I did a one year MA in the UK, and didn't even try to apply while I was studying. I was too busy, didn't have a strong writing sample, or develop relationships with the professors who eventually wrote LORs for me. Also, working on my MA thesis helped me shape my SOP and gave me a clearer idea of what I want to research at the PhD level.

This is both sad and interesting. I’m an American student and was accepted to a second MA in Film Studies at UEA for this upcoming semester. As of this morning, they've actually awarded me a half-tuition scholarship. I’m now wondering where those funds are coming from.
Partial tuition scholarships are not uncommon at the MA level, I got one myself. It's just rarer at the PhD level. And to be honest, even if they gave me a partial scholarship, when you factor in living expenses, it just wouldn't make economic sense, when schools in the US offer a full tuition waiver and a TAship.

So it looks like I may have to reapply next year (LONG story), but I'm trying to find programs for Victorian Studies that I could feasibly get into. I'm also wondering what overseas funding is like. For instance, if I got into Oxford, should I even go, since they generally don't incorporate teaching (at least, from what I have heard, not like the US does)? Sorry to bring it back to round 2 time. Maybe things will work out and I don't have to reapply!
I am an international student, and did my MA in the UK. It's definitely pretty rare to get funding for overseas students. I got admission to a couple of great places, but no funding. Here's what one of my potential supervisors (who was also my MA supervisor) said regarding funding: Since the Government in the UK has cut back grants even more radically this year (while pretending that there are more) I think there is little hope of getting one anywhere in the UK. But some universities (though not UEA) do have private funding, so you might be lucky.
Oxford and Cambridge probably fall in to the category of universities that have private funding.
Regarding teaching experience, it's pretty rare. I have friends doing their PhDs now and if they do get experience it's mostly as Tutorial leaders or tutors, never anything more than that. You certainly can't create and teach your own course, which is something the programs I've got admission to in the US all allow you to do.

Have any of you considered CompLit programs??? I was accepted to the MA @ SUNY Binghamton (no word on funding, yet), and wondered if anyone had any info about the school or program.
Did anyone else apply to UMass??? I applied for a Phd, but still haven't heard back ..
Did you apply to UMass for a Comp Lit Phd? I did too... and haven't a heard a thing. Am considering writing to them to find out, but don't know if I should.

I’m interested in how everyone approached the idea of “fit” within their statements of purpose. How did you go about articulating why you were good fit for their program?
I tried to emphasize the professors who I wanted to work with and why I wanted to work with them. I only devoted about a paragraph to it and, while I’ve had success, I feel like I’m missing something in that area.
That's pretty much the strategy I followed too... and have had mixed results with it.

So I've applied to Comp lit PhD programs. At present I have one official offer, one unofficial offer (which has been unofficial for 3 weeks now) and 1 waitlist (where the DGS seemed pretty optimistic about my chances.
The DGS of the unofficial offer school has asked me to send him the offers I receive from other schools. Is this normal? I'm not very familiar with the system as I'm an international student. If I do send him the offer I have which has a slightly lower stipend that the stipend he mentioned in his informal offer (though it also has a lower cost of living) would this affect the stipend offer that they make negatively (i.e. would they give me less than they'd said, because the other school gave me less?)
Any advice would be appreciated.

I've got an acceptance from the Comp Lit department, and was just wondering if you could tell me a bit about the university in general, and also about Eugene?
-
You guys are absolutely wonderful. Thanks for the info! Any advice on scholarships/funding options to consider?
Just wanted to say I did my MA at UEA, not in your field, but if you have any questions regarding the uni or Norwich or anything else feel free to PM me.

so i am checking the results board and i think there is almost a silence for the last couple of days... is it the silence before the storm? I wonder...
Well... I think yesterday was a holiday in the US.

I'm sorry to cause undue stress. I hope it all works out for you. It's my 2nd round of apps too so I understand how you are feeling.
-
I'm talking about Comp Lit. I wasn't expecting it this early either. Good luck guys!
-
did you send an e-mail and ask them?or did they contact you first?
they contacted me... but I'm an international student.. (I don't know if that has an impact). I hope you get in too.
-
Agreed. I wish I had known that existed.
Me too...

Great news then i hope this doesnot mean a rejection for me
I got the sense that notifications will officially go out next week.

did you have any news from Oregon? or Northwestern?
I got an unofficial acceptance from Oregon last night/ this morning. The DGS said the actual offer letter would come sometime next week along with details of funding.
Good luck!

I agree with Iphi. Work on your application and any gaps you see.
The first time I applied I was in the final year of my undergrad and I got rejected across the board. Since then I worked for a couple of years and did an MA in the UK, and now here I am applying again, with a significantly better application (in my opinion, and I've got one acceptance so far).

The professors I interacted with/took classes with in Lit were by and large great. A couple of my friends stayed on there for MAs and now PhDs, so progression is definitely possible. Just wanted to say that funding for international students in the UK is abysmal... which is why I've applied to the US this year. If you have any other specific questions about Edinburgh or London, let me know.

So Michigan apparently wants to torture people. In the Wolverine system is a new link "View Decision" and I clicked on it. And then it only says "A decision has been made. Your department will contact you with the decision."
Seriously? Seriously?! SERIOUSLY?!
That's crazy!!!

Just got an email acceptance from Irvine... Nearly a week after the first post on the results board. So, don't lose hope!
-
looking at the results board I would say Princeton is end of this month.
-
I just got my acceptance! Would like to talk about it too.
-
Well, I've been here all alone looking for any comp lit guys to share anxiety with. Yesterday there was a Northwestern acceptance on the Results board. So, I guess this implies rejection for me since I got nothing.
In the same boat after seeing the Irvine acceptance. And it was the one where I felt I had the best 'fit' too!

The wait is making me anxious/stressed. So thought I'd bump this thread up. How is everyone else coping? Any acceptances/ rejections. I've not heard anything. Had an interview for Penn State yesterday, but don't think that went too well. I just wish I'd know already.

I studied at Edinburgh (undergraduate) .... great uni etc. Just wanted to point out that there isn't a comparative literature dept per se. So, if the people who are in your field are good then I'd go for it. I was in the English lit/ Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. Also, as a city it's pretty international but still has a small town feel (relative to London anyway).

I'm waiting to hear from them too.
