  5. Apartment found!!!! Now onto the roommate search...

  6. Hmmm, so I'm thinking backpack printer / ink tablet (very ambitious, I know) umbrella ('cause it's Seattle and I'm moving from SoCal) also the DSM V I kind of want to throw a few grad school guides in there, any ideas?
  7. booo sorry you don't have that option acarr
  8. I'm seriously considering making an amazon wishlist to see if relatives will help me afford all the random shit I'm going to need to move across country for graduate school. But I also can't help but feel shy about it? Like it's somehow super exploitative or selfish? But I really do need the help getting basic shit like a backpack, printer, etc. Has anyone else done this before?

Also does anyone know about the Greenwood neighborhood?
  11. I am head over heels about an unfunded doctorate. Most of the students in the program work part-time the first year and then go to school full-time after - accumulating an impressive debt by the end. I should be eligible for forgiveness after, and my expected debt isn't that much more than I'll expect to make my first year (whew!) but it's impressive nonetheless. For those of you with unfunded (or underfunded) how did you decide how much to budget for living expenses? Rent for studios in my area seem to be pretty solidly around 1000/month, trying to decide if it's worth it to compromise and get roommates or move farther from school and have to commute.

What about West Seattle? I hear there's awesome queer community there... but it's also the one place I didn't get a chance to visit. Well, that and Fremont

Found out there were some really cool new apartments in Belltown... but a friend says there used to be a real crack problem. Folks have any idea how much of a problem this is? I used to live in Oakland, and in a super meth-heavy city before that so it's not a total deal breaker but it'd be good to know before signing a lease.
  14. Have folks ever done things like paid rent with these cards? That's the only part about a credit card that seems weird to me... otherwise it seems like a reasonable solution.
  15. INTERVIEW COMPLETED OMG THE WAITING

  16. Unless you expect to be eligible for forgiveness (my plan) Right now I'm trying to decide less on how much debt and more which debt... although I also don't quite understand when it makes sense to use work-study/fellowships to pay down balance versus use it for living expenses

    roommates?

    I like that idea! Thanks!!!

    roommates?

No... my undergrad was a small school and the grad school (fingers crossed!) is WAY smaller But it is in a college town with multiple universities, I may have luck that way.
  19. what sorts of things to folks put in a thank you?
  20. I'm not sure (because I'm not in SLP) but for things like social work or psychology it gets pretty tricky. Have you contacted the NY licensing board? Good luck!!!

    roommates?

I've asked at my goal school about these things and they don't seem to have them. (It is a REALLY small school though)

    roommates?

Had and loved roommates in undergrad... but it's been a lovely couple of years without them. BUT we'd have to to take out far less loans if we got a place with roommates. Has anyone found fellow grad students for roommates? How did you go about finding them?
  23. What about getting a loan for taking summer classes at the same university? Does that even make sense compared to getting a small personal loan or new credit card?
  24. I know summer funding is HARD to find... but I really, really, REALLY want to make it happen if possible. Pros: could take summer classes at university instead of community college (this is kind of a big one since I've been VERY disappointed by the quality of instruction making up my pre-reqs so far) get apartment established in new city well before the grad study horror starts start networking with potential internships / clinical supervision while I still have sanity because grad horrors have not started easier move, more apartments open and can get free furniture from students leaving avoid another SoCal summer... it's the first week we've hit 80 and anything above 75 makes me curse the world extra loans needed would be a drop in the bucket compared to my expected debt upon graduation Cons: $$$$$ / How the hell do I fund this / probably more debt later on leaving employment early (although honestly this is also a pro) But I have no idea how to go about making it happen... private loans? Credit card? Luckily I have good credit for now, but private loans are kind of terrifying. Ideas?
  25. It seems to me that the MSW is a bit more immediately professionally useful, but the PsyD might mean a bit more academic prestige. Seems like both can do similar work immediately upon graduation but that the PsyD may be a bit more competitive for leadership positions later on. Basically it's been difficult to get clear information comparing the two. There is a lot on the difference between the PsyD and the PhD, but not very much comparing the PsyD and the MSW for community mental health. Has anyone else heard anything about these two?
