    Classics 2010

I really don't know. UNC had the earliest deadline but I'm sure they get a lot of applications.

    Classics 2010

PHEW I've finally finished all my apps. Huzzah! Now all I can do is wait. This will be fun.
  3. Eh, don't wanna expend the time, money or effort. And my recommenders have been a pain in the ass so I just want to get this process over with and see how it goes.
  4. Damn, Iowa sounds like a pretty good place. Maybe I should've applied there

    Classics 2010

I think I'm going to go to law school eventually (3-5 years) and do business law and make a ton of money xD In the meantime, gosh, I don't know. Oy.

    Classics 2010

I still have a few things to do, but I'm mostly done! And then its the waiting game for a month and a half
  7. JPR, your stats kick ass. You're going to be very competitive anywhere, so don't sweat it. Just wait for the acceptance letters to roll in
  8. Nice Spozik! Ugh. Makes me realize how lazy I've been since I've been outta school. Ah well, there's plenty of time to make up for lost time
  9. hahaha it's a good one. Cracks me up.
  10. Lemme think... Greek: New Testament - parts from John and Mark, Romans, part of Hebrews Plato - Phaedrus (about half) Herodotus - selections from first 3 books Homer - Odyssey 5, 19, and something else ;p Xenophon - Memorabilia (can't remember how much) some random lyric poetry Latin: Cicero - some letters, parts of De Rerum Natura Virgil - Aeneid 1, 3, Eclogues 1,4 Catullus - a lot xD Propertius - a number of poems from every book Juvenal - Satires 1, 4 Horace - some of the Odes
  11. Interesting. Maybe this will help my chances of getting into UT!!! Probably not, I'm not that lucky
  12. That's a good point (3). I want to do classics. But I am trying to be realistic about my chances. Considering that I didn't really apply to any "safe" schools (my logic is that, given the crappy prospects of PhDs in humanities, why do I want to pursue a PhD at a place where I won't even be able to get a job once I get out of school?) there is a very good possibility I won't get in anywhere. I'm ok with that though.
  13. Of course I recognize that admissions will be tighter now because of the recession. But I'm not worrying about it or fretting. It's just a fact I can't change. If I get into a good school, huzzah for me. If I don't, then I guess I need to get a real job.
  14. I would like to study ancient Greek and Roman religions, but the places that I've found that offer a degree that I could do that, I doubt I could get in since I don't have much training in religions. So classics it is

    What Now?

Agreed with everyone here. Do a post-bac, and then apply to a combination of MA and MA/PhD programs. It's a long road (same road as me, actually), but I think once you finish the post-bac you'll have a really good shot.
  16. I see. That's less than a glowing endorsement I don't think I'd be a good fit there anyways. Wish Detienne was still there. And I know I've come across the name Georg Luck somewhere. Ah yes, The Latin Love Elegy. Thank you Google Scholar. Book I should read.
  17. Does anyone have any thoughts on the department at Johns Hopkins University? Considering applying there.
  18. This forum is kinda dead, no one answered my question about Minnesota or Colorado :/ And I'm not sure that Iowa has much of a reputation as a premier classics department. But as long as you find professors there that share some of your interests, it's always a good idea to apply there.
  19. I got a 670V and 670Q on my GRE and am still awaiting my analytical score (guessing somewhere between 5-6). What do ya'll think of this score? Should I retake it and try and get closer to a 700 or above on the verbal part? I mean, I'm not going to be applying to an Ivy League school (I'm pretty sure they would laugh at my app :/ ) but I know how competitive classics can be. Or should I not worry too much?
  20. No, I'm more interested in poetry and Greek and Roman (and perhaps even more generally, ancient Mediterranean) religion. I just also happen to enjoy political science. Anyways, thanks for the well-wishes.
  21. I can't decide whether to apply in classics in political science. If it's in classics, I'm looking at applying to FSU, Indiana, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, and Colorado definitely, perhaps also to NYU and Minnesota.
  22. I plan on applying to quite a few places, but I would like to know more about these two in particular. Does anyone here have opinions about the quality of these two programs? Just for reference, I am interested in Greek and Roman religion, and also tragic and epic poetry, if that helps.
  23. I hear WashU and Vanderbilt have solid MA programs, and are really good with funding. You sound like you would be a very good candidate for the PhD once you get enough Greek. Good luck.
  24. I enjoy political science for its own sake. What I really would like to know is if you think I could be competitive for a decent PhD program, or if I should get my masters and prove that I can do advanced work in political science. And if a master's is the best option, what programs I should look into.
