  1. I am 10yrs into a different career..because I didn't know there was "US" archaeology (I was Classics), so I'll stay w that and do public arch.
  2. US Government. Specifically Department of Interior.
  3. Anyone know what the sub discipline was for this: University Of Arizona Anthropology, PhD (F14) Rejected via E-mail on 21 Feb 2014 U 21 Feb 2014
  4. Good luck! If you need to re-apply next year, it might be worthwhile to apply for an archaeologist job through the USG. They offer permanent and seasonal (so could be like a paid internship).
  5. Sorry about Arizona. I am still waiting to hear from them, but they seem to be trickling out there acceptance/rejection emails.
  6. Arizona is killing me. I was all set for an email one way or the other... but radio silence for archaeology.
  7. I think my roommate did her Masters in History there and really liked it. She returns every so often to visit.
  8. Good luck! I am not sure what my chances are since i've been out of school for so long... But I figured if I was going to quit my career for SW archaeology, I better go big, or go home.
  9. Good for her! Pass on congrats from this unknown person.
  10. I am still waiting for archaeology. Is the result posting today unofficial or official? It doesn't specify.
  11. Checking in. Waiting for ASU and U of Arizona's Phd archaeology program.
  12. Checking in. I'm waiting on Arizona State and U of Arizona.
  13. I used Barron's. However, I would say focus on the synonyms with that set. They sometimes highlighted secondary definitions instead of primary ones.
  14. I recommend getting the 500 verbal flashcards and making sure you know every one of those words. I took the GRE about 10 years ago and did bad on the test even though I had always done well on papers and other standardized tests. The truth was I didn't have my vocabulary down. I knew how to use the words in a sentence but if you asked me for a synonym or definition, I would blank. This time I increased my vocab and did very well. The books, I think, teach you tricks on how to take the test, maximize time and guess well, but that will only take you so far without the vocab base.
  15. If you go to the results page for past grad applicants on this site and sort by archaeology, you will see a lot of notes in general complaining about the lack of financing.
  16. Nothing wrong with old school. I've always had an affinity for the Babylonian creation story where Tiamat's body is divided up to make heaven and earth. Very violent and gruesome but the image stays with you.
  17. Southwest Exchange Systems UofA, ASU, and UNM What about you colorless?
  18. Kris - You're lucky to have both a personal statement and SOP option! AND It sounds like your doing it right. I don't think there is any reason for an SOP to be dry. If you can come up with a stylistic ribbon (I like your term) that doesn't take up a lot of space, why not? It will make your piece seem more polished. I do think it would be helpful if the OP clarified whether s/he was writing a personal statement or SOP - I guess to determine what kind of hook and how much space to expend on it.
  19. If something led to you dropping out of college, I would name it (with as a little detail as possible) and then follow up with how you overcame that something. I can't imagine, if the "excuse" is something as horrible as rape, anyone would not understand the associated hardship. Maybe something like: "Although I was the victim of sexual assault, which resulted in the temporary cessation* of my undergaduate studies, my strength of character ultimately led to the successful attainment of my B.A./B.S. degree in ...... from ...... University." Then move on to all your successes. I think ultimately the point is to show that while something bad interupted your life, it was a very understandable, but temporary interuption. * I phrased it this way to take the blame off from you as it wasn't your failing that led to you leaving college.
