITP under the Tisch School of the Arts. It's initial deadline (Dec. 1) was extended to 1.8, 2014, but then on its website, it says it's still receiving application on a case by case basis. What do you say about this?

  12. Thanks for the point Npr:) could you elaborate a bit on why GT would be a stretch? Is it for the lack of Econ courses or work experience? I contacted their admission office the other day and it seemed that they are not as strict as SAIS on Econ requirements.
  13. Many thx to you Swedishcoffee. I'll definitely mention my plan to complete the Econ courses before matriculation, if admitted!
  14. Hi guys. I'm getting started with my application. SAIS, SIPA, JACKSON, MSFS are among my list. Undergraduate GPA 3.5 Tier One international studies university in China Major in Intl journalism & communication Interned at state media(Chinadaily), Rizzoli China(Italian media group) and a publishing company. Overseas volunteer in Ukraine 2 months Up to now 1.5 y W.E. at CCTV International (China Central Televison) GRE v610 q800 aw4 TOEFL 108 (taking another one this week ...) After reading some of the threads here, I've got a bit worried over my competency cuz it seems many of you guys have got several years of w.e. And i don't have Econ coursework at undergrads. Are my chosen programs beyond reach? Any comments, suggestions would be super welcome!
