  1. It really isn't a bad idea to join honor societies in your major field... especially if that's what you're doing graduate work in. Who knows when that extra resume/CV line will come in handy. & if an acadmeic career is what you're after, it may be handy to be part of it down the line so you have an easier time publishing in major journals & can get involved in chapter activites (though the rules are different for different societies). For $30- why not?
  2. I'm currently making the choice between two schools and am looking for creative ways to systematically compare them. Does anyone have any techniques that have worked particularly well for them (ie. spreadsheet, aggregated rankings, etc)? I'm thinking of doing doing a pro-con list, but I'm sure there are better ways. Also- what categories have you used to compare schools? I'll start us off: Ranking # of Profs in research area Placement record Location Funding Retention rate Cost of living ....
  3. I can totally relate to the OP. I just declined my lower ranked option after visiting one of the higher ranked ones. The biggest reason was the placement record. I just had to ask myself, do I want to get the kind of job their grads get? (& not to mention the ones who don't find careers in academia). Its important to get a straight answer to the question of where *all* their graduates get placed (or not placed) & how many people finish the program. That's the kind of info you might not get right off the website. Pardon the hackneyed analogy but, there's nothing wrong with being a big fish in a small pond. However, after 5-7 years you'll get on the job market (the ocean if you will) and might regret forgoing the more valuable degree. That's the conclusion I reached after dealing with a very similar dilemma.

    Newark, DE

For an out of town student visiting the campus U of Delaware- what is the closest/best mode of public transport to get there (from about 8 hrs away). Air, greyhound, amtrack, or anything else? Just wondering if there's one that's particularly convienent. Any advice? Thanks
  5. 26. You check your mailbox first at the exact time they start sorting the mail, wait patiently by it for 15 minutes checking periodically, go get lunch, come back after an hour to check again... then stop by to check one last time in the evening just in case they did their sorting late that day. 27. Your facebook status may as well be renamed your grad school status 28. You spend an entire day carefully crafting an email expressing that you would indeed like to attend the visiting weekend
  6. I just wanted to say thank you to realist. The advice s/he gave is definitly going into the grad information folder on my desktop (come on... you know you have one too). I'm currenly making the agonizing decision between a couple top 20 programs that are okay research fits and a low ranked program that is a fantastic research fit. This part is particularly relevant to me because this is the one factor that's keeping me from making a decison on the the lower ranked program. Its just really difficult to pass up the opportunity of working with someone whose work inspired me to enter into my subfield. *sighs* Here's to hoping the visiting students weekends offer a little clairty. Anyways- thanks realist, and I look forward to reading your other posts on this forum!

    Buffalo, NY

I never went to college in Buffalo... but I've lived there most of my life. There's tons of theater, music, and art in the 'city'- and the previous posters are right, everything is dirt cheap. I particularly enjoy the Knox art gallery, the Buffalo Philharmonic orchestra, and Shea's theater. Also- you can get into almost every history museum for free on Fridays- which is sweet! The food in particular is *amazing* and not too hard-hitting in the pocketbook. Aside from maybe NYC, there is no decent pizza anywhere outside of Buffalo- and trust me, I've looked. Also, people get really into the Sabres (hockey team) in Buffalo- so I'd highly recommend buying a hat or something to fit in, lol. From what I hear- UB is big enough where if you never want to leave campus... you prolly wouldn't have to (unless you were taking classes at both parts of it). However- I'd recommend exploring a bit. Buffalo may be a little economically depressed on the surface, but if you look hard enough you'll be amazed at how much fun there is to be had. BTW- I'm not much of a partier, but I've been to the bars downtown & they're very lively and ummm hoppin'?
  8. Hey guys/gals- does anybody know when the University of Southern California (USC) recruiting weekend is? I need to know b4 making commitments to visit other schools. I hope to hear from them soon (with a yes of course)- but the sooner I know when their recruiting weekend is the sooner I can get back to other programs about their weekends. Thanks for *any* info at all! ps. personal message me w/ anything you wouldn't want to put in the forum.
  9. Hahaha. Mind if I lift this and send it to one of my programs? Very nice
