  1. Rumor has it 28 were accepted (soc/cult being the largest subfield), and the expecting about 60% acceptance from there. All emails and official documents should be coming to you this week! Good luck!!!
  2. From what I've heard from actually reputable sources (I'm super skeptical of gossip like this typically), Columbia tends to promote their own MA program over others so MAPSS students are unlikely to be accepted. I hope I'm wrong, but from what I've heard and from what I've learned from my cohorts experiences... it's pretty accurate. Bummer though. It has nothing to do with the quality of work, whether it's completed on time, etc. It's all about money.
  3. As a former MAPSS alum this is sort of a sore spot. There are definitely pro's and con's: Negatives: It's really challenging, you'll receive less academic support than you're promised (cross your fingers for a preceptor who is awesome), and getting a job with a MA in social science is... difficult to say the least. There is truth to the school motto "where fun comes to die." I was fairly warned the first day - I was told they would "break me down to build me back up in their image" but at times it was really trying haha. Also, the debt is no joke. The job market for people with MA's is pretty scarce so unless you have other practical skills, parents to live with after, or some sort of backup plan until you're back in school, I'm not sure I'd consider it. Positives: Honestly, I've never learned so much in my life. I came from a top tier school too! It really prepared me for further graduate work, made me focus, and gave me the tools I needed to guide myself through a huge research project. Also, the program is good at what it does - gets you to the next step. For me, honestly, it was worth it. I now have a fully funded offer to my top school, working with dream faculty advisors. Almost everyone in my program who I was close to has moved onto other fully funded offers. It just depends on what you're looking for. (Heads up, Columbia doesn't accept MAPSS grads to try to promote their own MA program so if you wanted to go there... well...) If you want to know more about it feel free to PM me.
  4. Just got my rejection from Princeton!! Also, to those of you who applied to University of Washington - say what? I saw on their actual department site, and talked to department members (faculty and students) who all told me they aren't even accepting applications this year. They're not opening their apps till this upcoming fall cause of funding. Did you hear differently? That's super weird.
  5. from what i heard, everything is being sent out next week/next couple of days (including snail mail stuff) so i think patience is key.
  6. I finally heard from UCLA! Got a call last night, sending out packets next week. Full finding and all that stuff. POI said it was a small pool from almost 200 students. When I did the math it was about 5%. Scary!! Still think I'm dreaming hahha Good luck everyone!
  7. Is there anyone else on this lurking who hasn't heard from a single school yet? I'm started to panic haha. I haven't heard anyone mention final decisions from ucla, ucsd, Austin, uconn and Harvard so if you have any news I'd love a heads up! Thanks guys!!
  8. Hey Nic42, you definitely don't have to do that, but thanks for the info. Congrats on your other acceptances!! That's great news.
  9. hey decaf! i'm sorry to hear you didn't get in! that's insanely competitive. i kind of can't believe those numbers. i was just wondering if this means that they already sent out all their acceptances, or if they just made their decisions already. I haven't heard a word back yet.
  10. I was just wondering what the general rule is for contacting professors. Is it too late to contact them after you've submitted your application? What do you even say when you contact them??? I feel like I'm walkin in the dark here...
  11. hahahhahh oh have i been there. when i applied for my MA, i called some of the depts admissions people and they just kind of giggled and we're like, "we know, that's why we don't really read them until after winter break." depts know that professors are totally like that, so don't worry! as for the rest... AHHH!!!!! i've submitted 3/14 applications so far for PhD programs. i feel almost more nervous now that i've submitted than before. is it april yet?
  12. Anyone going to the AAA's this fall or have any tips on how to approach faculty members who you are considering working with/you want them to consider working with you? ha. Thanks in advance!
  13. are you even joking? that's the worst. i was for sure applying there as one of my top choices this year. boooooo.
