  1. The 2010 National Research Council ratings for Communication are available at: http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124717/ From what I've heard and seen, the "S-Rank" appears to be more reliable for our field, because of the fragmented nature of the communication discipline (the R-Rankings are more oriented towards long-term institutional reputations).

DTN is heartless, it's true. But if you go that route, Berrytree is not bad. Lived there for two years without a lot of problems. Nice location for bus/bike. A bit of a walk to campus.
  3. I'm starting at Ohio State this fall, not for political comm, but in that same school of comm. The political communication emphasis is a big draw here, and the faculty in that area are prolific and increasingly well known (Eveland, Holbert, and a bunch of others). Check it out, it might be a fit for you.
  4. Definitely check out out the TISM department at Michigan State. Really strong faculty in that area, with diverse interests. http://tism.msu.edu/modules.php?name=Pages&sp_id=731&pmenu_id=85 http://tism.msu.edu/modules.php?name=Pages&sp_id=727
  5. I will be attending the School of Communication's doctoral program in the fall. Coming from the south, but originally from the Midwest, so it's a bit of a homecoming. My partner will be looking for work (administrative or HR - anything non-retail) and we'll be looking for a quiet apartment close to major bus lines (Clintonville, Grandview, etc.) I'm very excited to be joining Team Buckeye!
  6. should be thinking about apartments.

  7. Congrats to everyone with acceptances, and my thoughts are with you if you're still waiting. I decided to choose Ohio State. Had a great visit two weeks ago, and was very confident about the program, faculty, and locale.
  8. I hope it does! Maybe you're on the waitlist, somewhere in the middle? I see 6 rejections on the results page... wondering if any cafe-goers got into that program.
  9. Ah, shit! Just got my UPenn rejection email 30 minutes ago. "We received hundreds of applications to fill an incoming class of approximately 15 students."
  10. magkman... what kind of a source told you this? And how certain is it? I am right there with deanne!
  11. I thought liszt was attacking me at first (by saying "not surprising" and "not normal" were nearly perfect antonyms). But then you guys just went at it, tete-a-tete. Anyway, what I meant by "not surprising" is yes, we realize it happens. It happens everywhere. No one is naive enough to say "oh my good golly gosh! someone committed misconduct in grad school!" But what I meant by "not normal" is that most grad students and most academics don't cheat. So it's not the norm. It also shouldn't be normalized, where we give up and stop caring about dishonesty and its consequences. I think the reason everyone piled on RH7 is because that is what he/she suggested - that academic cheating is within the realm of decent behavior or simply to be expected and accepted w/o protest. I think we all (even RH7) disagree with that position, and believe that dishonesty, when exposed, needs to be punished (very) harshly. And to me that's the interesting (and disturbing) thing about this thread... the various reasons that faculty and universities won't take a stand or do turn a blind eye to cheating.
  12. time out
  13. Someone mentioned Indiana Jones... How about those godawful, campy, made-for-tv "The Librarian" movies? "Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) was a quiet bookworm whose 12 bachelor's degrees, six master's degrees, and four Ph.D.'s weren't earned by risking his life at the far corners of the globe. But now school is over, and the only way to uncover some of history's most exciting secrets is to travel into the field and set out on the adventure of a lifetime." My mother-in-law likes this show and I was subjected to it during the holiday break. It makes the nuclear refrigerator and aliens in "Kingdom Skull" seem sensible and well thought out.
  14. No, it's not surprising, but it's definitely not normal or acceptable.
  15. #2 would be a lot better if it had the three velvet arm bands/stripes most doctoral gowns sport.
