  1. Congrats to both of you that have been accepted!!!! Just wondering how many PhD students GWU usually admits? Are we talking in the 20's?
  2. Hey! I was one of those crazy Ph.D. hopeful students who decided NOT to look at the ranking list... (ok, well yes, I peeked at it) but I did not make my decisions on where to apply based on rankings. I based my decision on what my professors recommended and what programs seemed to suit me the best. So with that said I was rejected by UVA, probably rejected by UNC (since I never heard!!!-- how frustrating, just send me the darn rejection), I was accepted at UConn and was assigned the Chair of Comparative Politics and Methodology as my advisor (doubt I could have gotten that at a top 25!). I am awaiting GWU and American. The way I see it... if one funds me, I am extremely happy. I know the other forums talk about how below 25 we won't teach but that is total BS... I know MANY professors who teach at "good" universities who came from no where!!! As for me, I want to teach at a large state university... Sorry, sometime this board can get me down with all this talk about top 10/top 25 and talking as if you are throwing away your degree to be getting it at any lower university... then why would they have so many programs.. I think over 350 in the country???? Ok... rant done Accepted: UConn  Rejected: UVA, UNC (never let me know!) Waiting: WUSTL, American
  3. Quarex--- Yes they do share faculty... they also share faculty with conflict resolution. The Ph.D. program just began 2 years back... my current roommate is in her 2nd year of the Ph.D. program. I do not think many people know about it! They admit about 5 students a year (mostly international). Good luck with your application and that would be nice if you and your girlfriend could go to the same place... I know you said you lived in VA... is it northern VA? I live in Fairfax, used to live in Blacksburg, and before that Charlottesville. I think the GMU Ph.D. will join the ranking soon... they have some great (well known) professors and are very accessible. The master's program has good placement in regards to PhD acceptances and "real world" acceptances.
  4. Yes, you are right Quarex... I was just trying to be uber critical.... :?
  5. As you can see... placement certainly is not that great if you wanted to work at a Top 30 school. I see that many have started out at smaller colleges/universities and who knows what they may be doing now... can always move up. I would say that GWU is not that strong at placement however, it depends what you are looking for... do you want to work in DC at the world bank, IMF, EU, UN? Then it is pretty good and you are already in the area so that makes getting your face and research out much easier. By the way, have you already heard???? I thought they were still making decisions? (I heard 2 more weeks) If that's the case... fooy for me, another rejection... In: UConn (but awaiting funding) Out: UVA, UNC Come On: GWU, American

  7. Just wondering if anyone applied to George Mason University? It is my alma mater (master's) and has very new Ph.D. program and just wanted to fish and see if anyone did apply. It is not ranked since it just started up about 2 years ago. Congrats on all the recent acceptances!
  8. Sorry LaraAnn85! I know how that feels. Congrats on University of Houston & Purdue! Thanks for letting me know. I am awaiting American... I guess those should be out in a few weeks?? OK-- sorry to have interrupted this forum... back to undergrad stats...
  9. LaraAnn 85.... when did you get rejected from UNC? I know they already made the picks but I never heard anything... did you just assume or did you get an email/letter? Thanks
  10. Good luck Fiddler_Crab!! I found out Monday (Feb.25th) I was accepted for a PhD in Political Science. What program are you looking at? Enjoy your trip!
  11. Thanks! I guess I will shoot them an email in a few weeks. Just giving them a few weeks to decide about funding but once mid-March rolls around I need to know about those credits! Does anyone know the average number of credits taken from an MA program?
  12. Re: PoliSci 2007-2008 Cycle by lenin333 on Tue Feb 26, 2008 1:48 pm "Anybody else a Post-Communist Scholar here? I am a Russianist. It would be interested to see what everyone is interested in." Yes! I am a Post-Communist Scholar but more in respect to Western Europe-Russia Relations. Last year I presented a paper at ISA entitled "Putin-Chirac: A Relationship". What are your general interests? I found it hard to find programs in with solid Post-Communist studies. It seems the field died out but was revived again under Putin... what do you think?
  13. Anyone accepted to UConn??? Thinking of going there??? Any word on an admitted students weekend?
  14. Question, to all those that have gotten in. When do you begin to ask if the school will accept credit from the MA classes you took? I have heard that many schools will either take none or just a few? Should you ask before you find out about funding or wait? Should you wait until you accept? I think it would be important to know if I had to choose between two schools since transfer credits would make my actual time in classes less and the Ph.D. faster. What do you think? Thanks!
  15. Quarex, thanks for the rundown! Let me know if you ultimately decide to go to UConn! I am from VA and have lived my whole life here so going to UConn would be like another country Best of luck with your other applications. I definitely have always thought rankings really had little to do with real substance of a program (they all fight to get ranked and where they fall can sometimes be a little strange) and what mattered more to me was the professors, the general attitude of the program, placement, and my own personal "click" with the university.
  16. Thanks Polisciapp!... I have looked over that website...I was just hoping for a fellowship....and not just a TA-ship... but I will take whatever I get... Personal funding is really scarce in my case... Thanks
  17. Thanks silencio! I was a bit worried UConn was way way way down the list so this makes me much happier!
  18. I should say I only applied to UConn based on website information and a feel about the department. Plus it was recommend and a last minute app.... so didn't do much research... Thanks!
  19. Thanks for filling us in flyingwalrus.. Ill be waiting for my rejection letter in the mail then! Question... does anyone know how good of a program UConn is? I know its not top 40 but does anyone know its ranking or what type of schools it would stand with... was just admitted today.
  20. I got this in my letter of acceptance "Your request for financial support from the department is still under consideration. The graduate committee will be making financial decisions between now and mid-April." Does this mean they don't usually give out funding or my chances are low of getting funding??? :?
  21. Found out from Uconn at 10:30, accepted but awaiting funding....
  22. Does anyone know what's going on with UNC??.. I understand that most people who have been accepted heard back a few weeks ago and that admit. students weekend is this weekend. I tried calling UNC but all they said is that they are still making decisions. Undraftedfreeagent... have you heard?(i just saw you still have UNC in your not heard from yet list) I am guessing maybe they just send out all the rejection letters after acceptances?? Sounds strange to me.... but hey it works differently each place. Thanks! Applied: UVA, UNC, UConn, American Rejected: UVA, WUSTL Accepted: waiting...
  23. Undergrad: Virginia Tech 3.4gpa Cum Laude Major: Political Science Extra: Study Abroad Switzerland for a semester Masters: Political Science- International Relations George Mason University, 3.7gpa Extra: ISA Conference presentation and Paper, Research Assistant Internships: Homeland Security, Health and Human Services Fellowship: E.B. 24. Sorry Quarex! I hope that you will be accepted for a Ph.D. somewhere else! Who knows what to assume about UConn Ph.D. acceptances but thanks for letting us know that UConn has at least done some of their notifications. I figure maybe another week or two..... :? waiting really is tough when everyone else seems to have heard before me!!
