  1. Does anyone have any comments on this program? It is in the Edinburgh Informatics department, it has a taught 1st year then 3 years research. My interests are in machine learning. I would like to know if people have heard of it in America? Will I be hurting my career choices if I were to accept them over say University of Michigan? One fun thing is that the teaching load will be more like 6 hours a week compared with 15 or more in the US. I was quite impressed when I interviewed, but they are the only place I've gotten to see in the flesh. Other offers: OSU, CMU, Alberta, Cornell, Wisconisn-Madison all for statistics but I will be doing machine learning more than stats.
  2. I still haven't heard from them, there have been a lot of acceptances already so it doesn't look good. But I emailed them last week and they said they were still undecided. Probably undecided between rejected and waitlisted. Stranger things have happened though!
  3. Thanks for the info, it's a bit of a minefield.
  4. In the UK PhD students are not taxed on their stipends, so it is a reasonable question for international students to have
  5. If you want the F1 visa you should be fine, I wanted a J1 visa which would enable my future wife to seek employment.
  6. I know! It was/is my dream school, but what can you do? University of Michigan have said that they will do the visa I want so that's my current likely destination. They are good at machine learning, but have no topological stats . Perhaps we will meet at a conference instead!
  7. By the way if anyone is waitlisted for CMU, I will likely be declining my offer soon as they can't offer me the kind of visa I need. Sucks!
  8. If you can get funding, the Computational Neuroscience program at Edinburgh looks good.
  9. I can confirm that I as an international student, I had many sleepless nights wondering if I'd get in anywhere. So we're not all that arrogant! On another subject: what do people think of this Data Science PhD in Edinburgh? I had an interview there yesterday and their department was one of the more stunning buildings I've ever seen!
  10. I agree, I emailed them asking to be put out of my misery, then I will have heard from all American schools.
  11. I wonder if there any Chicago acceptances still to come, doesn't look promising!
  12. I agree it would be very interesting to tie the different submissions to individuals, but it would be a PITA. I think that thegradcafe could implement a submission system more orientated around collecting data, by linking to a profile, and also by standardizing things like name of school. Then they could offer useful summary statistics themselves.
  13. Investigating the difference between international and American (where I group 'U' together with 'I' for this purpose) I made the following plots: the first is broken down by year and the second looks at all applications together. Also here is a plot showing some of the difference between GPA reporters and non-reporters:
  14. That is a good point cyberwolf. What I hope is that although the numbers are biased, we might still be able to see trends such as: is it getting harder to be accepted? Once you have a specific question in mind to answer, perhaps the bias can be compensated for to some extent by using official data from some schools to inform a Bayesian prior.
  15. I cannot edit my post, but for some reason the links I posted lack the : in http://... Perhaps a moderator can correct it. Data is here and code is here. Hopefully these links will work. Just in case : data :http://sourceforge.net/projects/triangleinequal/files/Grad%20Cafe%20Data/gc_data.csv/download code:http://sourceforge.net/projects/triangleinequal/files/Grad%20Cafe%20Data/grad_cafe.py/download
  16. Hello some of you might be interested in this, I have scraped the admissions data for statistics phds/masters from the grad cafe. The csv file can be gotten here. The python code used to generate it is here. The code could be easily modified to get biostatistics, or math, or any other subject, data too. The most annoying part is that schools have many names given for them, I have collected a list of synonyms, but in the future, if you run the code again, no doubt new cases will arise, and you will have to add these to the list in the code. If you run the code, it will take about 3 minutes to finish. This is because I have added delays between sending requests to the grad cafe for pages in order not to annoy them. In the code I have added a couple of plotting functions the most basic tasks. Things that could be added I have only collected records that are accepted/rejected, could add wait listed and interview as results. Could add data about schools from the usa today rankings or NRC. Standardising gre data/ from 160 to 900 scale, also people report as percentages, esp for subject gre. I hope those of you who are data-curious will find some interesting things out and share them with us.
  17. That's exciting! Maybe we should try to predict them. That is after all meant to be our business.
  18. I was wondering where they were, thanks. Good point, I believe it was started in 2006 and finished in 2010. I might try scraping the admissions data from the gradcafe over the weekend. I admit we don't really understand the sampling process, but we ought to able to see trends like increasing numbers of applications, ratios of acceptances and so on. Perhaps if we can compare to some official figures from some of the schools, we could get an idea of how the sample differs from reality.
  19. Maybe this is of interest to some of you, I scraped the data from the NRC rankings and averaged the S, R and Research rankings both high and low. The plot is of the top 25 scoring schools. If anyone wants the data just pm me.
  20. Takes a long time to hear about the fellowships, good luck!
  21. Did you find out about funding? They offered me a TA thing and I'm still waiting to hear about a fellowship.
  22. Hey I will most likely be attending on the 7th. I'm not really considering anywhere else, although if I got into Chicago I'd have to have a think. What I'm expecting to get out of the open house is to form an impression of the department and city, and see if I can imagine myself spending 5 years there. If I have time I might try and scope out some places to live too. As for clothing I will be wearing jeans and a shirt and a big coat.
  23. That's funny I have the same task with my fiance . Perhaps I will see you at the stats open house then.
