  1. Cornell might be a good bet too. I did my undergrad there. Lots of funding for SE Asia.
  2. I'm applying social-cultural/applied. Starting to get intimidated by it all!
  3. Hi All, I am narrowing down my list of schools to apply to this year (PhD), and a grad friend of my suggested I look into both NYU and UCLA. So far, I am applying to UT Austin, U of Toronto, American, and Berkeley. I have been researching thse 4 programs for a while, but do not know as much about NYU or UCLA. My interests are in activist/applied anthropology and anthro of corporations with a regional focus in South America. I am wondering if anyone can give my some advice if these programs would be a good fit. Recently, the possibility of taking at least some courses in ethnographic film-making seems appealing, so NYU could potentially be a good fit. Any info (or suggestions for other programs!) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  4. Hi all, I am buckling down and trying to narrow down my choices for applying for a PhD program for 2012. I wrote to a professor from undergrad and she advised I do some more research on Columbia before applying. Her opinion was that the faculty does interesting research, but the program is not very cohesive. Also, that PhDs may not have much future weight from there, although she wasn't sure. Any opinions from current students or anyone who's looked into the program? I'm considering the joint program with the Teacher's College since I am interested in activist/applied anthropology. Thanks in advance.
  5. Hey thank you both for the info. The activist masters looks really neat. Definitely has me thinking about some different possibilities.
  6. Hi all, I am currently finishing up my undergrad and looking at grad programs for 2012. I know it's a few years away, but while I am still in an academic mindset, I need to think about it. I have found, even as an undergrad, that it's difficult to balance activism and academics at times. I am often frustrated that these two things are treated as mutually exclusive. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a programs and departments that encourage activism in their Phd programs. Thanks a bunch!
  7. Hi all, I am entering my senior year in an interdisciplinary program, but I am thinking about doing poli sci for grad school. I have not taken any stats courses since high school and am wondering how important in might be for grad school. I tried taking a basic stats course last year, but after looking at the sylabus, I realized I had learned it all in my IB stats course in high school (the professor also told me not to bother taking his course). I can take a special stats course for social science, which would be useful, but since I am thinking of taking time off between now and grad school, I would rather just take stats in grad school if need be. What would your advice be on this? Thanks!
